Kara Tointon works off-duty chic in slogan top and ripped skinny jeans as she enjoys secret Prince gig in London

Prince’s secret gig in north London on Monday night was attended by a range of stars.
And Kara Tointon was among the fans who watched the music icon as he performed at Camden’s KOKO for a top-secret performance.
The 31-year-old actress worked a simple but chic off-duty look as she teamed a long black coat with black ripped skinny jeans.

The former EastEnders star added height to the look with black suede boots while she sported a grey slogan top which read ‘Expect nothing, Appreciate everything’.
Kara highlighted her natural beauty with subtle make-up and a glossy red lip while she styled her locks into a curly ‘do.
The actress is currently starring in the hit ITV drama, Mr Selfridge, and the single starlet has already found herself romantically linked with both with Jeremy Piven, who plays Mr Selfridge himself, and the show’s French actor Grégory Fitoussi, who plays Harry’s deputy Henri Leclair, after being pictured out with them.

Speaking to Daily Mail, Kara explained: ‘Well, both times we were always out with a load of people but it looks pretty bad, doesn’t it?’
Kara famously started dating her Russian Strictly Come Dancing partner Artem Chigvintsev when they were on the show in 2010, but they broke up last year.
The actress has hinted that she would never rule out getting back together as she told the Mirror: ‘Well, he went to do Dancing With The Stars in the States because of visa issues here but we’re still very good friends. I’m OK. You never know what might happen in the future.’
Kara added that their relationship was 'wonderful while it lasted'.

Revealing their time together had come to an end in the autumn, the star explained: 'We are not together. We’re fine, but we aren’t a couple any more. The reason I haven’t spoken about it is because I hate reading about myself in that way.'
The star is currently resolutely single, keen to focus on her career, which has been given a boost with her new role in Mr. Selfridge, playing Rosalie Selfridge, who gets wed in the first episode of the new series.
The third series of the show, based on the real-life story of Harry Gordon Selfridge who founded one of London’s most famous department stores, is the darkest yet.

Kara Tointon brushes off rumours of a dalliance with Jeremy Piven and reveals why she split up with her Strictly lover

Romance with Mr. Selfridge? But he's my dad! Kara Tointon brushes off rumours of a dalliance with Jeremy Piven and reveals why she split up with her Strictly lover

Curled up on a sofa with their arms around each other, Hannah and Kara Tointon are two peas in an Essex pod.
They’re wearing almost identical washed-out skinny jeans, tight tops and high-heeled boots, they finish each other’s sentences, and when they laugh – which they do a lot – it’s almost always in unison.
The two sisters are television regulars; Kara found fame as Dawn Swann on EastEnders before winning Strictly Come Dancing in 2010, while Hannah started on Hollyoaks and has gone on to have parts in acclaimed shows such as Call The Midwife and The Inbetweeners.

