And the Oscar Nominations for 2013 are ....

Daniel Day Lewis up for Lincoln as movie leads Oscar 2013 nominations with 12 nods

  • Les Miserables led the way for Britain with eight nominations
  • But Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln was top with twelve nominations
  • Naomi Watts was the only British-born actress in the best actress category
  • Skyfall nominated for five awards but misses out on Best Picture again
  • Quvenzhane Wallis, aged 9 is the youngest actress in history to be nominated for Best Actress, and Emmanuelle Riva, 85 the oldest

Daniel Day-Lewis looks set for Oscar success after being nominated for an Academy Award for his role in Lincoln.
A win would make it a hat-trick of best actor Oscar wins for the British-born star, who has already taken home Oscars for My Left Foot in 1989 and There Will Be Blood in 2007.
But the actor will face strong competition from Denzel Washington for Flight, Hugh Jackman for Les Miserables, Bradley Cooper for Silver Linings Playbook and Joaquin Phoenix for The Master.

On the female front, Naomi Watts is up for The Impossible - the only British-born actress in this category -  Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty, Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook, Emmanuelle Riva for Amour and Quvenzhané Wallis for Beasts of the Southern Wild.
British actors didn’t get a look in in either of the supporting acting categories - while Judi Dench had been tipped for a nomination for Skyfall and Maggie Smith for Quartet, neither appeared as the nominations were announced.
Instead, Sally Field has been nominated for her role in Lincoln, but is up against Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables, Jacki Weaver for Silver Linings Playbook, Helen Hunt for The Sessions and Amy Adams for The Master.

It was as if Oscar voters only had eyes for mostly American, and a few Aussie, performers.
For supporting actor, Django Unchained's Christoph Waltz will be competing against Philip Seymour Hoffamn for The Master, Robert De Niro for Silver Linings Playbook, Alan Arkin for Argo and Tommy Lee Jones for Lincoln for Best Supporting Actor.
James Bond movie Skyfall took five nominations including Adele for best song but it failed to make the Best Picture cut.
It was hoped that Skyfall, which has taken over $1billion globally, would be the 007 picture to break the curse and be among the best film nominees.

But it wasn’t to be. Instead Skyfall took technical citations including cinematography, editing, mixing and best score.
All nine movies up for Best Film have what’s known as Oscar 'pedigree' and perhaps Bond would have looked too out of place. And what a shame.
Even The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was given short shrift and was handed just three nominations for below the line fare such as make-up and hair, production design and visual effects.
But we should rejoice at the success of Les Miserables. Eric Fellner, one of the film’s London–based producers at Working Title, noted that the film has taken over $200million globally and has yet to open in many countries.

It garnered eight satisfying nominations although director Tom Hooper was snubbed.
Ahead of Les Mis was Lincoln with 12, Ang Lee’s Life of Pi with 11, then Les Miserables and Silver lings both with eight.
Ben Affleck’s film Argo took seven nominations. French film Armour held five along with Django Unchained, Zero Dark Thirty and our old friend 007.

British film Anna Karenina was named in four categories – cinematography, costume design, original score and production design but all of the actors including Keira Knightley and Jude Law were denied nominations.
This year's nominations come earlier than usual in Hollywood's long awards season, leaving the awards picture a bit murkier.
By the time Oscar nominations come out most years, the Golden Globes already have given their trophies, helping to sort out prospective front-runners for show business' biggest night.
The nominations this time precede the Golden Globes ceremony, which follows on Sunday.
The Globes and other honors presented in late January and February by directors, actors, writers and producers guilds will clear up the best-picture race for the Oscars.
The winners of the Oscars will be announced on February 24th, with the ceremony aired live on ABC from Hollywood's Dolby Theatre.
Family Guy creator and Ted star Seth MacFarlane is the Oscar host.
MacFarlane also announced the nominees alongside The Amazing Spider-Man star Emma Stone - the first time that an Oscar show host has joined in the preliminary announcement since 1972, when Charlton Heston participated on nominations day.
