Jodie Williams claims 200m silver, with Bianca Williams winning bronze as Nigerian Blessing Okagbare completes sprint double

Jodie Williams claims 200m silver, with Bianca Williams winning bronze as Nigerian Blessing Okagbare completes sprint double

  • Jodie WIlliams landed her maiden senior major championship medal
  • The sprinter was part of a successful day for England at Commonwealths
  • She clocked a pacey 22.50 secs and go second on all-time British list
  • Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare completed double by winning 100m and 200m
  • Bianca Williams claimed a bronze medal and Anyika Onuora finished fourth
  • Jazmin Sawyers leapt a personal best 6.54m to claim silver in long jump
Jodie Williams claimed a brilliant silver in the 200m as her England team-mate and name-sake Bianca Williams came home in third to win bronze.
Williams, a prodigious junior, landed her maiden senior major championship medal, finishing very strongly down the home straight to clock 22.50s and go second on the British all-time list.
Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare, the 100m champion, completed the double by winning in 22.25, but she was followed home by three Englishwomen.

Which, even in the absence of the top Jamaicans, could mark a watershed moment for women's sprinting in this country.
Williams, 20, who enjoyed a 151-race unbeaten streak over five years from 2005 but was cruelly ruled out of London 2012 with a hamstring injury, held off her namesake Bianca, who took the bronze in 22.58, also a personal best.
Anyika Onuora was fourth in 22.64, another PB.

Jennifer Lawrence shows off her enviably toned legs in bikini bottoms before dazzling in evening gown during photo shoot

She has spoken out against the pressures to be thin in Hollywood, and famously declared that she would rather look 'chubby' on-screen than diet.
But Jennifer Lawrence looked as svelte and toned as any young starlet during a recent photoshoot.
The 23-year-old showed off her enviably toned legs in bikini bottoms before dazzling in an evening gown in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Perhaps Jennifer was taking her mind off her alleged personal troubles after her on-again, off-again boyfriend Nicholas Hoult reportedly cosied up to actress Riley Keough last week.
Nicholas was rumoured to be romancing Lisa Marie Presley’s daughter during a brief split with Jennifer in 2013.
The 24-year-old British actor was seen with the 25-year-old actress again at No.8's Philo Prom party in New York City on Wednesday, according to Page Six.
The sighting is sparking speculation of another split between the two X-Men stars.
‘They were sitting arm-in-arm in a booth with Adam Lambert and Charl Brown,’ a witness told the site.

Another source observed that the duo ‘looked cozy,’ though Nicholas was also chatting with ‘a bunch of other girls.’
Page Six reports that he and Jennifer have recently been rumoured to be having problems.
The duo, who met while filming X-Men: First Class in 2011, broke up in January of 2013 after two years of dating, and then reunited in July 2013 while filming X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

In May 2013, the Hunger Games actress and the Warm Bodies actor walked the red carpet separately at the Met Gala.
Nicholas was subsequently pictured partying into the wee hours with his Mad Max: Fury Road co-star Riley at a Met Gala after party.
The following day, they were seen moseying around Soho in New York City.
In May, Jennifer shed some light on how she maintains her relationship with Nicholas.

‘When we’re busy, we agree to mutually ignore each other. Not completely, but neither of us gets mad when the other doesn’t text back or call. Life’s super-busy,’ she told Marie Claire.
‘Obviously you know what they’re doing, and you trust them. We’re so young that it would almost be like if we lived in the same city, what would happen? We’d be living together.
‘At least this way he’s in the same boat as I am: We can go out and have our own lives and know that we have each other.’

England's Sarah Barrow and Tonia Couch win synchronised diving silver

England's Sarah Barrow and Tonia Couch win synchronised diving silver after just missing out on top spot on the final dive

  • 10-metre platform pair were leading for four of five dives
  • Only China were missing from the field that entered the Worlds
  • Canada ended up coming out on top, less than four points ahead
  • They thought they would finish fifth so were happy with second spot
  • The English duo cooled off in the showers while waiting for their points after the electronic scoring system broke down
England's Sarah Barrow and Tonia Couch were satisfied with Commonwealth Games silver despite having led the women's synchronised 10-metre platform heading into the last round.
The Plymouth pair were in front after four of their five dives on day one of the diving competition at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh.
But, in a competitive field missing only China from the 2013 World Championships podium in the event, were overtaken on the final dive as Canada's Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion won gold with a score of 310.65.

Barrow and Couch finished with a score of 306.96 and Malaysia's Pamg Pandelela Rinong and Sabri Nur Dhabitah, with 300.12, claimed bronze.
Couch said: 'We were competing against silver and bronze medallists from the Worlds (in 2013 in Barcelona). We're really pleased to come second.
'We thought we might come fifth. We're really pleased with silver.
'We haven't been training the best this week. We went into competition and pulled it out the bag.'
There was a delayed start to the second event of the day due to a technical issue related to the judges' electronic scoring systems.
It meant the divers could not follow their progress on the scoreboard.

