'It was an eternal gift', Douglas said of being given the opportunity of portraying flamboyant pianist Liberace in the film Behind the Candelabra.
'It was right after my cancer', the Oscar winning star said haltingly, fighting back tears.
He added that he would always be grateful to co star Matt Damon, who plays Scott Thorson, the 'love of Liberace's life', according to Douglas, director Steven Soderbergh and producer Jerry Weintraub.
Douglas said that Behind the Candelabra was the first project he tackled since his extensive treatment for stage IV throat cancer.

The actor looked fragile but said he was 'grateful' to be at Cannes where the HBO movie is in competition at the Film Festival.
Pundits are speculating that Douglas's brilliant portrait of Liberace is a major contender for the festival's best actor prize although he faces formidable competition from Oscar Isaacs star of the Coen brothers picture Inside Llewyn Davis.
Douglas said that he met Liberace briefly just once when he was 12 years old. He was visiting his father, Kirk Douglas, at a home he kept in Palm Springs and Lee, as Liberace was called, had a house close by.

'Lee didn't have a hair out of place ', Douglas joked.
'Now I know why', he added referring to the immaculate wigs that Liberace wore.
Douglas said that it was the first time he had played a real character and that initially he was hesitant because Liberace was 'a big guy, one of his thighs was the size of one of mine', he told a press conference at Cannes.

Also, there was the question of playing the piano.
'I'm not a pianist. But we started off with a piano teacher and I said, 'This is not going to work''.
Douglas and the director used archive footage of the real Liberace playing and artfully edited the film.
But Douglas is seen at the piano and had lessons in where to place his hands.
'I've got my hands in the right place. And only an expert could pick up the finger movements'.

From the Fifties through to his death in 1987 Liberace, who wore make-up, furs, rhinestone-encrusted capes and diamonds, was a major fixture in Las Vegas and on television. He hid his gay sexuality, though most guessed.
Matt Damon plays the boyfriend who, perhaps, got closer to Liberace than any of his other lovers.
Damon didn't get to meet Thorson , who was recently in jail on fraud charges, but his biggest concern was his Brazilian spray tan.

Soderbergh said he felt the world needed to see 'Matt's Brazilian tan, all of it'.
Damon added that Soderbergh told him, 'Oh, I know where to put the camera to shoot that!'
Damon continued: 'My behind is very large in the frame and it's very evident.
'I've worked with this crew several times before and I wanted them to know that this is not something you can unsee. It will be seared into your memory forever'.
