But then Rihanna, 27, has always been one to challenge protocol - as the red-haired singer stepped out in a bubblegum pink dress on Monday in New York City.
However, regardless of colour, the off-shoulder lacy eighties style - which wouldn't have looked out of place at a prom from the decade - was pretty hard to carry off, even for one of the most beautiful women on the planet.

The enormous puff-ball sleeves rather overwhelmed the singer's petite frame, but she did distract attention by flashing a lot of toned leg.
She carried a silver box handbag on a chain and matched her towering Christian Louboutins to her thigh-skimming gown.
The star was perfectly made-up with a bronze eye-colour that highlighted her pretty peepers and crushed raspberry lip-stain.

She piled her voluminous flame locks on top on her head, which cascaded around her face.
The star wasn't shy of accessorising, adding a bountiful collection of necklaces and heart-drop earrings.
On Friday the star attending the wedding of her stylist and friend Sonya Benson in NYC - so perhaps she's on honeymoon and unable to consult the star to her usual high levels of fashion-forward.

Last week it emerged that the Umbrella hitmaker is 'desperate' to be involved in her former flame and former attacker Chris Brown's new album.
According to Hollywoodlife.com, Rihanna was bewitched by the fact Brown was naming the upcoming work after his newly discovered daughter Royalty.
'Chris gets nothing but cool points from Ri for naming his new album Royalty,' a source revealed.

'That's so sweet and a testament of how much he loves and honors his little girl. Rihanna wants to be featured on the album and do a collaboration with him. She'd be hurt if she wasn't.'
Rihanna – who collaborated with Chris on a 2011 remix of her track 'Birthday Cake' – has reportedly already started writing a track they could work on together.
'She feels in her heart that Chris is going to pump his soul into the album so it can live up to his daughter's name and she wants to be part of that,' the insider said.
'She's even taken time to write a few lines for a possible song on the album. She thinks the album is going to be epic by all proportions.'
