In their five years together - the pair met on the set of the Disney movie in 2005 - the star said she found herself frustrated and lashing out.
However, it was not Zac that was the issue but rather the attention he got from his legion of female fans.
The Spring Breakers star said: 'I went through a phase when I was really mean because I was so fed up.

'Girls were running after him, and I was giving them death stares. Then I realised that's not what that's about. ''Spread the love, be a good person, they support you, be nice.'''
While she may have learnt to deal with the girls, their relationship did not last the distance.
The actress - who is currently starring in stage musical Gigi - has of course since moved on with live-in boyfriend and fellow actor Austin Butler.
She is seen in a snap from her Instagram baring her toned stomach in a black crop top on Monday.
She captioned it: 'Baby dolls it's cloudy in NY, but I'm ready for the spring sun to kick in!
Vanessa told the Times that not only has she found happiness with Austin, she has also found a renewed passion for Christianity.
Raised Catholic, the star said she 'never felt very connected to it' but has been able to find a closer connection through Australian mega church Hillsong, which her boyfriend is a member of.
She said of the Pentecostal services: 'It feels like Arcade Fire - it's epic like that.
'They really focus on you having your own personal relationship with Jesus, which is wonderful.'
Vanessa also says at heart she is a bit of a hippie when it comes to spirituality and life as a whole.
'I'm a definite hippie. I'm literally my happiest self when I'm dancing half naked on a grass field listening to Led Zeppelin.'
New role: Vanessa is currently starring as the title role of musical Gigi, which is now on Broadway

In her new musical role based on Colette's 1944 novel, Vanessa gets to push the boundaries as a precocious and free-spirited courtesan-in-training who strikes up a friendship with a wealthy playboy
According to the star, it is a celebration of strong women: 'It literally felt like it was a massive group of feminists, you could just feel the serious girl power in the room.'
Vanessa said she has in the past struggled to define herself as a feminist - but that has now changed.

'I used to be on the fence about it just because I feel like it gets to a certain place where it almost has the reverse effect, where it's so overpowering and so aggressive that it's like rather than just standing up for female pride and female rights, it becomes, like, ''I am the man.''
'But now I feel like there's this new wave of feminists coming up that are truly about equal rights for women. I mean, Beyoncé is, like, killing the game, and I love her.'
Wild Saturday night: The singer had a blast with pals after the opening night of her show and wrote alongside this snap 'BEST. NIGHT. EVER. Gigi blessings, NY nights with my girl Steffanie, and danced my face off with Alan Cumming. Saturday night was one for the books.'
