SHADOW PLAYER | ALEXANDRA PHILLIPS

As a working creative, there has always been a desire to step away from the computer screen and explore my vision behind the camera lens. Having been mostly in front of the camera, I’ve always found so much more satisfaction taking photos rather than editing ones that featured myself. During my annual leave I made sure this happened and finally styled and shot my very first shoot.

From fleshing out the concept to styling the looks, there was one thing I wanted to communicate above all - my creative aesthetic. Close friends of mine can pick whether a certain piece of graphic design was created by me, and here I planned to do the same and begin to cement my photographic style in these shots.

Titled "Shadow Player", this visual story takes a dark spin on just some of my favourite trends at the moment eg. wardrobe essentials like the denim and leather jacket, layered crystal necklaces, cute chokers, ripped jeans and edgy street-goth inspired looks. My model muse is Alexandra Phillips, whom first caught my eye with her exotic looks at an event a couple years ago. With her ethnic ambiguity and youthful beauty, I was thrilled to have her involved.

Alex is a bright, young 22-year old who has a lot going on for her. Studying a Bachelor of Arts in Media with a Bachelor in Commerce in Marketing, she has ventured into the digital marketing world through her internship at Found Juice which landed her the role of Junior Content Manager and later interned for clothing label bassike in PR and Marketing. She is currently working as a Marketing Assistant at eBay inc. whilst also developing her passion for acting and screen production at NIDA. Her latest achievement and biggest highlight to date is her feature in Brisbane-based indie band Sheppard's videoclip of 'Geronimo', which reached Number 1 on the Aria charts. During our shoot I was able to squeeze in a little questionnaire. See below!

YOUR ONLY BLACK SWAN: You have a really exotic look. What nationality are you?

ALEX: Filipino, Irish (and Spanish)

YOBS: Being a “Euroasian”, what is your favourite thing about being part Filipino and Irish?

A: I love being exposed to both cultures, I believe it has made me very open minded and appreciative of other cultures.

YOBS: How would you describe your personal style?

A: This is a very difficult question! I range from minimalist, to strong, structural, architectural shapes, to basic staples with twists. At the moment my favourite brands are Rick Owens, Dion Lee, YSL, bassike, Alexander Wang, Balmain, Kanye West and Emilio Pucci! And I'll just stop there...

YOBS: What is your never-fail outfit?

A: Black leather or wet jeans, white or black turtle neck and my adidas kicks.

YOBS: What are some of your guilty pleasures?

A: Cookie dough, starburst lollies, McDonalds Happy Meal (with 6 pack nuggets of course)

YOBS: Favourite song at the moment?

A: 'Geronimo' By Sheppard because I am acting in it ;)

YOBS: If you could eat one cuisine for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A: Seafood

YOBS: Favourite place on earth to date?

A: New York (followed by LA)

YOBS: Is there something people don’t know about you?

A: I have flown a plane.

YOBS: What do you hope to achieve by the end of 2014?

A: To graduate from my double degree at Uni! Pursue my acting further. Grow in my job at eBay inc.

5 MINUTES WITH ALEXANDRA PHILLIPS | EVERY LAST SECOND

5 MINUTES WITH ALEXANDRA PHILLIPS | EVERY LAST SECOND

WE CHAT TO EMERGING SYDNEY ACTRESS ALEXANDRA PHILLIPS…
KNOWN FOR STARRING ROLE IN CHANNEL 9’S ‘HOUSE OF HANCOCK’ ALONGSIDE SAM NEILL, WE SPENT SOME TIME WITH HER TO FIND OUT ABOUT HER RECENT MOVE TO LA, WHAT HER PERSONAL STYLE IS AND MORE ABOUT HER LIFE AS AN ACTRESS.
Team 1980 Long Sleeve Crop Top

WHAT’S YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE SINCE MOVING TO LA FROM SYDNEY?

