Elle Fanning takes a fashion risk at the Critics' Choice Awards in an unusual floral knitted bandeau dress

Flower power! Elle Fanning takes a fashion risk at the Critics' Choice Awards in an unusual floral knitted bandeau dress and clumpy platform shoes

She may only be 14 years old, but Elle Fanning is fast-establishing herself as something of a fashionista.
Breaking the mould of red carpet dressing, the teen star opted for a fashion-forward approach as she attended the 2013 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, California, on Thursday night.
Casting aside more traditional ensembles, the Super 8 actress took a risk with an unusual knitted floral number by Chanel, featuring pop-out pink flowers and green appliqué detail.

Rather than stick to the usual Hollywood uniform of short, tight, or plunging, Elle's floor-length gown featured a bandeau design and a loose-fitting style.
The young starlet teamed her red carpet dress with a pair of unusual grey and white platform shoes and simple, silver jewellery.
Letting her quirky dress be the centre of attention, the actress kept her blonde locks long and loose around her shoulders, while opting for a natural look when it came to her make-up, aside from a slick of unusual pink eyeliner.

Speaking about her ensemble, Elle told PopSugar: 'It's Chanel, I love the three dimensionals and mesh material.
'Today I was feeling a beachy, surfer look. A little floral and letting the hair down.
'I like the girlie look but you always need to have a little bit of masculine, which I think is the shoes. The clunky shoes.'
And she certainly seemed to be popular with the other attendees, embracing her Leaning Towards Solace co-star John Hawkes on the red carpet and posing alongside legendary director Steven Spielberg inside the venue.
Elle was up for Best Young Actor/Actress at the prestigious awards for her role in Ginger & Rosa, and although she eventually lost out to Quvenzhané Wallis in Beasts of the Southern Wild, she insisted the teen stars weren't in competition with each other.

She added: 'The nice thing about this category is that it's the next generation and we all have a really tight bond with each other. We're young and we can relate to each other.'
Despite her young age, the starlet has previously admitting she's not afraid to push the boundaries when it comes to fashion.
She told Seventeen magazine: 'I take a lot of risks. I like to stand out and look unique. I break out a lot of my vintage dresses. I'm not afraid.'
