Cate Blanchett is named Best Actress while Lupita Nyong'o gets standing ovation as she wins Best Supporting Actress at Critics' Choice Awards


The Critics’ Choice Awards kicked off on Thursday night which saw, as host Aisha Tyler described it, ‘A group of people who hate movies deciding which movies they hate the least.’
The toast of Tinseltown joined forces at the Santa Monica Barker Hangar to see who would be taking home the prestigious gongs.
Best Actress was awarded to Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, who was no doubt still reeling from her Golden Globe win and Oscar nomination for the role.

'This is so great. What a great day. I just want to thank first and foremost Woody Allen. I am just the lucky girl that he happened to call for this,' she said.
Cate pointed out her nine-year-old son Roman, who was doing magic tricks for the audience, and said: 'You need to be grateful that it is I, and not Jasmine French, who is your mother.'
Lupita Nyong'o was astounded to win Best Supporting Actress over so many stars, and received a standing ovation.

'Thank you. I'm a little terrified,' she admitted. 'I'm so honoured to be here and I just want to thank the BFCA for this incredible honour.'
Lupita said she was thrilled to even be in a category with such big names and added to Julia Roberts: 'Thank you so much for making my brother the coolest guy in school for taking a picture with him.'
She added: 'I'd like to dedicate this to my uncle who came to see me in every play and said, "You're good. But let's see what Hollywood thinks of you." He didn't live to see this day but I'm sure he's proud of me.'

Her film 12 Years A Slave won the most prestigious honour of the night in the form of the Best Picture Award, and also took home the gong for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The Best Actor award went to Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club, who said: 'Yeah! Alright, alright, alright! Thank you, this is fun.'
After thanking various industry folk, he played tribute to his character with the words: 'Thank you Ron Woodroof, for living a life that was damn well worth putting on the big screen.'

There was a sense of deja vu as the star also won the title at the Golden Globes last week, and has been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, and it was much the same for his co-star Jared Leto who took home the award for Best Supporting Actor.
'I'd like to dedicate this incredible honour to all the people around the world who are living with HIV, all the people that have lost their lives to this horrific disease,' Jared said. 'To them I thank you, it's incredible to receive this honour.'
He went on: 'Matthew most of all, I've got to do it baby. Alright, alright, alright, alright! I love you, thank you for bringing me out of retirement and giving me a chance.'

Best Actress in a Comedy went to Amy Adams for American Hustle, who was just as delighted about her former Enchanted co-star presenting her with the award as she was about actually winning it.
‘Any chance to kiss James Marsden, I’m excited,’ Amy said. She added to her fiancé: ‘Sorry Darren, you know it’s true.’
She then thanked her co-stars with the words: ‘Bradley, you are so positive, Christian, thanks for helping me find my way when I was lost. Jennifer, thanks for being such the real deal and such a great girl.'

Mark Wahlberg was named Best Actor in an Action Movie for Lone Survivor, which also saw him take home the Best Action Movie because he was an executive producer on the film.
Sandra wasn't the only one to win for Gravity as Alfonso Cuarón was awarded the Best Director gong, presented by Meryl Streep.
Cuarón joked that he wouldn't be able to remember names as well as David O. Russell, but unlike the American Hustle director, who he beat, he only had to work with two actors.

Gravity won a total of seven awards, also taking home Best Score, Best Sci Fi/Horror movie, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Editing.
Forest Whitaker was presented with the special Joel Siegel award for his humanitarian work, and his The Butler co-star Oprah Winfrey was the one who presented it to him.
'He is indeed a great actor but what I know for sure is that he is an even greater man,' Oprah said of her 'dear friend'.

The 20-year-old French star joked, 'I can't even drink,' when she took to the stage, as 21 is the legal drinking age in the US.
Meanwhile Frozen took home the Best Animated Film title, and also won Best Song for Let It Go.
