Katherine Jenkins wants baby daughter Aaliyah to sound Welsh instead of having a 'messed up transatlantic accent'

'I worry about it all the time': Katherine Jenkins wants baby daughter Aaliyah to sound Welsh instead of having a 'messed up transatlantic accent'

She may have been spending a good chunk of her time in New York following the birth of first child with husband Andrew Levitas.
But Welsh singing sensation, Katherine Jenkins, has revealed that she'd prefer that her six-month old daughter, Aaliyah, develops a Welsh accent, than a 'messed up' transatlantic one.
Appearing on the Jonathan Ross Show, the 35-year-old mezzo-soprano spoke about family life with her husband and their new daughter - but expressed fear about the effect of a transatlantic lifestyle on her tot.

The fiercely patriotic star explained to host Jonathan Ross that she fears her baby could develop an American twang, as opposed to her mother's beloved Welsh lilt.
Speaking about her first child with 38-year-old artist Andrew, she said: 'She’s [Aaliyah] amazing, I’m totally besotted with her.'
However the nature of the Dancing With The Stars contestant's transatlantic marriage means that Katherine, Andrew and Aaliyah are spending an increasing amount of time in his native New York.
And while there's no doubt that Katherine is enjoying her life in the Big Apple, she's slightly afraid her daughter's Welsh heritage might receive a hint of air-brushing - especially when it comes to her accent.

'I worry about this all the time, because I’m very proud of my Welsh accent,' she explained. 'I’d love her to have a Welsh accent but I wonder if she’s going to end up somewhere in the middle.
'If she’s going to have one of those transatlantic messed up accents which I don’t want her to have… I don’t know what’s going to happen.'
However Katherine admitted that she herself has adapted her accent to help her get by, admitting that people couldn't really understand her when she moved to London at 17 from her hometown Neath.
'I had to adapt [my accent] because I felt like nobody ever understood me,' she revealed.
'If she’s going to have one of those transatlantic messed up accents which I don’t want her to have...I do': She appeared to be quite concerned about Aaliyah's heritage being lost in translation

But she did add that it didn't take long for her to slip back into her native tone: 'I think that naturally it becomes a bit more English when I’m in London, and then as soon as I speak to my mum on the phone or go back to Neath it inevitably becomes full Welsh or very, very fast.'
Katherin gave birth to Aaliyah in September 2015, and announced her daughter's arrival to fans via social media, writing: 'We are absolutely besotted with her & grateful for the beautiful blessing of this happy, healthy, little miracle.'
The singer and her husband welcomed their first child a year after tying the knot at Hampton Court Palace in 2014, following a whirlwind seven-month romance.
