Gemma's latest role in fantasy thriller Byzantium sees her play a bloodsucking vampire called Clara, who raises daughter Eleanor, played by Saoirse Ronan, alone.
The screen beauty was inspired by her own mother Sally-Anne, who was raised her and her sister Hannah as a single parent, and she says her performance is a 'love letter' to her mum.
She said: 'It was a love letter to my mother. This film is about women and the complexity of being female.
'Clara's not a hero by any stretch, she's also a prostitute and she kills people.
'But more in the resilience and the protection of your child and how much you would do just to make your child's life easy. It's about unconditional love.'

Gemma Arterton vamps up her daytime look in skin tight leather trousers... before Byzantium promo kicks off

Still in character? Gemma Arterton vamps up her daytime look in skintight leather trousers... before Byzantium promo kicks off

|
She stars as a racy vampire in her new thriller Byzantium.
And it seems that Gemma Arterton has been taking style tips from her character as she stepped out in London wearing a pair of skintight leather trousers on Wednesday.
Looking edgy for her daytime stroll, the 27-year-old added a pair of matching black shiny shoes and a fitted black blazer jacket as she breezed through town.

The rising star, who's been spending a lot of her time in Hollywood recently, smiled to herself as she wandered on her own through the streets.
Having clearly put a lot of effort into her daytime look, the former Bond girl certainly stood out, and didn't seem to care who spotted her.
Gemma, who is about to start promoting the new vampire film, paired the trousers with a loose-fitting tan t-shirt and the long blazer.

She wore a huge brown leather bag slung across her shoulder and held it tightly to her across the front of her body.
In keeping with her usual style, Gemma wore her dark hair tied up in a messy bun on top of her head, sicking with her usual laid-back look.
She opted for minimal make-up, wearing just a touch of eyeliner and lipgloss but leaving the emphasis on her naturally flawless completion.

The star, who has reportedly split from husband in the last few months, also kept her jewellery simple, deciding against a necklace and wearing just a plain black watch and small rings on one hand.
Gemma is about to start the promo tour for her new Gothic thriller, in which she plays vampire Clara who is mother to Eleanor - played by Saoirse Ronan.
Costume designer Consolata Boyle doesn't disappoint with her array of corseted dresses and lingerie that showcase the vampire mother's journey through time but still referring to her historic beginnings in the 19th Century.

From Neil Jordan - the director who brought Anne Rice's novel Interview With A Vampire to life in 1994 - Byzantium is expected in UK cinemas on May 31st.
It has just been announced that Gemma will star alongside Tom Hiddlestone in a forthcoming Robert Capa biopic, in which she'll play Gerda Taro.

Gemma Arterton sports a frumpy look on day out

She's certainly no Bond girl anymore! Gemma Arterton sports a frumpy look on day out

|
Allure and sexuality are a given for any Bond girl, but that appeal was lost on Gemma Arterton as she stepped out in Hollywood on Sunday.

The actress looked rather frumpy in a baggy shirt and murky brown jeans on Melrose Avenue.

Doing a spot of shopping, one can only hope she was restocking her wardrobe with more stylish attire.

Looking like the perfect candidate to go in front of the panel on E!’s Fashion Police, Gemma’s usual public appearance is far more put together.

But as red carpet events usually see the actress benefit from a stylist, hairdresser and make-up artist, the former Bond girl showed just how reliant some stars are upon their beauty teams.
Currently, Gemma is awaiting the release of her new Gothic thriller Byzantium.

She plays vampire Clara who is mother to Eleanor - played by Saoirse Ronan.
For the last 200 years, the immortal pair have been running from their past, and funding their present through Clara's prostitution.
But Eleanor's weariness at their lonely life causes her to share their supernatural story to a male friend, only for it to lead the danger of their past right to them, and threaten their future.

Luckily Gemma wasn't in charge of the costuming for her role that demands the wardrobe of a sultry seductress.

Gemma Arterton dazzles in a scarlet puffball dress as she hits the red carpet at UK premiere of Byzantium

Prom princess: Gemma Arterton dazzles in a scarlet puffball dress as she hits the red carpet at UK premiere of Byzantium

|

She's pushed the boundaries with a series of edgy and fashion-forward ensembles throughout the 2013 awards season.
But Gemma Arterton took it back to basics in a simple red prom dress as she attended the UK Premiere of her movie Byzantium at the Glasgow Film Festival on Friday night.
The 27-year-old actress positively exuded classic elegance with her choice of a feminine and flirty scarlet frock by CH Carolina Herrera.

Highlight her enviably slim middle with an attractive cinched-in waist, the Hansel and Gretel star's choice of red carpet outfit flaunted her showstopping curves in all their glory.
The Kent-born beauty accentuated her perfect porcelain skin with the vivid colour of dress, while sweeping her auburn locks off her face to give her outfit the full attention it deserved.
Gemma showed off her flawless complexion by opting for natural make-up, while breaking fashion rules by teaming her red dress with a pair of hot pink spiked stiletto heels.

The star was joined on the red carpet at the Glasgow Film Festival by her Byzantium co-star Saoirse Ronan, who opted for a particularly fashion-forward ensemble.
While her asymmetric strap black bandeau dress seemed relatively straightforward from the outset, it featured an unusual sheer mint green sleeve on one arm and an emerald velvet sleeve on the other upon closer inspection.
The 18-year-old actress balanced on a pair of towering strap-detail stilettos, while letting her dyed red locks fall in loose waves around her shoulders.
Flawless: The Kent-born star let her natural beauty shine through by opting for minimal make-up, while sweeping her auburn locks up off her face into an effortless up-do

Gemma takes on the role of Clara Webb in Byzantium, which is set in both the 18th century and the modern day, and documents the tale of a mother and daughter vampire duo who form a deadly pact.
Saoirse plays Gemma's onscreen daughter Eleanor in the movie, which is directed by Neil Jordan and also stars Sam Riley and Jonny Lee Miller.
Gemma previously said of her role: 'She's brittle and she's a fighter. There’s blood and vampires and all of that, but we focus on the mother-daughter relationship.'
Fashion-forward: Gemma was joined on the red carpet by her Byzantium co-star Saoirse Ronan, who opted for an unusual black and emerald green asymmetric number
