Idris Elba dismisses rumours that he will play the next 007

'I've always detested the phrase Black Bond': Idris Elba dismisses rumours that he will play the next 007

Idris Elba has dismissed rumours that he will play the first black James Bond.
The actor appeared on ITV’s Lorraine, where he chatted about the Bond role, making a Luther film and the most challenging scene he’s played in his life.
The 41-year-old actor told Kate Garraway that he doesn’t understand the emphasis on Bond’s race, while he played down speculation that he will step into the shoes of Daniel Craig.

He said:  ‘I’ve always detested the phrase ‘Black Bond’, I just don’t understand it.’
‘We don’t say “White Bond”, we just say “Bond” so it suddenly becomes a black man and he’s a “Black Bond” so I hate that phrase and it’s a rumour that’s gotten out of control basically but that’s all it is. There’s no truth in it whatsoever.’
He also spoke about making a film of the hit series Luther, confirming that we can expect to see DCI John Luther on the big screen.

He said: ‘That is definitely on the cards, we’ve been really lucky that Luther is [so popular]… it’s a small show, we did four episodes and we got such a massive following worldwide so Neil Cross [creator of Luther] and I are aiming to do the film.
‘I’m speaking to him as we speak… and we’re trying to pull it together. It’s an ambitious project because it’s a television show but we suspect that it’s going to be as successful on TV and on film as well.’
He also revealed the hardest role he has ever had to play, which was the title role in the film Mandela.

He said that the moment on the film where Nelson Mandela loses his son while he is in prison reminded him of his own emotions as a father to his eleven-year-old daughter Isan.
He said: ‘That was one of the toughest scenes I’ve ever had to play... I was in South Africa millions of miles away from my own daughter and it just brought tears to my eyes knowing that if anything happened to my kid I wasn’t allowed to run back to my kid as soon as possible, that would be heartbreaking.’
Meanwhile, Bond actress Naomie Harris has revealed that she was the one who started the rumours that Idris Elba might be taking over from Daniel Craig as the next James Bond.

She told Esquire magazine: 'A journalist once asked me, ‘Who do you think is going to be the next Bond?’ I said, ‘I’ve just finished working with Idris so, if I had the chance, I would vote for him’.
'The next thing there were headlines going: “Naomie Harris says Idris Elba to be the next Bond”. And Idris has had to live with that ever since. Now, nearly every time he does an interview, he gets asked about it.'
Daniel Craig is set to return as the British spy in the next Bond film, which will be directed by Sam Mendes.
Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris will reprise their roles and Ralph Fiennes will take over from Judi Dench as M.
