Dancing On Ice heats up as five stars are given immunity

The battle is on! Dancing On Ice heats up as five stars are given immunity after skating duels...while the others face the public vote

After the first round of Dancing On Ice, which saw both Pamela Anderson and Lauren Goodger hang up their skates, the competition was well and truly on as the stars went head-to-head during Sunday night's duel show.

While Anthea Turner, Matt Lapinskas, Samia Ghadie, Keith Chegwin and Beth Tweddle were saved by the judges, the remaining contestants faced the public vote.

After five 'duel' performances, it was Gareth Thomas, Shayne Ward, Oona King, Luke Campbell and Joe Pasquale who came out bottom.

In a change from last week, the couple's skated in joint routines, pitching their skating skills against each other.

Skating first was former EastEnders star Matt Lapinskas, who was squaring up to rugby legend Gareth Thomas, both hoping to be saved from immunity.

Although Gareth took a few tumbles during training, he got to grips with the rodeo -tyle skating routine, wearing a fetching cowboy hat and tight leather waistcoat after admitting that he didn't mind being the underdog.

The pair were praised by all four judges for the fun routine, with former Pusscat Doll Ashley Roberts saying: 'That was so fun and an exciting way to open the show; you were both amazing.'

Robin Cousins also admitted that he enjoyed the performance: 'I loved it, I thought it was great energy from both of you. Gareth you have great, clean footwork. Matt, fantastic, but keep the feet clean.'

Jason Gardiner critisied the lack of rivalry between the pair, prompting Matt to say: 'It was hard. We were like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.'

'More like Brokeback on ice,' quipped Jason.

Unfortunately for the Welshman, the judges unanimously voted to save Matt, meaning that Gareth faced the public vote, despite the amount of praise from the panel.

Samia Ghardie, skating with partner Sylvain Longchambon, then went head-to-head with Olympic boxer Luke Campbell, despite the fact that she'd injured her ribs in rehearsals.

The soap star battled through the pain to perform and skated around the rink with apparent ease to 'This Is Love', with the support of her professional partner.

'Luke; strong, powerful and in control. Samia, where did that little minx come from? Brilliant from both of you,' said head judge Robin.

'Samia, you really stepped it up tonight, and your lines have improved so much. But Luke, it was Olympically bad,' said Jason.

'Did you enjoy it? Well tell your face. Your face was dead,' the contentious judge added.

Unsurprisingly after the comments, Samia was given immunity and sent automatically through to next week's show, while boxer Luke went on to face the public vote.

Beth Tweddle, who had been rushed to hospital with a stomach bug just hours before, pulled through to skate against Oona King.

'Amazing, absolutely amazing, well done for being here Beth,' said Karen.

'Baroness, that's a fitting title for you because that duel was baron of any attack or conviction,' said a catty Jason of Oona's performance.

But he had a different opinion of Beth's skate: 'Beth, you should be sick more often because that was much stronger than last week,' he said.

Robin agreed with fellow judge Jason when it came Oona's routine: 'Oona you need a bit of fire, but you didn't want it to be just nice.'

It was another clean sweep on the judging panel, as all four judges chose to save Beth, meaning that Oona's place on the show was in jeopardy.

Anthea Turner, who found herself in the skate-off last week, squared up to singer Shayne Ward in a battle to keep her place.

Both dressed in silver, they gave viewers a more sedate dance, resulting in some critisim from the panel.

'Better posture awareness,' said Jason of Shayne's skate. 'But I'm not getting enough of an emotional connection to the choreography.'

'Anthea you have such beautiful grace out there. However, once you get onto the ice it's not as confident as when you're off the ice,' he added.

'I really wanted to see that x factor and commitment to the lyrics,' said Ashley, speaking to Shayne.

Surprisingly, there was another clean sweep as underdog Anthea got four votes to stay in the competition, while Shayne needed public votes to be saved form the skate-off.

Evenly pitted were TV stars Keith Chegwin and Joe Pasquale, who wore identical pink, frilly shirts for their skating duel.

