A treasure trove of photographs showing Hollywood greats at work and play has emerged for sale after being lost in a company's cabinets for 40 years.

One picture taken by renowned British photographer Terry O'Neill shows Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot 'larking around' on the set of their 1968 film Shalako. 

Although some of the pictures would have been widely distributed to the press at the time, some may never have been used and many have been lost over the years, meaning these could be the only surviving copies.

The collection belonged to a South African film distribution company, Kinekor, and were rediscovered when the business was taken over.

The images are a mixture of film stills and PR shots as well as candid shots accumulated between 1965 and 1975.

One picture taken by renowned British photographer Terry O'Neill shows Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot 'larking around' on the set of their 1968 film Shalako.

In it the Scottish Bond actor is holding the glamorous blonde bombshell in a headlock.

Peter Sellers is captured in fun spirits at home with his wife Britt Eckland and their children, while another shows Steve McQueen on a mini motorbike that is a far cry from the manly machines he was normally known for.

A picture of director Roman Polanski with his new bride Sharon Tate taken in London, 1968, is a rather poignant one. Just 18 months later, while eight-and-a-half months pregnant with their child, she and four friends were brutally murdered at her home by the Manson family - a gang led by notorious criminal Charles Manson.

The collection also includes photos of her father when he was trying to track down her killers.

The 4,500 prints and transparencies are now being sold by Special Auction Services in Newbury, Berkshire. They have been divided into 66 lots which are expected to fetch £7,000.

Hugo Marsh, from the auctioneers, said the British seller, who has not been identified, hadn't been looking for the collection but acquired it through a business deal when Kinekor was taken over.

Mr Marsh said: 'This is a huge collection of film stills and pictures capturing Hollywood personalities.

'It took a long time to go through them but it was an absolute joy - it was almost like archaeology.

'They're taken over a ten-year period and it's a real slice in time that gives an insight into the industry then.

'It's a real treasure trove of that period of film. A lot of people think of the 20s and 30s as the golden age of film but the 60s and 70s produced some great movies.

'You've got images from films that have come from the Hollywood studios directly - MGM, Paramount, United Artists.

'They are very interesting in themselves because there are some cult films and really good titles there, like Chinatown and Catch 22.

'Then you've got lots of shots of very famous actors and directors - both pictures taken for PR purposes with their involvement and paparazzi shots that they clearly didn't have a say in.

'For example, there's pictures of Greta Garbo, who was very reclusive, doing yoga on her balcony. But then there's close up pictures taken by Cecil Beaton where you can see a real twinkle and he's obviously been able to catch her off-guard.

'You've got great ones of people like Michael Caine and Robert Redford taken early on in their careers.

'There's one of Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot which is wonderful. It catches them on set but not filming, just larking around. Who else could put Brigitte Bardot in a headlock and get away with it?

'And a great shot of Steve McQueen, one of the manliest film stars, on a set but he's on the least masculine bike you could possibly imagine.

'A lot of the images come from the Camera Press Agency, a respected British company who used jobbing photographers. The agency would hold on to the negative and send out the prints as required around the world.

'An awful lot have been destroyed but this cache of images has survived.

'Even images that were widely distributed at the time might not have been picked up and used.

'There's certainly pictures I have never seen before and some of them may be very rare and unusual.

'It's difficult to know how much they will make, they may go for far more than we've estimated.

'But there is a big difference between prints produced for exhibition and working prints. The vast majority of these that aren't for movies are all marked up on the back with printing instructions.'

The collection will be sold on February 25.

And Jessica Alba took home the gold in the style stakes when she arrived to Saint Laurent at the Palladium theater in Los Angeles on Wednesday. 

The 34-year-old wore a slinky metallic dress with a dramatic center slit, which displayed her sun kissed leg to maximal effect.

There's little wonder why Jessica was dressed in her nightlife best for the occasion.

But Kendall Jenner certainly kicked it up a notch for her first red carpet appearance at this year's event.

The 19-year-old model put on an incredible display as she arrived for the screening of Youth on Wednesday evening in her eye-catching Azzedine Alaia pieces.

As ever, she made sure one of her many enviable body parts was on show and this time, it was her pancake-flat torso that stole the limelight.

She donned a very short black crop top with a mesh-style overlay and transparent edging, giving a cheeky glimpse of her braless cleavage.

The item was paired with a hugely flowing, oversized skirt in the same fabric and design, hints of her endless legs showing through the swathes of net.

As one of the fashion world's hottest up-and-coming models, Kendall really proved herself as she cut an impeccable figure on the red carpet at the Grand Theatre Lumiere at the Palais des Festivals.

The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star turned this way and that to show off her directional ensemble from all angles and, at one point, made sure the drama of her skirt was visible as she held it out and spun around in the middle of the red carpet.

The raven-haired beauty wore her tresses pulled into a chic up-do, while also adding a splash of Hollywood glamour with scarlet red lipstick.

And, shortly after turning the red carpet her own personal runway, she took to Instagram to share with her millions of social media fans that she had had a great time.

Along with a stunning shot of herself making theatrical waves with her skirt in front of the hundreds of photographers, she wrote: 'I had fun #Cannes.'

Kendall was one of the many stars at the Wednesday evening premiere for Youth, which stars Jane Fonda, Rachel Weisz and Harvey Keitel among others.

The movie, written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino also stars movie icon Michael Caine and is up for the coveted Palme d'Or prize.

It tells the story of a pair of 80-year-old friends on holiday in the Alps, looking back at their lives and the time they have left.

One of the men is a film director struggling to complete his latest movie, while the other is a retired composer and conductor who is considering an offer to return to work. 

Meanwhile, Kendall has been enjoying herself in the Riviera town for the past day, after touching down at Nice Airport on Tuesday.

She spent time earlier on Wednesday with her BFF Cara Delevingne, who is also in Cannes for the 11-day long film festival, which ends on Sunday May 24.

The girls - who have been friends for a couple of years - looked relaxed as they meandered around the area together in casual but impeccably stylish clothing, and also laying down on sunloungers for a spot of sunbathing. 

Also at the Youth premiere were - of course - the stars of the movie, who turned out in their finest attire for their big night.

She looked far younger than her years as she stalked the red carpet like a pro, smiling for the cameras while posing with her co-stars.

Years of healthy living and a love of fitness has given the two-time Oscar winning actress a figure to die for, and something she gladly showed off in the fitted, dramatic frock.

Romanian actress Madalina Ghenea, 26, also looked gorgeous in a sheer white gown with a feathered hemline.

As is often the way at the Cannes premieres, the red carpet was lined with stars, from actors to models.

Also in attendance at Wednesday's screening were the likes of Karlie Kloss, Joan Smalls, Chanel Iman, Lara Stone, Petra Nemcova, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Doutzen Kroes, Izabel Goulart and newlywed actors Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder.

It was a double premiere night in Cannes on Wednesday: later in the evening, the stars were out once again, this time for the screening of Chinese film Shan He Gu Ran (Mountains May Depart).

Leading the way in a glamorous, shimmering gown was French actress Sophie Marceau, who is one of the jurors on this year's Cannes panel in the main competition section.

The youthful 48-year-old dazzled in a multi-coloured backless gown that glittered in the lights at the nighttime event.

French model and actress Louise Bourgoin also put in an appearance, as did Harvey Keitel who went along for his second red carpet event of the night, this time on the arm of his wife Daphna Kastner.
