Benedict Cumberbatch taunts Kirk in new Star Trek Into Darkness trailer

'No ship should go down without her captain': Benedict Cumberbatch taunts Kirk in new Star Trek Into Darkness trailer

His motives still remain shrouded in mystery.
But it seems Captain Kirk may have met his match in Benedict Cumberbatch's character John Harrison if the latest Star Trek Into Darkness trailer is anything to go by.
Following the dastardly character's terrorist attack on Earth, it seems the maverick commanding officer decides to disobey orders and catch the villain single handed.

But it seems to backfire spectacularly, with the Enterprise itself seemingly destroyed due to Jim's foolhardiness.
Taunting him, Harrison says: 'No ship should go down without her captain.'
It is the climax of a thrilling trailer that expands further on the plot hints given in previous trailers.
The teaser begins with Kirk's mentor Admiral Pike explaining how serious his role as a starship captain is.
He says: 'You think you cant make mistakes.

'But the choices you make could get yourself, and everyone under your command, killed.'
However, he also tells him he is confident in his ability to make good decisions, adding: 'but I believe in you Jim.'
When Earth is the victim of a warns 'darkness is coming,' it appears his Kirk cannot control himself.
He is refused permission to go after him, but gathers his cohorts together, despite the protests of Spock and Bones.

And it turns out he should have listened to the former's Vulcan logic, as he leads them straight into a trap.
The Enterprise coming up against a much larger ship controlled by his enemy, with fans divided on whether it is an Excelsior or Sovereign class vessel.
Kirk's foolhardiness seems to have been expected by Harrison all along, as 36-year-old Hawking favourite Cumberbatch tells him: 'You were a pawn Kirk. You cant even guarantee the safety of your own crew. Now shall we begin.'
It is unclear whether Jim goes for his well worn trick of putting the ship in self destruct mode, or whether it sustains critical damage against Harrison's vessel, but his ship is subsequently badly damaged and plummeting into a planet below.

It seems all is not lost however, as he then tells Scotty the Enterprise is not finished yet, despite his engineer telling him, 'the ships dead sir, she's gone.'
It is then seen seemingly powering up, though it is unclear just how much juice it has left.
Cumerbatch's co-star Karl Urban inadvertently blabbed in December that he would be playing Gary Mitchell a an old academy friend of Kirk who ends up transformed into a wrathful God-like antagonist after encountering the galactic barrier.
And while the comic book delivering the background story to the forthcoming film showed this character 'dying' and being given a space burial after being hit by phaser fire, this does not preclude Cumberbatch playing Mitchell's angry and vengeful alter-ego.
However, many Trekkies are still convinced the rumour he is to play franchise favourite Khan Noonien Singh the main villain from the second film in the series.