But now, for the first time, they’re working together playing – yep – sisters in the new series of Mr Selfridge. ‘I got the job first,’ says Hannah, who at 27 is four years younger than Kara.
‘Don’t start!’ laughs her sister, before continuing, ‘I got a call saying I had an audition for a job on Mr Selfridge and that my sister had one ten minutes earlier. I thought they were for the same part – we’ve never had to audition for the same role before – so I called Hannah and said, “I won’t go for it,” but she told me I must.’
Thankfully, it turned out there were two roles on offer as Harry Selfridge’s grown-up daughters Rosalie and Violette, although they both dithered about taking them up once they were offered.
‘Because we’re so close to each other we weren’t keen on mixing the personal with the professional,’ says Kara. ‘But then our friends and agents pointed out that they were good parts we would ordinarily have leapt at. The producers say we got the parts on merit, but we know it possibly went in our favour that we have the same DNA and look similar.’
They look at each other and giggle. ‘But how often does it happen that you have something like that going for you? It’s such a one-off situation. We spent the first few days just giggling at each other because of the way we were dressed.’ Hannah butts in, ‘And when we had to speak seriously to each other it was so weird!’
Hannah (left)  joins her sister Kara (right) in the new series of Mr. Selfridge
Hannah (left)  joins her sister Kara (right) in the new series of Mr. Selfridge
Kara looks serious for a minute. ‘I think that’s one reason we weren’t keen at first; working with someone you love can just be weird. But then we realised that if we took the parts we wouldn’t have to do any auditions for a few months, and even better, it was filming in London.
'When we got the parts we watched the shows back to back on DVD. I’d dipped into it before but it’s the sort of show that if you binge-watch you get wrapped up in it. I love the way the writers entwine fact and fiction; and as the series moves on it gets more crazy and beautiful.’
The third series of the show, based on the real-life story of Harry Gordon Selfridge who founded one of London’s most famous department stores, is the darkest yet. It begins with a funeral as Harry buries his beloved wife Rose, and the seeds of his destruction – the real-life entrepreneur ended up penniless after losing his beloved store – start to be sown.
One of the first scenes in the new series shows Kara’s character Rosalie, Harry’s eldest child, marrying an impoverished Russian prince, Serge De Bolotoff (played by Leon Ockenden), who comes with an imperious mother Princess Marie (Zoë Wanamaker).
‘In the first few episodes we’re left wondering whether Serge has married into the Selfridge family for the right reasons,’ says Kara. ‘He’s a wannabe entrepreneur in his own right and we’re not sure of his intentions; Rosalie could really have done with her mother around.’
Even more troubled is Hannah’s character Violette. She’s a bit of a feminist and desperate to get more involved with the store, but when her father rebuffs her she starts hanging around at a seedy jazz club owned by former Selfridges worker Victor Colleano (Trystan Gravelle).
‘Violette wants to work like a modern woman of the age but her dad doesn’t want her to because of her place in society so she starts to rebel,’ says Hannah. ‘And then she gets involved with Victor, who isn’t really appropriate.’ Kara interjects, ‘She becomes a bit of a hussy.’ Her sister eyes her. ‘You can talk! What about all the rumours about you?’ They both start giggling.
Kara famously started dating her Russian Strictly Come Dancing partner Artem Chigvintsev when they were on the show in 2010, but they broke up last year. She’s coy as she talks about the split, ‘Well, he went to do Dancing With The Stars in the States because of visa issues here but we’re still very good friends. I’m OK. You never know what might happen in the future.’
As a result of her newly single status Kara has found herself linked both with Jeremy Piven, who plays Mr Selfridge himself, and the show’s French actor Grégory Fitoussi, who plays Harry’s deputy Henri Leclair, after being pictured out with them.
‘Well, both times we were always out with a load of people but it looks pretty bad, doesn’t it,’ she smirks. Hannah, who lives with actor Joe Thomas, who she met on the Inbetweeners set when she played his character Simon’s girlfriend, giggles,