Barrow and Couch brushed aside the delay, but felt their final dive, a back two-and-a-half somersault with one-and-a-half twists, was scored low at 69.12 by the judges as the Canadian pair took gold.
'We had an inkling that we were leading,' Barrow said. 'Normally we do our last dive pretty well, so a little bit disappointed with that.
'They (the judges) didn't seem to be on our side. We're pretty happy with silver.
'Our training wasn't brilliant, so we're pretty pleased with a medal.'
Couch added: 'The judges were a little bit low on our last dive.'

Twelve out of 14 divers progressed from the men's 1m springboard preliminaries, the final of which takes place on Wednesday evening.
Three Englishmen advanced, with Jack Laugher, a former world junior champion, going through in first place with 435.30.
Chris Meares, who recovered from life-saving surgery to remove a ruptured spleen suffered while diving in 2009, finished with 383.40 in third place to advance, with Australia's Matthew Mitcham, scoring 383.65, second.

Freddie Woodward saved his best dive till last to total 365.45 in fourth place, while Yona Knight-Wisdom, who is representing Jamaica but was born in Leeds, scored 333.10 to progress in eighth.
James Heatly, grandson of five-time Games diving medallist Sir Peter Heatly, was 10th entering the final round, but left his most difficult dive until last, an inward two-and-a-half somersault.
The 17-year-old from Edinburgh scored 54.25 to total 317.65 and advance in 10th place.

Karen Gillan takes on Zoe Saldana in extended Guardians of the Galaxy trailer

Karen Gillan takes on Zoe Saldana in extended Guardians of the Galaxy trailer

Written By
Susanna Lazarus
"I look around and you know what I see? Losers," says Chris Pratt during the opening sequence of the latest Guardians of the Galaxy trailer. The "losers" in question are a selection of intergalactic misfits - Chris Pratt's Star-Lord, Vin Diesel's tree-like Groot and Bradley Cooper's chatterbox Rocket Raccoon who team up to save the earth as the aforementioned Guardians.
With plenty of early hype, a killer soundtrack and primed for a summer blockbuster release date, Guardians is generating plenty of excitement among fans, not least for the epic fight sequence between Karen Gillan's villainous Nebula and Zoe Saldana's green Gamora - a showdown we're given a good ol' glimpse of in the trailer below. Take a look...

Karen Gillan and Zoe Saldana square off in Guardians of the Galaxy featurette

The former Doctor Who companion talks about the joys of "staying on the dark side"
As the excitement continues to mount for the theatrical release of Guardians of the Galaxy next week, the makers have treated us to another sneaky featurette from the film, this time focusing on the sibling rivalry between Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), the two sisters on opposing sides of the fight to save the galaxy.
The featurette (below) gives a taste of what to expect from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, which follows five misfits thrown together to stop gold-like forces, including a few nifty fight scenes and interviews with the cast and director James Gunn.

Speaking of Saldana's Gamora, Gunn says: "She's about as bad as bad can get. She's an assassin and compassion is not something she's learnt.” However, as Saldana herself is quick to add, it's not easy being green: “She grows up to be this stealth assassin, she's lethal, but she's trying to be the good person.”
As for former Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan's blue, and very bad Nebula, it's a different story.
“Nebula is also a deadly assassin, which is just the coolest,” Gillan enthuses. “Gamora goes over to the good side, but Nebula definitely stays on the dark side.”

So, will the sisters resolve their differences? Saldana leads us to think possibly not. “If she shows an ounce of fear, her own siblings will turn on her. Very tense household, actually.”
Guardians of the Galaxy is released in the UK on 31st July

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Exciting New Cast Member and Even Bigger Season 2 Plans

AGENTS OF SHIELD SEASON 2 PREVIEW

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Exciting New Cast Member and Even Bigger Season 2 Plans

Season one of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. left the characters (and viewers) in dire straits. S.H.I.E.L.D. had been infiltrated by one of its own and all but destroyed. In season two, Director Phil Coulson will be at the helm rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D. from the ground up. During its Comic-Con panel, it was revealed Lucy Lawless will be play a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent this Fall, to the crowd's whooping approval.
While the first season was about laying the groundwork for who all these characters are and how they fit into the Marvel universe, season two, the panel revealed, gets to create its own stories and build on the characters fans love. You bet they'll be looking into Skye's parentage, with executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen insisting we'll discover the identity of the man with the bloody hand, while Chloe Bennett (Skye) says she wonders "Could I be Jessica Drew?" akaSpider-Woman.
And then there's the task of getting S.H.I.E.L.D. functioning again despite the villains of Hydra lurking around the corner. Brett Dalton, who plays double crossing Hydra agent Ward, teased in our interview that there could be "someone even higher up" than Garrett, his deceased Hydra compatriot. Not to fear! Clark Gregg said Coulson "and his team are pretty ingenious about coming up with what they need. It's going to go lo-fi, old school . . . back alleys, building it one step at a time, back to something that can really protect people and be trustworthy." Hail S.H.I.E.L.D.
Keep reading for more of what the show's cast and creators revealed of season two, including that whole SkyeWard romance and how Clark Gregg might be Phil Coulson.
