Amazing collection of Hollywood glamour photos from 1960s & 70s is discovered after 40 years hidden in company files

Snapshots from the golden age of Hollywood glamour: Amazing collection of photos from 1960s and 70s is discovered after 40 years hidden in company files

  • John Wayne, Liz Taylor, Greta Garbo and Alfred Hitchcock are some of the big names who feature in the collection
  • Some of the pictures may never have been used before - meaning these could be the only surviving copies today
  • Photo taken by renowned photographer Terry O'Neill shows Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot 'larking around'
  • Images are a mixture of film stills and PR shots as well as candid shots accumulated between 1965 and 1975
A treasure trove of photographs showing Hollywood greats at work and play has emerged for sale after being lost in a company's cabinets for 40 years.
One picture taken by renowned British photographer Terry O'Neill shows Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot 'larking around' on the set of their 1968 film Shalako.
Although some of the pictures would have been widely distributed to the press at the time, some may never have been used and many have been lost over the years, meaning these could be the only surviving copies.
The collection belonged to a South African film distribution company, Kinekor, and were rediscovered when the business was taken over.

In it the Scottish Bond actor is holding the glamorous blonde bombshell in a headlock.
Peter Sellers is captured in fun spirits at home with his wife Britt Eckland and their children, while another shows Steve McQueen on a mini motorbike that is a far cry from the manly machines he was normally known for.
A picture of director Roman Polanski with his new bride Sharon Tate taken in London, 1968, is a rather poignant one. Just 18 months later, while eight-and-a-half months pregnant with their child, she and four friends were brutally murdered at her home by the Manson family - a gang led by notorious criminal Charles Manson.
The collection also includes photos of her father when he was trying to track down her killers.
The 4,500 prints and transparencies are now being sold by Special Auction Services in Newbury, Berkshire. They have been divided into 66 lots which are expected to fetch £7,000.

Hugo Marsh, from the auctioneers, said the British seller, who has not been identified, hadn't been looking for the collection but acquired it through a business deal when Kinekor was taken over.
Mr Marsh said: 'This is a huge collection of film stills and pictures capturing Hollywood personalities.
'It took a long time to go through them but it was an absolute joy - it was almost like archaeology.
'They're taken over a ten-year period and it's a real slice in time that gives an insight into the industry then.
'It's a real treasure trove of that period of film. A lot of people think of the 20s and 30s as the golden age of film but the 60s and 70s produced some great movies.
'You've got images from films that have come from the Hollywood studios directly - MGM, Paramount, United Artists.
'They are very interesting in themselves because there are some cult films and really good titles there, like Chinatown and Catch 22.
'Then you've got lots of shots of very famous actors and directors - both pictures taken for PR purposes with their involvement and paparazzi shots that they clearly didn't have a say in.
'For example, there's pictures of Greta Garbo, who was very reclusive, doing yoga on her balcony. But then there's close up pictures taken by Cecil Beaton where you can see a real twinkle and he's obviously been able to catch her off-guard.
'You've got great ones of people like Michael Caine and Robert Redford taken early on in their careers.

'There's one of Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot which is wonderful. It catches them on set but not filming, just larking around. Who else could put Brigitte Bardot in a headlock and get away with it?
'And a great shot of Steve McQueen, one of the manliest film stars, on a set but he's on the least masculine bike you could possibly imagine.
'A lot of the images come from the Camera Press Agency, a respected British company who used jobbing photographers. The agency would hold on to the negative and send out the prints as required around the world.
'An awful lot have been destroyed but this cache of images has survived.
'Even images that were widely distributed at the time might not have been picked up and used.
'There's certainly pictures I have never seen before and some of them may be very rare and unusual.
'It's difficult to know how much they will make, they may go for far more than we've estimated.
'But there is a big difference between prints produced for exhibition and working prints. The vast majority of these that aren't for movies are all marked up on the back with printing instructions.'
The collection will be sold on February 25.

Happy Mother's Day! Portraits of celebrity mums and daughters including Jo Wood, Liza Minnelli and Twiggy in new exhibition by photographer Terry O'Neill

Happy Mother's Day! Portraits of celebrity mums and daughters including Jo Wood, Liza Minnelli and Twiggy in new exhibition by photographer Terry O'Neill

  • London exhibition pays tribute to Mother's Day with iconic celebrity photos
  • Collection taken from archives of iconic British photographer Terry O'Neill
  • Famous daughters include Holly Willoughby, Alesha Dixon and Leah Wood
British photographer Terry O'Neill has unveiled a new exhibition of celebrity mothers and daughters, including Jo Wood, Twiggy and Judy Garland, just in time for Mother's Day.
The new collection, Mum: A Snapshot, is led by Jo Wood and daughter Leah, who appear in the exhibition twice thanks to a 1981 shot of the pair on tour with Ronnie Wood and the Rolling Stones.
Capturing the special bond between mother and daughter, the show has been created in homage to the photographer's own late mother, and is free to the public this weekend, at London's White Space gallery.

