DS Florence Cassell is rocked when an old school friend is murdered in Thursday’s Death in Paradise…

DS Cassell normally doesn’t let her personal life get in the way of her job as a police officer. She’s calm, professional, dedicated to her work and appears immune to the bumblings of DI Humphrey Goodman’s and his haphazard love life.

But she’s rocked when a body found at the bottom of a cliff turns out to be her old school friend Esther Monroe and the shock sends her into a tailspin! Here, French actress Joséphine Jobert reveals all…

What happens when Florence and Humphrey discover the body?
“They find this girl who has been murdered and it turns out Florence went to school with her and was friends with her when she was a kid. Florence is more involved emotionally in the whole murder inquiry and it’s hard for her to stay professional and not show too much emotion. She spends nights at the police station searching looking through case files to find the reason why Esther was murdered.”

Can Florence and Humphrey (Kris Marshall) work out why Esther was murdered – and who killed her?

Do we see a different side to Florence?
“Yes. It was different for me to be more emotional and show a different part of her. We don’t know much about her family, but we find out more about her childhood and her friends. We see that she’s not just a police officer, she’s a real person with real feelings.”

How is she getting on with Humphrey this series?
“She has a good friendship with him! He’s got a new girlfriend and she’s really happy about that – she encourages him and tells him to go for it!”

You’ve filmed in London as well as Guadaloupe this time, how did you find it?
“I love London – just walking around the city, shopping in Oxford Street or Regent Street, and the parks. It’s very different, though. There’s the weather, of course, but it’s also very noisy. In Guadaloupe we have church bells and cockerels, but here it’s the planes and cars!”

Does Florence struggle with the English cuisine?
“Not just Florence, but me! I got to have porridge in the hotel and it was okay, but I also tried pork scratchings and I’m not a fan. They’re disgusting!”

Do you get recognised now?
“In Paris I get recognised every day because I’ve done a lot of shows in France, but the first time I got recognised for this show was two years ago in Iceland and I was on top of a huge waterfall. I was freezing and there was a group of students and one of them said, ‘Oh it’s the girl from Death in Paradise!’ It was very weird. On Twitter, I also seem to have fans who are obsessed with my shorts – I don’t know why!”

How do you find learning your lines in English?
“It takes longer to learn them because I have to think about the accent, the rhythm and the pronunciation. Even after three years I still struggle with some words!”

Death in Paradise to return for sixth sun-soaked season in 2017

DI Humphrey Goodman and the Honore police will be back to solve new mysterious murders next winter

If the only thing that gets you through the winter is your weekly trip to the sunny island of Saint Marie, you're in luck. Caribbean-set crime drama Death in Paradise will return for a sixth season next year, after pulling in impressive ratings of over 6 million throughout its fifth run, which concludes this week.

The new series will see the return of DI Humphrey Goodman, played by Kris Marshall, as well as his Honore police team and "an impressive line-up of guest stars."

"I’m delighted that the fifth series of Death In Paradise has proved so popular. We’ve got more ambitious plans for series six, with a whole host of intriguing puzzles as well as the joy of working with our amazing cast and guest stars. We can’t wait to get back to Guadeloupe and start shooting," says executive producer Tim Key.

Series six will consist of eight hour-long episodes, produced by Sue Howells and executive produced by Key and Tony Jordan for Red Planet Pictures, and Elizabeth Kilgarriff for BBC1.

Death in Paradise series five concludes on Thursday at 9:00pm on BBC1

Appearing in Death in Paradise was my very first time acting in English.So the biggest challenge was to learn my lines in a very short time, make sure that everybody would understand me properly and express my character,Florence’s feelings as naturally as possible. Even if I know that people can hear my French accent, my goal is to provide the best English as possible when I act.

I think Florence brings a touch of charm to the show, but that’s not the only thing. She is really into her job, she’s passionate and talented. She is an action woman, ‘une femme d’action’.

Humphrey – I call him Humph – is the funny part of the series. He is intelligent yet clumsy and as talented as he is weird. He is indisputably the best detective the island of Saint Marie has ever known.

In contrast to other police series, there is very little blood or any type of violence on screen in Death In Paradise, and I think that’s why it’s so popular both in Britain and France. It is quite different as a drama and those differences come from the beautiful scenery, the originality and complexity of the cases. Also the relationships between the characters and of course, the British sense of humour.

You have to be very careful when you speak French around Kris Marshall, who plays Humphrey. He understands almost everything! I am very impressed with his learning capacity. He’s really involved with the French crew while we film in Guadeloupe, speaking and joking around in French with them on a daily basis.

