It’s helped turned the likes of Leona Lewis, JLS, and One Direction into household names.
Indeed, the pandemonium that greeted the 1D boys in Leicester Square when they attended the world premiere of their new film on Tueday is testament to The X Factor’s ability to turn regular kids into global stars.
But while the band go from strength to strength following their appearance on the show in 2011, a new crop of contestants will be vying for this year’s crown when the new series kicks off on August 31.
The new series will see the usual tears and tantrums as hopefuls go through their make or break auditions – as well as a significant change to the judging panel.

Following the departure of Tulisa Contostavlos earlier this year, X Factor veteran Sharon Osbourne returns following a seven-year hiatus to reunite with old pal Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow and Nicole Scherzinger.
In a sneak peek posted on YouTube, judge Nicole – back for her second run after winning last year’s final with James Arthur – is seen wrestling with her emotions as she tells one boot camp bound hopeful: ‘From my heart it’s an absolute yes.’
Other snippets see Louis admitting 'there's nowhere to hide,' while Gary insists the judges are on the lookout for 'raw talent.'

Judging by the brief, 60-seciond clip it appears they find it - with one shot showing them on their feet while they roundly applaud a contestant, with Sharon emphatically declaring: 'Spectacular!'
The snippet also gives us a first person perspective of a nervous contestant as he makes his way into the audition venue, where he is welcomed by Dermot O'Leary before being handed his audition number and taking a seat.
Auditions for the forthcoming tenth series kicked off at Wembley Stadium in July with significant changes made to the audition process – which sees each hopeful perform in front of a live, and often merciless, audience.
This time round the show has reverted to its original acapella format, after which every contestant with three coveted yeses going on to a second audition in front of the live audience.
A source said: ‘The plan is to have the best of both worlds with regard to auditions. So the contestants will start with just the judges in an audition room. If they get through then they will go on to an auditorium.
‘Bosses believe it will bring more warmth back to the show because they know how popular the audition rooms were with both contestants and the audience at home.’

While the show goes back to its roots it’s also braced for further changes to the judging panel – with Louis already confirming this will be his last series and Gary joining him in heading for the exit.
Host Dermot O’Leary suggested Barlow was bowing out after this year's show as he spoke on the red carpet at the world premiere of One Direction: This Is Us in London.
O'Leary's comment came as he discussed a possible return for Simon Cowell and seemed to back up a recent report that Barlow was ready to move on at the completion of his third series as a judge.
He said: ‘If Simon comes back, the dynamic would be very different. Gary wouldn't be there - he'll be leaving at the end of this year. Simon is a great judge so we'd welcome him back, but Gary's been such a great head judge as well.’

O'Leary admitted it would be a dream come true to join the judging panel alongside the likes of Barlow, Louis Walsh, Nicole Scherzinger and Sharon Osbourne.
‘Oh yeah man. I'd love to judge. I'd be so strict - I'd be nice and strict. I'd be so hardcore. I'd say it how it is,’ he said.
Barlow, who is said to want to focus on his career with Take That, has remained tight-lipped his future on The X Factor which he joined in 2011, saying recently that it was "too early" to speculate about his involvement beyond the upcoming season.
A spokesman for the show said: ‘We are currently focusing on the forthcoming tenth series, and no decisions will be made on next year's judging panel line-up until further down the line.’
O’Leary added: ‘It's a good panel this year. There's no bitchiness to it, but they wind each other up. Sharon's brilliant. Having Sharon back, she has just been a revelation, she really has. I hope she stays.’
