With her racy see-through dress, and platinum hair style, Anne Hathaway was clearly delving into her experimental side for Monday evening's Met Ball.

The stylish star arrived at the occasion with a bleached crop in response to the gala's PUNK: Chaos to Couture theme.

The star showed off a great deal of cleavage and was a clear departure from the Academy Award-winner's usually demure looks.

Working it: Anne Hathaway debuted a stunning platinum crop at the 2013 Met Ball 

The Les Miserables actress stormed the event in a black vintage Valentino gown from the designer's 1992 archives.

The sequinned head-turner included feathered sleeves and mesh panels, which proved conducive to a slight wardrobe malfunction as she exposed a wayward nipple.

She slicked the sides of her platinum crop and added smokey eyes and lemon yellow nails to the edgy ensemble.

'I've wanted to do it forever! I love it!' Anne said to MailOnline when asked about her dramatic transformation. 

She took the Debbie Harry-inspired leap on Sunday, after being spotted with dark hair at restaurant La Esquina in SoHo on Saturday night.

Her husband, Adam Shulman, complemented his wife by adding 'guy liner' to his ensemble, which she appeared to love, saying: 'I told him to do it. I love it - it makes his eyes pop.' 

As the actress entered the event, her Devil Wears Prada co-star Emily Blunt greeted her, squealing: 'Oh my god! I love it!'

Meanwhile, Nicole Richie arrived at the gala in a white Topshop frock accented by bizarrely frosted tresses.

She contrasted the feminine gown with chunky gold and silver jewellery - including a series of spiked earrings - and oxblood lipstick.

But it was the Simple Life star's blue-tinged locks that became the focus of her ensemble as she posed on the event's red carpet.

The unsightly hairstyle substantially aged the young mother of two.

Similarly, sartorial tastemaker Diane Kruger opted for an elaborate magenta-dipped ponytail as she arrived on the carpet with boyfriend Joshua Jackson.

Likewise, Miley Cyrus honoured the evening's theme in a netted floor-length number.

The Can't Be Tamed singer, who earlier claimed top spot on Maxim magazine's Hot 100 list, vamped for the camera in crimson lipstick as she ran her fingers through her bleached spikes.

Nicki Minaj, Alicia Keyes, and Zachary Quinto also indulged in eccentric hairstyles with Nicki attracting attention with a wig of high blonde frizzy curls.

Lily Cole also added streaks of pink to her strawberry blonde bob, arriving in a lemon yellow and transparent full skirted gown. 

Her namesake Lily Collins wore bright blue streaks in her dark brown hair which looked startlingly dramatic in contrast to her dark eye make-up and floor length black studded gown.

They were on their best behaviour on the red carpet, giving their practiced poses as they tried to remain calm and collected.

But behind-the-scenes it was a very different story at Monday night's Met Ball, as the stars posted pictures of their antics on social networking sites.

While Jessica Alba posed up with Ginnifer Goodwin by a picture of a urinal, Julianne Hough captured the moment when her driver had to stop to change a tire en route.

As the Vogue event is one of the most high-profile fashion parties of the year, it's no surprise that the guests put every effort into getting ready, tweeting pictures of their beauty regimes for all their followers.

Instead of keeping the tricks of the trade under-wraps, the likes of Rita Ora, Emma Roberts and Jaime King took candid photos of themselves as they got ready.

British singer Rita posed in a white robe as a team of stylists got to work on her, writing: 'All hands on me #metgala @HairbyCynthia nailglam @reneegarnes.'

Hollywood star Emma posted a close-up of her face as a make-up artist got to work and later one of her bending down to fasten her shoes.

Proving that getting ready for a big event is all part of the fun, the stars didn't seem precious about exposing themselves before their looks were complete.

Jessica Alba chipped in with a picture of herself in the preparation stage, giving her fans a sneak peak of her intricate hair style before hitting the red carpet.

But Madonna's pre-Met Ball snap was slightly more staged, as she inexplicably posed in her full outfit doing some house work, writing: 'Tidying up before the #metball.'

And once the party started, it seemed that the celebrity tweeters stepped it up a gear, posing with their famous friends inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Kim Kardashian made the most of being invited to the party, and mingled with fashion designers including Valentino and Donatella Versace.
