But two soapstars made a case for both sides last night as Emmerdale's Roxanne Pallett stepped out in a daring lace crop top, while soap rival Hollyoaks' Jorgie Porter kept it conservative in a trend-setting two piece.
Both actresses made monochrome look seriously fierce as they turned out for the launch of Birmingham's new Pentahotel on Thursday night.

The design-led hotel chain's new building played host to an evening with reality TV and music personalities including Amanda Harrington, Shelby Billingham and Simon Webbe to celebrate its arrival in Birmingham city centre.
Thirty-one-year-old stunner Roxanne Palett, who plays Jo Sugden in Emmerdale, upstaged fellow guests in a show-stopping ensemble.
Opting for a high-glamour look, Palett - who's pals with Jorgie Porter's co-star Stephanie Waring - made occasion-dressing look simple as she paired checkered trousers with a barely-there lace bra top.

On her feet, the Emmerdale beauty rocked a glittering pair of pointed Kurt Geiger heels.
She kept her brunette locks sleek and straight to fall around her shoulders in a blunt medium cut.
Meanwhile, petite starlet Jorgie Porter chose a feminine look with a checkered co-ord, featuring a Tee-sleeved top and a fashion-savvy midi skirt.
Flashing a little tum was the order of the day as fellow guests paired abs-boasting crop tops with trousers and skirts, although Jorgie shunned the trend temptation by wearing her skirt high on her hips.
She looked effortlessly gorgeous with hair tied into a messy low bun, but maintained a high glamour finish with bold eyelashes and a slick of rouge lipstick.

To co-ordinate with the all black and white ensemble, she picked out a pair of pointed black courts where other starlets at the party had chosen sleek sandals for the balmy 30-degree evening.
The look is a departure from her on-screen glamazon character Theresa McQueen but it seems she's just getting ready to breathe new life into her character as she returns to film episodes of the show.
While Theresa McQueen is still in prison on the reality TV favourite, producers say we can expect to see a 'reinvigorated Theresa' in the coming months.
