Emma Thompson, Judi Dench, Kate Winslet, Idris Elba and Chiwetel Ejiofor lead the way as Brits dominate Golden Globe nominations

'Absolutely thrilled': Emma Thompson, Judi Dench and Kate Winslet lead the way as Brits dominate Golden Globe nominations

It might be a primarily American award ceremony, but the Golden Globe nominations have been dominated by strong, British thespians.
Three British leading ladies have been nominated to the Best Actress in a motion picture award; Kate Winslet for her role in Labor Day, Emma Thompson for her part in Saving Mr. Banks and Judi Dench for her performance in Philomena.
Winslet said she was 'extremely surprised and absolutely thrilled' to be nominated.
But it’s not just the girls leading the way, Mandela star Idris Elba, the cast of Downton Abbey and Coldplay have all been nominated for awards.

The ceremony is set to take place early next year, and looks to be a star-studded event.
British actors Chiwetel Ejiofor and Idris Elba have been nominated in the Best Actor category for their roles in 12 Years A Slave and Long Walk To Freedom.
Ejiofor said: 'It is such a huge honour to be nominated for two Golden Globes and I would like to thank the members of the HFPA for this incredible recognition.

'The response to 12 Years A Slave and Dancing On The Edge from the public and media alike has been overwhelming and I am so very grateful. To have been a part of these amazing projects was a gift in itself, that the HFPA have responded in this way, truly means so much.'
British director Steve McQueen will be celebrating his nomination for Best Director for the stirring movie 12 Years A Slave, as will London-born actress Sally Hawkins who’s been nominated for her kooky representation of Ginger in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.
And Sally will be hoping to follow her winning streak with another award next year, after winning Best Actress for her role in Happy Go Lucky in 2009.

The aforementioned Emma Thompson, Judi Dench and Kate Winslet are all going up against each other, as well as Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, for the Best Actress title.
It’s a bittersweet moment for Steve Coogan who, alongside Jeff Pope, has been nominated in the Best Screenplay category for Philomena – a movie based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith.
But the Alpha Papa actor was notably not nominated in the Best Actor category for his role in the movie – whereas his co-star Judi Dench has been praised for her performance.

Naomie Harris accentuates her slim waist in gold embellished peplum dress at Royal Film Performance of Mandela

A Winnie-ng look! Naomie Harris accentuates her slim waist in gold embellished peplum dress at Royal Film Performance of Mandela

She hasn’t been afraid to show some skin in recent months as she promotes her latest film in various daring frocks.
But on Thursday evening Naomie Harris decided to keep it demure as she walked the red carpet at the Royal Film Performance of Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.
Showing off her incredible figure the 37-year-old, who plays Winnie Madikizela in the film, wore a strapless black dress featuring an embellished peplum detail by Alexander McQueen.

While her toned arms and shapely shoulders were on show, it was her very slim waist – accentuated by the gold detailing of the peplum – which took centre stage at the Odeon Leicester Square.
The actress added to her very elegant look, which was very appropriate in the company of royalty, by wearing her hair in big bouncy waves falling down her back.
A finishing touch was made with a pair of silver peplum detail, creating a truly stunning red carpet look.

Naomie was of course joined by Idris Elba, who plays plays Nelson Mandela in the biopic film which is based on South African President Nelson Mandela's autobiography of the same name.
The Hackney born actor looked his usual dashing self, wearing a fitted suit with a thin black tie.
The film chronicles Mandela's early life, coming of age, education and 27 years in prison during the apartheid era before becoming President.

Speaking at the premiere Naomi said she was delighted that William and Kate were there, saying:
'I have met him before several times at the polo and I hear she is just as down to earth as him.'
And it seems Kate was just as happy to be there as she dressed to impress for the occasion wearing a daring dress by French designer Roland Mouret featuring a thigh high split.
The Duchess, who was joined by her husband Prince William, added an eye-catching costume jewellery necklace to cream gown, while her hair was swept back in a modern ponytail to show off her dramatic neckline to best effect.

The film itself, which has been 16 years in the making, has received mixed reviews from critics, but Elba, who is best known for his role as a detective chief inspector in the hit TV series Luther, has been praised as ‘towering’ and ‘Oscar-worthy’.
Speaking on the red carpet last night he told Mail Online: 'Everyone knows who Mandela is, everyone has an idea of what he sounds and looks like. I worked really hard to pull in all the elements, from the sound of his voice to the way he walks. I don't look anything like him but it was really important the audience got a sense of who Mandela is because the likelihood is that we will never meet him in person.
'For somone who doesn't look like Mandela you have got to work harder to get the audience in there.

'I think he [Mandela] has seen parts of the film but ultimately it's about his life, he's been there, he's done it - so he might not even need to see it.
'Tonight is extra special because this is my country and when the royals come out to watch a film it's. a big deal. I feel very proud that it's my film, really proud.'

Each year the Royal Film Performance is staged to raise funds for the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund, which supports industry employees and their families in times of hardship.

Idris Elba's long walk to freedom begins: First look at trailer for Nelson Mandela biopic

Idris Elba's long walk to freedom begins: First look at trailer for Nelson Mandela biopic

A first small glimpse has been released of the hugely-anticipated Nelson Mandela movie Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.
British actor Idris Elba plays the extraordinary South African leader and campaigner and he is heard reading from Mandela’s autobiography A Long Walk To Freedom – in a convincing accent.
Elba is not seen in close-up however – the 1min 13sec clip features the star walking across a plain towards a stunning sunset surrounded by children, and waving.

The Luther star’s first words are ‘I have walked the long walk to freedom. It has been a long walk and it is not over yet’.
Bond girl Naomie Harris plays Winnie Mandela in the biopic, and she has her own new poster for the film, which has the tagline ‘the leader you knew, the woman you didn’t’.
The movie tells the extraordinary story of Mandela's life, from his childhood in a rural village to being imprisoned on Robben Island and then becoming the first democratically elected president of South Africa in 1994.

Remarkably the film is an mainly-British affair, with Elba as Mandela, Harris as Winnie and director Justin Chadwick of The Other Boleyn Girl taking the reins.
Elba is already the favourite to win an Oscar for the part in 2014. He has never met Mandela but said: ‘It meant so much to me, it's such a massive opportunity to be part of a true legend's life, and more importantly, the film re-educates people on this legend.
‘I never met Mr. Mandela because he was very ill, so our interpretation of him was without his personal influence. But the script is such a good script, and obviously it comes from his book, and the book speaks for itself.’

Elba admits he looks ‘look nothing like him’ but judging by the trailer he certainly has studied Mandela’s voice.
As for Harris, playing Winnie Mandela was the ‘toughest thing’ she’s ever done.
She explained: ‘For me, that was the most challenging role that I've ever played and I absolutely loved playing her - right from this innocent woman to this warrior figure.

‘That journey for me was the most challenging that I've ever done and I've enjoyed that the most.’
The film is released in cinemas on 3 January 2014.
Elba is currently starring on TV in the third series of Luther, in which he plays a cop, and in new movie Pacific Rim. He made his name in the hugely-acclaimed US series The Wire, playing drug dealer Stringer Bell.