The light-hearted routine, which ended in an affectionate hug, was praised by the judges for its comedic value.

'You're like the skating Laurel and Hardy ,' said Jason. 'Keith - you have the moves of Homer Simpson, but also the likeability.'

'I tried to bring a bit of James Brown, but I'm afraid I was more Gordon Brown,' said Joe of his skate.

Keith swept the board after all judges voted to give him immunity, while Joe ended up facing the public vote.

After a dramatic Sunday night show, in which the stars were pitted against each other in a series of 'duels', Oona King has become the third contestant to be voted off of Dancing On Ice.

Going head-to-head with Gareth Thomas in the skate-off, the Labour politician lost out after her partner Mark Hanretty dislocated his shoulder as he crashed to the ice ahead of their routine.

In a chaotic final showdown, Oona and Mark manged to compose themselves and complete their 'save me' dance after the professional dancer was treated by the medics.

Despite being praised by the judges for picking themselves up after the incident, the pair didn't do quite enough to beat Gareth Thomas, who was top of the leader board last week

After Mark's dramatic fall, host Phillip Schofield floundered, unsure whether the pair would be able to complete the skate-off.

'I think it's going to be impossible for Mark to skate,' he said. 'But we've got fantastic medics here.'

Luckily for the pair, and for ITV bosses, the medical team 'popped' Mark's shoulder back in and he bravely started the dance again.

After the dance, the judges had to make their decision, and all apart from Ashley Roberts chose to save Gareth.

'This was one of the most dramatic skate-offs I've ever seen,' said Jason Gardiner. 'But I have to take emotion out of this - the strongest skater is Gareth.'

But Oona and Mark were magnanimous in defeat, with the professional skater sending his love to his wife, who is about to give birth to their first child.

Five of the skaters found themselves facing the public vote after failing to impress the judges during the main show, while the other stars were given immunity and were automatically put through to next week.

In unanimous votes, Anthea Turner, Matt Lapinskas, Samia Ghadie, Keith Chegwin and Beth Tweddle were saved after their impressive skating routines.

But the five who weren't so lucky were Gareth Thomas, Shayne Ward, Oona King, Luke Campbell and Joe Pasqual, who all came out bottom and ran the risk of being sent home.

Thanks to the public, the first star to be saved was boxer Luke Campbell, who had gone up against Samia Ghadie.

The second star to go through was former X Factor winner Shayne Ward, who looked delighted to have made it to next week, after his duel with Anthea Turner.

Funnyman Joe Pasquale was also saved by the public, leaving Gareth and Oona with the lowest votes and putting them both in the skate-off.

Before the results were announced X Factor winners Little Mix sang their new single, Change Your Life, on a platform above the ice as the professional skaters performed a routine.

The girls were dressed in metallic outfits for the performance, with Perrie Edwards sporting a crop of purple hair.

It's only Week 2 and it looks like Dancing On Ice judge Jason Gardiner is back to his Mr Nasty persona.

The choreographer gave a 3 to Lauren Goodger and her partner Michael Zenezini on Sunday's show, complaining their performance had 'all the sensuality of a walrus on ice'.

The former Only Way Is Essex star, 25, was incredibly nervous and had a further blow to her confidence during training when she suffered some falls during dress rehearsals.

The tanning entrepreneur and the French champion were the second to skate, performing to Alicia Keys's single Girl On Fire

She ended up getting 4 from all the judges, except Jason, who gave her a 3, meaning she had a disappointing total of 15.0.

Jason said: 'There was no connection, no heart. There was no sensuality... it had the sensuality of a walrus on ice.

'This was a beautiful piece and you could have made a lot more with it. Very disappointing.'

Robin Cousins agreed the performance was lacking: 'You did the steps. But you did them as if you'd just been given them. A little tentative. There were limited steps.

'You have to be more confident and not rely on Michael. It was adequate. You need to own it.'

Lauren took the comments on board and admitted she was 'very, very nervous'.