'I actually did it in homage to my mother who I never had a chance to thank, because she died when I was young,'  Terry O'Neill told This Morning.
'I never had a chance to thank her, and as you grow older of course you appreciate your mother more.'
He added: 'So I got together this exhibition as a tribute to Mother’s Day.'
Terry has been photographing celebrities for the last 50 years and the new show features both old and new pictures.

A rare gem among the collection, which was created in association with online gift specialist Not On The High Street, is a touching photograph of Liza Minnelli pictured with her mother Judy Garland, in 1963.
Terry said: 'That was when I was 20 years old, I worked on the Daily Sketch, which was a tabloid paper at the time, and I got sent round to photograph Liza Minnelli.
'I go round to this mews house in Belgravia, door opens and it's Judy Garland!
'We got on well, and she made dinner for me and her daughter too.'

Other subjects in the heart warming collection include Emilia Fox and mother Joanna, Holly Willoughby and her mother Lynn, as well as British icon Twiggy and daughter Carly Lawson.
Several of the shots which feature in O'Neill's exhibition were originally intended as gifts for the husbands of the women pictured.
The 1980 shot of actress Nanette Newman, photographed with her daughters Sarah Standing and TV presenter Emma Forbes, was blown up by the photographer as a surprise present for the late Bryan Forbes, director of films including The Stepford Wives.

Swedish actress Britt Eckland also commissioned O'Neill to take a picture of herself with newborn baby Victoria in 1965, as a surprise gift for her husband Peter Sellers.
The photographer revealed that the actress was still in a London hospital after giving birth, but looked radiant nonetheless.
Britain's Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon also appears in the exhibition, along with Gloria Hunniford and her late daughter Caron Keating, plus models Jodie and Jemma Kidd with mother Wendy.

Confessions of a 'reluctant' sex bomb: Britt Ekland

Confessions of a 'reluctant' sex bomb: Dope smoking with Sellers, how Rod wore my underwear and why I walked out on a date with Beatty, by Britt, 70

|

A gentleman never tells. A lady in her eighth decade? Frankly, she can say what she wants.
Britt Ekland has lifted the lid on her colourful love life, revealing the secrets – and ineptitudes – of old flames including Peter Sellers, Rod Stewart and Warren Beatty.
But while the former Bond girl, 70, has dated some of the world’s most eligible bachelors, she described herself as ‘the most reluctant sex bomb’ – and said she ‘had no idea what effect I had on men’.

Indeed, she’s more than happy on her own. She said: ‘I have not had a man for 20 years. If I did miss it, why would I not have one?’
Miss Ekland married British actor Sellers, who was 17 years her senior, after a ten-day courtship in 1964. The couple divorced four years later, following a turbulent marriage marred by Sellers’s manic depression. He died in 1980.
Recording an episode of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, she said: ‘What was I thinking? That is what I should have asked myself. I just fell madly in love with him. He was very suave and sophisticated. The age gap did not bother me.

‘I never wanted that life, but he proposed and I did it. If I could go back and say wait, then I would. But you can’t.’
Miss Ekland also described how Sellers wooed her with drugs. She said: ‘He asked, “Have you ever smoked a cigarette like this? It’s marijuana. This is what you do.” I did this and the next thing I remember I was on the terrace and he was kissing me.’
She said she was ‘heartbroken’ when their relationship ended, adding: ‘If I had known what he was like I would have probably put him on lithium and he probably would have had a much longer and happier life.’
Miss Ekland said she suffers from 'body dysmorphia' and does not see what others do. 'I just see my faults,' she said

She said Sellers was ‘very, very insecure’, adding: ‘I don’t think he was a domesticated man. I don’t think he was capable of making a cup of tea.’
As for Warren Beatty, who is famed for reportedly seducing 12,775 women, Miss Ekland described him as ‘not the most divine lover of all’.
She said he tried to seduce her in 1970 by taking her to a pornographic film: ‘I was truly shocked as I was brought up practically as a Victorian person. I am a prudish person. I wanted to get out of there and I left.’
The actress was more kind to the Queen’s cousin, Lord Lichfield, describing him as ‘gorgeous’. But she turned down his marriage proposal because she ‘never wanted to be a Lady’. In 1972 she briefly dated actor George Hamilton, whom she described as ‘one of the funniest men I have ever known’.
In an odd twist, Hamilton’s wife, Alana, would later leave him for Rod Stewart – when the singer was dating Miss Ekland.
She denied Stewart’s claim that she used to send him parcels containing love notes and knickers, saying: ‘Rod did wear my underwear on stage, but only to keep the package in place.’

Describing the moment she found out Stewart, now 68, had been unfaithful, she said: ‘George Hamilton told me, “Oh how funny, [Alana] has just left me for your ex-boyfriend.” Suddenly a light went on and I thought “Rod”. I got in the car and drove home. I wanted to throw up.’
She added: ‘He never said sorry. Never. I wish he had. I think that would have brought it to an end. I think it is only fair to do that.’
Despite her blonde bombshell looks, Miss Ekland said she was a ‘fat and dumpy kid’ and remained unhappy with how she looked.
She said: ‘I think I suffer from body dysmorphia as I don’t see what other people see. I just see faults. Like too big a bum, my ears used to stick out. I have never liked my body.’
The interview will be broadcast on March 29.