‘It looks like you’re going through the cast; you look like a hussy! But if you have to be linked with anyone, Grégory is pretty hot.’ Kara laughs, ‘Yessss! He’s not bad looking. I don’t mind being linked with him.’
While Jeremy Piven is known for being a ladies’ man, both girls say he’s never even tried to flirt with them. ‘Why hasn’t he?’ asks Hannah, temporarily affronted. ‘Maybe it’s because he’s playing our dad,’ says Kara. ‘But he’s been lovely; very welcoming and extremely encouraging.’
Born in Basildon, Essex, to a normal and happy middle-class family, neither of the two sisters harboured ambitions to become an actress. Kara suffered from dyslexia and her parents – their father’s an accountant and their mother a housewife – sent her to a weekend drama school to help with her confidence. Hannah naturally followed a few years later.
‘We’ve both been acting since we were kids, but it was a hobby initially. It wasn’t serious,’ says Kara. ‘I was going to study art but then I kept getting jobs and then I realised I loved acting and I decided to see what happened.’ Hannah similarly fell into it. ‘It was never a plan because I’m actually quite shy but like Kara I kept on getting work and we thought we would both give it a go.’
It hasn’t always been easy. ‘I think our parents do wish we had stable jobs,’ laughs Hannah. Her sister adds: ‘Jobs that are less like rollercoasters. There’s never a dull moment but the down side is you don’t know when you’re going to be working next and that can be quite daunting.’
Kara, who lives alone in north London, was actually considering giving up when she was offered the chance to take part in Strictly; she took it knowing it could either be the kiss of death for her acting career or propel her to a whole new level.
‘I did it for the money,’ she shrugs. ‘And then it turned into this special experience. I’d almost given up acting at the time because I was struggling to get work, although my agent tells me I must stop telling people how desperate I was because it makes me sound like a loser. I was worried about going down the reality show route, but in hindsight it worked.’
Hannah beams at her sister, ‘That’s the amazing thing about you; you can turn anything around. You’re special like that.’ Kara laughs, ‘It’s a family joke that I do things that aren’t the ideal scenario but somehow I get away with it.’
After Strictly, Kara went into an acclaimed stage version of Pygmalion and has gone on to work on both stage and screen. She says she often goes to her little sister for advice. ‘Hannah knows what’s right and wrong for her, while I always waver,’ she says. ‘Sometimes Hannah will tell me not to do something and I’ll do it anyway – it might not go well, whoops-a-daisy! – but somehow I get back on track.’
Both have new film projects underway as they wait to see whether Mr Selfridge will be recommissioned for a fourth series. ‘So far we’re both making a career out of this,’ says Kara with a surprised smile on her face. ‘But you never know how long it will last,’ says Hannah. They grin at each other: ‘But if we had to do something else, we’d both have to do the same thing,’ says Kara. ‘Yes, the same thing,’ laughs her sister.
The new series of Mr Selfridge starts later this month.

Actress Raffey Cassidy becomes youngest ever to make influential UK Stars of Tomorrow list

Is this little girl Britain's next big film star? Actress Raffey Cassidy becomes youngest ever to make influential UK Stars of Tomorrow list

|
Raffey Cassidy
Watch this face: Star actress in the making, 11-year-old Raffey Cassidy

The closest most girls her age get to Hollywood is by sticking a poster of their favourite actor on their bedroom wall.
But at the tender age of 11, Raffey Cassidy not only mixes with the showbusiness elite - she has already been tipped for greatness herself.
The British actress has become the youngest child star ever to be included on an influential list of rising UK talents that previously picked the young Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Pattinson as names to watch.
Although she is still relatively unknown to UK cinema audiences, Miss Cassidy has already acted alongside Joan Collins and has just flown to Vancouver in Canada to film Disney sci-fi movie Tomorrowland alongside American star George Clooney.
And industry experts at respected film magazine Screen International have predicted she will soon become a household name.
The youngster from Worsley, near Manchester, has been included alongside 16 other young actors in their list of the UK Stars Of Tomorrow. Until now, Screen International had never listed an actor under the age of 13.
Its editor Wendy Mitchell spotted Miss Cassidy last autumn on the set of her latest film, Molly Moon: The Incredible Hypnotist, which is currently in production. She stars alongside Miss Collins, 80, and Celia Imrie, 60.
Miss Mitchell said: ‘I had heard that Raffey was extremely talented, and then I had the chance to meet her on the set of Molly Moon. She was extremely professional on the set and you could tell immediately what kind of charisma she has on screen.
‘Also, I was so charmed by her -- she’s a smart, sweet girl who’s down to earth not like some show-off child actors. She’s got the talent and the grounding to go so far.’
Miss Cassidy’s sister Grace, 20, has already appeared on TV in BBC children’s drama Grange Hill.
Her brother Mossie, 15, has appeared in Casualty spin off drama Casualty 1909.