She said: 'I'm going to try my best and hope I'll be here for week 2. It's completely new. I don't want to go.'

Former rugby star Gareth Thomas was the first to skate with his partner Robin Johnstone, performed a rocky number to The Killers' All These Things That I've Done.

The judges with skating backgrounds both gave him high marks, while the dance judges weren't so flattering, leaving him with a total of 22.5.

Head judge Robin said: 'That was strong, powerful, there was solo-skating, crossovers, footwear was absolutely correct. I have to give you the credit for what your feet were doing and as a partner with the lifts.'

However, Jason urged him to perform more: 'It wasn't a bad opening. I was expecting you to be a disaster because you were a rugby player. You moved very confidently on the ice.

'You had good speed. I'm not getting enough of the light and shade from you. You've got the makings of someone who will go far in the competition.'

However, Jason's arch-rival Karen disagreed: 'I didn't feel that performance needed more light and shade. You performed it powerfully. There was a performance and there was that strength.'

Third to skate was comedian Joe Pasquale put on a flamboyant performance to Queen track Flash with his partner Vicky Ogden.

Towards the end of the dance, he attempted to do a pretend trip, but ended up slipping for real and ending up crashing on the stage.

He ended up with a lowly 14.0, including a 2 from Jason.

Karen was blunt with her opinion: 'He works so hard every day and there's no natural ability. Ice and skates and Joe just makes us laugh. It was entertaining.'

Jason said: 'The only 10 you're going to hear from me is ten-tative. Everything looked like you were on the brink of falling over.

'The only thing that was solid was the lift. Try and work on the technical aspects of this competition.'

She proved to be a pretty competent skater, ending up with a total of 20.5 - meaning she was second on the leaderboard.

A natural: Oona was praised by Robin Cousins for her 'natural instinct with the skating'

However, Jason was harsh with his score of 3.5, explaining: 'The arms looked like they were bringing in a plane. I wanted to see a little more sassiness. With your entrances and exits, you need to take care.'

However, head judge Robin disagreed: 'The skating is more than there. There is a natural instinct with the skating. There is a softness about your core. Fantastic.'

Next to skate was Olympic boxer Luke Campbell and his partner Jenna Smith.

Cutting: Despite being a boxer Jason told him 'There isn't the strength in the upper body'

There was a clear nod to his background as images of him winning the Olympics were projected on to the ice, with the song of choice being Gold by The Wanted.

However, he received a score of 18.5 with the judges agreeing he was too rigid on the ice.

Ashley said: 'You've got such a warm energy. When you started with the punches at the beginning... but the excitement didn't maintain throughout the performance.'

Jason was cutting as ever: 'I think there is potential. You're an Olympic boxer... but you looked like a weak feeble boy out there. There isn't the strength in the upper body.'

TV presenter Anthea Turner was the last to skate, performing with partner Andrew Buchanan to Adele's Skyfall.

During the VT Anthea was seen becoming emotional after a surprise visit from her husband Grant Bovey and her stepdaughters.

Following the visit a teary Anthea admitted that she just wanted to make them all proud and it seems she certainly managed it.

After her performance Robin said: ‘The positions were exquisite from the word go. I need to see more skating from Anthea Turner on the ice separate from Andy.

Karen agreed saying: ‘Great start. In the lifts you had the most beautiful positions.’

As did Ashley who added: ‘The lifts were beautiful. You were engaged with your partner. I enjoyed it.’

Pride: Anthea admitted that all she wanted to do was make her husband and her stepdaughters proud

Even Jason was impressed saying: ‘You looked beautiful. There were lovely moments with the body.’

She ended up receiving 4.5 from each judge, in a rare agreement from them giving her a total of 18.0.

The six celebrities skated for the first time on Sunday after Pamela Anderson was the first to be voted off last week.

She performed along with Samia Ghadie, Matt Lapinskas, Beth Tweddle, Keith Chegwin and Shayne Ward and their partners in Week 1, who briefly performed in a group dance at the beginning of the episode.
