Jennifer Lawrence lights up Cannes Film Festival in satin black and white gown to attend screening

A beguiling beauty! Jennifer Lawrence lights up Cannes Film Festival in satin black and white gown to attend screening

Jennifer Lawrence is famous for her wardrobe malfunctions.
But there was nothing awkward about the slender star as she hit up the premiere of Jimmy P. Psychotherapy Of A Plains Indian on Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival.
Jennifer, 22, arrived to the Benecio Del Toro-starring film wearing a comely monochrome strapless gown that showed off her smooth shoulders and back and fell in one satiny wave to her heels.

The black skirt featured a daring leg-baring side slit that was both sexy and practical.
The no-train number was virtually trip-proof and allowed little opportunity for missteps which Jennifer's elaborate outfits in the past failed to do.
Every now and then Jennifer offered views of her shapely leg and pretty ankle-strap high heels as she glided down the red carpet with the poise of a princess.

A large square-cut ring and diamond bracelet sparkled on her right hand, but her neck was purposely bare of any accoutrement.
She wore her honey-hued hair stylishly spritzed and tousled with long bangs parted to the side, allowing the ends to brush her shoulders.
Jennifer was not only perfectly coiffed, but her make-up was impeccable with bright berry lipstick adding colour to her two-tone ensemble.

Jennifer's co-stars in the adventure film Sam Claflin and Liam Hemsworth and Catching Fire's director Francis Lawrence (no relation) were also at Saturday's star-studded screening that seemed to bring out the who's who of the movie industry.
The actress was the smiling belle of the ball as she posed with the handsome trio in their classy tuxedos.

Not even the rain and sudden unfolding of umbrellas could dampen the numbers that continued to pour into the venue.
Also on hand at the event was Lady Victoria Hervey, looking smashing in a shimmery silver sequin number.
Eva Longoria was wearing a mint-green dress with provocative cut-out in back and a few minutes later risked indecent exposure as she gave her trailing skirt a lift while ascending the stairs in a light drizzle.

Nicole Kidman protects her big hair under an umbrella as rain soaks Cannes' red carpet opening ceremony

Mind the quiff! Nicole Kidman protects her big hair under an umbrella as rain soaks Cannes' red carpet opening ceremony

The rain be damned.
Nicole Kidman said the storms that soaked the Cannes Film Festival Red Carpet didn't bother her.
'It's only rain. It's pouring out there but I love the rain. I love it,' the 45-year old told the Mail.

'We complain when we don't get any. I can handle a rain shower,' the actress said as she ascended the red carpet looking simply stunning in a gown created for her by Dior.
She matched her dress with pink patent shoes.
Julianne Moore, also in Dior, braved the downpour.

As stars arrived at the foot of the red carpet they were greeted by brigades of ushers holding black golf umbrellas.
They were escorted to a covered area of the carpet to pose for photographers but they had to sashay up the steps with nothing overhead to protect them.
Nicole Kidman looked set to earn rave reviews in the style stakes on arrival in Cannes.

The star attended a photocall in the South of France on Wednesday in a racy black dress that put her décolletage on show.
She paired the figure-hugging number with bright mauve shoes and a black bow in her loosely styled hair.
The actress revealed that her husband Keith Urban will be flying in from the US to sit by her side as she helps judge movies at the festival.
Urban, a country singer and a juror on American Idol, will fly into the south of France on Friday to join Nicole as she views films that are in the competition.

The actress sits on a nine member panel of which Steven Spielberg is the president.
Other jurors include directors Ang Lee and Lynne Ramsay, and the two-time Oscar winning actor Christophe Waltz.
It's certainly one of the most high profile Cannes judging panels in years and it has generated a lot of interest.
Spielberg had his yacht sailed over from Florida and he plans to spend most nights on it with wife Kate Capshaw.

On Tuesday night Spielberg hosted a pre-festival supper for his judges in a private suite at the Martinez hotel.
'It wasn't exactly a bonding session because we already speak a common language of cinema. Either the films will bring us together or divide us',  Spielberg noted.
In once sense it was a team of rivals.
Spielberg and his film Lincoln and Lee and his move The Life of Pi were both battling for Oscar glory at this year's Academy Awards.

But the two film-makers played down the awards season campaigns.
'He's my hero', Lee said of Spielberg. Spielberg was just as complimentary.
Kidman said she gets asked to sit on film panels at festivals all the time and usually turns them down.
'I couldn't say no to this and I've known Steven for many years but to spend two weeks with him was a no-brainer', Kidman said.
The actress said that her husband Keith Urban had not given her any tips about how to work and behave on a jury.

'We've talked about him being on American Idol and me doing this but he hasn't offered any tips. I hope he'll watch some films with me though.'
The festival was kicking off Wednesday night with the European premiere of Baz Luhrmann's version of F Scott Fitzgerald's jazz-age tale The Great Gatsby.
Leonardo DiCaprio who plays the title role led his top stars Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher and Joel Egerton up the red carpet.

The film's visually stunning and features some beautiful performances but critics viewing the movie this morning were somewhat muted in their response.
However, Luhrmann observed that all his films were treated in a lukewarm manner when shown at Cannes, and he added that when The Great Gatsby was first published in the 1920s literary critics were harsh but the novel has endured to become recognised as a masterpiece.
In the US the film has taken over $60 million at the box office in America and is on its way to becoming a hit no matter what the critics write.

The Great Gatsby gang were going to several parties during the night .
First they'll attend a pre-screening cocktail reception hosted by Moet & Chandon. After the gala screening at the Palais de Festivals they'll attend the festival's official dinner. After that they will go to Warner Bros own after party at Qai Maxime Laubeuf and following that there will be an after-after bash thrown by DiCaprio for all his 'buddies' which is what he calls his mates.
Elsewhere in Cannes, Colin Firth was presenting the Chophard newcomer award to Jeremy Irvine.
Firth and Irvine, the young star of War Horse and Great Expectations, play the same role at different ages in the WW2 film The Railway Man.