The initial transition was surprisingly easy, I won the Hollywood Immersive Acting competition so they took care of accommodation, acting training and all that for me for a while. It was an amazing introduction to LA. LA is similar to Sydney weather wise and having to drive everywhere. It also helps being raised on American television and knowing a lot about the country already. I’m living in West Hollywood and it’s an awesome feeling walking down historic streets like Sunset Blvd or Hollywood Blvd where there’s so much rich history. But I definitely miss Sydney’s beautiful views and beaches. I’ve travelled a lot in the past year to over 15 countries and it really makes me appreciate home.

WHEN DID YOUR INTEREST IN ACTING BEGIN?

My interest in acting began during a time when a bunch of little triggers were happening. I was studying screenwriting and production at University and then at the same time my model agent started getting requests for film auditions. So, it kind of came to me naturally in an unexpected way. I then landed my acting agent in Sydney after doing a music video called Geronimo by Sheppard that went viral. Also, I’ve always been fascinated with human behaviour and read a lot about it, which probably led me into acting subconsciously.

HOW DO YOU KEEP ACTIVE AND HEALTHY?

I train in a martial art called Krav Maga, it’s Israeli military defence training. That’s a definite work out! I also go to LA fitness and take a bunch of classes and hit the weights too. When it’s not too hot I go hiking in Malibu and run the Runyon Canyon.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

My style I think is a hybrid of minimalism x street. I’m a sucker for a bomber jacket, white tee, skinny jeans and my Nike kicks during the day. At night, I dress more minimalistic with a classy edge, like a Dion Lee sharp blazer or a flowy Rick Owens skirt.
Glamorous Skirt Button Up Front Skirt

WHO’S STYLE ARE LIKING RIGHT NOW?

It’s constantly changing, but my top three right now would be Gigi Hadid, Fashion Blogger @thehautepursuit and Christine Centenera

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 MUST-HAVES FOR RIGHT NOW?

Stussy Margin Cut-Away Cropped Hoodie

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE?

My favourite movie is the “Pursuit of Happyness” starring Will Smith. It’s everything I want films to be; based on true events, inspiring, brings light to human rights issues, educates and entertains.

WHAT SONG/TRACK DO YOU HAVE ON REPEAT?

It’s an oldie but I love Yuna’s cover of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You”. I watched her recently perform at Soho House and have fallen back in love with her music. You have to listen!

Sydney actress Alexandra Phillips scores lead role in Hollywood thriller The Black Spot

Sydney actress Alexandra Phillips scores lead role in Hollywood thriller The Black Spot

LESS than a year after making the leap to Hollywood, emerging actress Alexandra Phillips has landed her first lead in a feature film.
Phillips, from St Ives, moved to Los Angeles in October last year after beating 6000 hopefuls and securing a position in the StarNow Hollywood Immersive program.
Best known for her part in Channel Nine’s telemovie House of Hancockalongside superstar Sam Neill, she has locked down an agent, a manager and a feature film in less than eight months.

The young actress is making the most of her Hollywood experience.

Phillips, 23, has also brushed shoulders with some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including actors George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Pacino.
“I’m settling in really, surprisingly well,” Phillips told the North Shore Timesfrom LA. “I was pretty lucky landing a feature film, it kind of emphasised why I’m here,” she said. “Not many actors come here and land a lead in a feature film in their first year.”
The former Brigidine College student will star in The Black Spot, a horror film about a group of friends who reunite on an island camping trip and discover a buried curse.
The thriller will film for three months from October in Hawaii, the Bahamas and the Big Sur in California
It is set to be released in the United States next year.

The 23-year-old said she was enjoying her first crack at making the big time.

Ms Phillips described her life in the US so far as “a lot of wait and rush” — a flurry of long auditions, then weeks of nothing at a time.
But landing the coveted lead role was a pay off for all the late nights she had stayed up learning scripts for roles that she missed out on, she said.
Phillips said her role of the “multidimensional” Sandra would be “challenging”.

Ms Phillips should be recognisable to Australians for her role on House of Hancock.

“She’s confident, sassy and strong but underneath that she’s quite insecure. I can relate to her strong side and her weak side,” she said.
Phillips said the role has given her the opportunity to make a name for herself in the industry.
“It will be my first feature film lead, so I guess it is my debut.”