Future blockbuster: Raffey Cassidy is currently filming Tomorrowland with George Clooney and Hugh Laurie
The youngster said her own big break came by accident when she was sitting outside one of his auditions.
She said: ‘My brother went into an audition. I was sitting outside and they said, “We need a little girl, can we see you?”’
She added: ‘It’s really good when you’re on set – you learn more than you would at school as your tutor is one-to-one, but sometimes you miss going to school. I want to carry on being an actor, but I want to do gymnastics and dancing as well.’
Christopher Rowley, the director of Molly Moon, said he was impressed by Miss Cassidy’s ability to work alongside adult stars.

Previous success: Raffey starring in Mr Selfridge alongside Jeremy Piven
He said: ‘There’s an adult living inside this wonderful little girl. She has such talent and such a love of the craft. I directed her as if she were grown up. She was able to digest her notes and deliver her best on each take.
‘We were filming hard for seven or eight weeks, and she never complained. She fitted her private tuition around her filming commitments.
‘The adults were all surprised at her quality. They really fed off her, and she wasn’t overawed at all. She and Joan got on great. Joan is normally quite self-contained, but she really opened up with Raffey.
‘She has a very strong, nurturing and supportive family which really helps. Raffey can do anything she wants. If she chooses to be a star, she will be a star. She can do serious acting and comedy. She does a brilliant trash Southern accent, which is remarkable for a 12-year-old, and she can do a great imitation of Beyonce.’
DAN STEVENS as Matthew Crawley and MICHELLE DOCKERY as Lady Mary
Carey Mulligan in film: The Great Gatsby (2013)
Talent spotted: Dan Stevens from Downton Abbey, left, and Carey Mulligan who has starred in blockbusters including The Great Gatsby, right, were both tipped for great things on the same list
The annual Screen International list first tipped Sherlock Holmes star Cumberbatch for stardom in 2004. Then aged 28, he was about to make a late breakthrough playing physicist Stephen Hawking in an acclaimed BBC biopic.
The following year, it spotted Robert Pattinson, three years before he became an international star in the Twilight franchise.
In 2007, it predicted Matt Smith would become a star. Three years later, he was cast as Dr Who.
In 2008, a 26-year-old Michelle Dockery and 23-year-old Carey Mulligan made the list.
Five years later, they are both household names – one for acting in Downton Abbey, the other for a string of blockbuster films including Shame and The Great Gatsby.
Dan Stevens made the list in 2006 and also went on to secure a leading role in Downton Abbey.

Zoe Tapper: Sex and the shop-floor showgirl

Zoe Tapper: Sex and the shop-floor showgirl

Zoë Tapper lifts the lid on her starring role in ITV’s glitzy new period drama Mr Selfridge – about the man who put the thrill into shopping
ZOE IMAGE.jpg
While other actresses might kick up a fuss at the slightly kitsch play on their name, Zoë Tapper is
tap-dancing for our photographer with the poise of a professional hoofer. And why worry? After all, our styling idea, she says, is in keeping with her latest role as the singing, dancing Gaiety Girl Ellen Love in ITV’s Mr Selfridge. This glitzy, ten-part period drama tracks the origins of our shopping obsession right back to the American Harry Selfridge, founder of the iconic Oxford Street store.
The drama is set to be the TV event of the autumn. It is scripted by Andrew Davies, who based the story on Lindy Woodhead’s book Shopping, Seduction & Mr Selfridge, and has breathtaking sets. (A  large carpet warehouse in Neasden, Northwest London, has been converted into a circa 1909 Selfridges shop floor.) The impressive cast is led by Jeremy Piven – Golden Globe- and Emmy-winning star of US series Entourage – as Mr Selfridge. Zoë’s role as his beautiful but tortured mistress will be unmissable.
In coming months, Zoë, 30, whose CV already includes starring roles in the TV dramas Survivors, Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky and Affinity (another Andrew Davies project), will be popping up all over the place. She’s also in two British movies: the cop thriller Blood and the romcom Cheerful Weather for the Wedding with Felicity Jones and Downton’s Elizabeth McGovern.
Still, work these days must be fitted in around family life. She is married to actor Oliver Dimsdale and they have a 17-month-old daughter, Ava. Here Zoë tells us why the happy collision of motherhood and the role of a lifetime could not have been more perfectly choreographed…