I’m not sure I can tell you what French phrases I’ve actually taught him…Let’s just say that most people, when learning a new language, are only interested in ‘funny’ words.

Death in Paradise, series five, continues on Thursday, 14 January at 9pm on BBC One. Each episode will be available to watch in BBC iPlayer for 30 days after broadcast on TV.

Take a peek inside Death in Paradise HQ with Florence and JP

Tobi Bakare shows off his juggling skills in a sweet little video from the BBC set.

Here's your chance to get a closer look around Death in Paradise HQ thanks to DS Florence Cassell and Officer JP Hooper.

Joséphine Jobert and Tobi Bakare have filmed a quick promo in which they take fans around Honoré Police Station.

The duo reveal how the office is full of hidden scripts so they don't forget their complicated lines, while Tobi shows off his juggling skills.

The stars joined the main cast of the sunny BBC crime drama during last year's fourth series, replacing the outgoing Sara Martins and Gary Carr.

Kris Marshall and Danny John-Jules also star in Death in Paradise, which airs at 9pm on Thursdays on BBC One.

BBC One's Death In Paradise is one of the network's most successful shows, and we got the opportunity to chat to star Josephine Jobert

Returning this week to BBC One, Death In Paradise is one of the network's most successful shows, and we got the opportunity to chat to star Josephine Jobert about the new batch of episodes.

What was it that originally drew you to Death In Paradise and your character Florence Cassell?

The originality of the show. There are no other shows like it that I've had the chance to see. What I liked and still love about Florence is her passion and dedication for her career, her strong will, independence and fearlessness. Even though she's the girly, sexy part of the show, she's always the first one ready for action, whether it's taking on a chase or tackling a suspect in a pool. We'd definitely be best friends if I met her in real life.

You joined the show last series, how different was it filming the new series compared to your first time on the show?

Last year I came in when the show had already started to shoot for the series. I was the new kid on the block so I had to get to know the crew bit by bit. It was a challenge as they'd been working together for the past three years. It was also quite stressful as I was there to replace Sarah who was leaving. I wanted to do my best for the production that was trusting me with the role, the crew and the many people following the show. I was very lucky that they all were so wonderful and made me feel at home. This year was fun rather than stressful because I was coming back home to the family.

What should fans of the show expect from the new episodes?

Lots of things! Unfortunately, I'm not a spoiler fan. But I can tell you this... someone dies at the beginning of each episode. Kidding aside, besides the ongoing investigations, we find out more about each of the character's lives. There's some romance and all episodes have the right touch of humour.

As such a huge hit on the BBC, what do you think it is about the show that makes it so popular with viewers?

I think it's thanks to the right combination of murder investigations, humour and likeability of each character. The majestic scenery of Guadeloupe Island helps, too. Overall each person working on the show loves it and that translates to the screen when you watch it. I'm very proud of being part of this amazing adventure.

What is it like filming in such a luxurious location? Does it take a load off from work at the end of the day?

Yes and no. Let me explain. Yes because well, waking up to such beauty is so wonderful. But let's not forget that we're not there for fun in the sun. It's wake up calls at six if not five in the morning, hours on sets that are scorching hot, mosquitos that take us for an open bar, make up, costume and spotlights everywhere raising the temperature. All that under a blazing hot sun.

I have it easy because I'm always in shorts, tank tops, sandals and light summer dresses on the show whilst Kris and the others are always in suits. But all the hard work is well worth it. Waking up with beautiful views, visiting breathtaking shoot locations and meeting wonderful people along the way on our days off, all makes me feel very lucky and blessed.

Guest stars have become one of the exciting things about each new series, as a regular cast member is it nice to see fresh talent coming through the doors each time?

It is very interesting and enriching being able to work with so many talented actors. They're always happy to be there and bring their good heartedness with them on set. The downside is that they stay a short amount of time. Just as I get to know them a bit better, they have to leave. I always wish they could stay a while longer.

How does this show stack up and differ to your other work?

The major difference is that this is my first show in English. My preperation time was so much more vital for memorising lines and read throughs. In French shows it was easier. Working on Death In Paradise is very challenging, but it enables me to go further in my acting.

What's next for you? Can you share any details?

As for what's next, season six for a start. We are shooting in a few months from now. Before that, travelling a bit here and there, working on my English, getting back to singing some more and finding an agent in London would be great.

Death In Paradise returns to BBC One on Thursday 7th January at 9pm.