I was determined to get the role of Ellen. The morning of the audition I travelled into town in
a faux-fur coat, a bright red dress, fake diamond earrings and siren red lips. I got some funny looks but I didn’t care because I felt very Ellen Love-ish. And I got the part, so it was worth it.

You could easily hate Ellen. She’s a potential marriage wrecker. But I had so much sympathy
for her. Harry lusts after her. He sets her up in an apartment and makes her the face of Selfridges. But once he owns her she’s like a trinket that’s lost its lustre. He discards her and she spirals out of control.

Ellen has so much vulnerability. She reminds me of Marilyn Monroe or Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She’s a social butterfly, blowing kisses to the crowds, but she has gossamer wings.

Harry Selfridge wanted to make shopping as thrilling as sex. He came up with concepts such as ‘The customer is always right’ and ‘Try before you buy’. He believed products should be displayed, not hidden under counters. In a way, his ideas went hand in hand with the suffragette movement. He made shopping respectable and liberated women in the process. He also built Selfridges in a rundown part of London, where others followed. So the fact that the West End is now a shopping mecca is largely down to him.

The beauty of a period drama is that the clothes are so different to what women wear now. When you put them on you immediately feel different. You move differently too. You can’t slouch in a corset or in one of the big hats that Ellen wears.

ZOE3.jpg
'I've wanted to act since I was 12'
The cocaine-snorting scenes were a hoot. Andrew Davies always likes to inject a bit of naughtiness to give his scripts a modern feel. Opium was possibly more the drug of choice in those days, but cocaine is Ellen’s poison. Before putting it up my nose, I made the props department tell me what was in it – mostly flour and lactose powder. I made them take a bit themselves, though – just to be on the safe side.
‘You could easily hate Ellen. She’s a social butterfly, but I had so much sympathy for her’
Andrew Davies understands that human emotions are universal. No matter what the period, people still fall in love, they get angry, things get messy in relationships. He doesn’t say, ‘Well, here’s your stereotypical corset-wearing heroine.’ He says, ‘Here are some real people who just happen to be living in 1909 rather than 2012.’

Actresses have to be up for anything. In Mr Selfridge I do a dance number in pink pyjamas while hurling teddy bears into the audience from the stage of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. There’s also a scene where Ellen poses as the face of Selfridges, on the wing of Blériot’s historic, Channel-crossing plane. [They managed to get a replica inside the Neasden set, just as Harry had managed to get the real thing into the store in 1909.] She’s draped in scarves like Isadora Duncan. It was fun but, then, I think I got forgotten. I was shouting, ‘Yoo-hoo, I’m still up here. Don’t lock up and go home. I do have a life to get back to!’

Working with Jeremy Piven has caused hysteria among my male friends. Any of them who saw him as Ari Gold in Entourage have a massive crush on him. I hadn’t seen the show myself, so it had to be explained to me that Ari was a charismatic, swaggering celebrity agent who was a total rottweiler where his clients were concerned. A god among men! My brother Jonathan, who normally isn’t impressed by my co-stars, said, ‘Zoë, you need to become best friends with him, so I can become best friends with him too.’

Acting is in my DNA. The gene skipped my parents’ generation (my mum Yvonne was a teacher, my dad Robin was a wine buyer) but my great-grandfather ran a touring theatre company and my great aunt Sybil was a dancer with George Formby. I dug up wonderful pictures of her and her chorus-line friends before playing Ellen Love.

I’ve wanted to act since I was 12. A neighbour asked me to play a fairy in a local production of
A Midsummer Night’s Dream and I was hooked. At 18, I was given a place to study English at university. It probably would have been great, but I knew in my heart that acting was the thing. I told
my mum, ‘I want to go to drama school instead.’ She said, ‘Then do it. If you have a plan A, don’t go for plan B because it will never make you happy.’ It was the best advice I ever got.

'I lost the baby weight quite quickly.  But it’s annoying when women say, "Oh, I’m lucky. I’m just naturally skinny."’

I’ve only ever known my dad to cry twice. And one of the times was when I rang him to say I’d been accepted at Central School of Speech & Drama. He knew it meant so much to me, so it meant so much to him. He is an amazing family man.

I’ve found another good man in Ollie. He has such a lovely relationship with Ava. When I see them together I think, ‘All men should have a daughter.’

I knew early on that Ollie was The One. He was different to all the other guys I’d ever known. Mind you, when we met at a friend’s party he didn’t ask for my phone number immediately, which I’ve made him regret ever since! But once he asked me out, we did fall in love incredibly quickly.

My mum knew, too. Ollie and I hadn’t been going out long when I introduced him to my parents over
a restaurant dinner. As they were leaving, my mum looked at us and said, ‘Look after each other, for ever.’ I was like, ‘Mum! That’s a bit full-on!’ But looking back, of course she knew.

Ollie and I both come from strong unions. My parents have been married for 40 years and
his even longer. So marriage seemed like the right thing for us too. People roll their eyes and say, ‘Oh, two actors in one marriage.’ But for us it works. Who else
can understand your life better than another actor?

We always knew we wanted children. Having Ava means we’re not just connected by law but by blood. It’s such a strong feeling. I see her little eyebrows – two little drawbridges – just like Ollie’s. It’s incredible.

I’ve grown as an actress too. I feel things so much more keenly and can instantly tap into my emotions. In fact, I’m always teetering on the edge of tears. The other day I was driving with Ava in the rain. She started pointing and saying, ‘Muma! Muma!’ I worked out that she was excited by the windscreen wipers. You start to see the wonder in everything again.

Mums are sometimes their own worst enemies. I try not to buy into the whole, ‘My baby was walking at nine months’ competitive thing. Why don’t we all just give each other a break?

I lost the baby weight quite quickly.  But it’s annoying when women say, ‘Oh, I’m lucky. I’m just naturally skinny.’ In my case, I walked everywhere with the buggy after Ava was born and ate sensibly. I thought I might go to the gym, but it never happened. Now, I do a bit of yoga or pilates at home while Ava sleeps.

Zoe with her husband, the actor Oliver Dimsdale

Leaving Ava to return to work was so hard. My first job back, when she was a year old, was the movie Blood. We were filming in Liverpool and I sobbed all the way there on the train.

I wouldn’t be ashamed to show my post-baby body on screen. Women’s bodies change – mine has – and we should celebrate it. I’ve always admired Kate Winslet. She has a lovely body, but it’s not a perfect Hollywood size zero. It’s the body of a woman who’s had children.

As an actress, though, I’m careful about nudity. There’s a danger in our industry for women to feel pressurised to take their clothes off. I’ve certainly done it, but only, I hope, where the script and the character required it. In Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky I took off my clothes because I was playing a prostitute. What else would you expect? But I can’t bear it when you’re looking at breasts on screen for no particular reason. At this stage, I think I know the difference.

Working on the drama made me yearn to shop. I don’t have any desire to schlep down Oxford Street, but being surrounded every day on set by the kind of beautiful objects that would have been sold in the store in those days did make me feel I should reacquaint myself with Selfridges today. Maybe I could have an Ellen Love moment on the shop floor!

I was lucky enough to work with Lauren Bacall. It was in the movie These Foolish Things in 2006, when I was starting out. I was playing a stage wannabe and Lauren was a grande dame. She had to say to me, ‘I’d give anything to be where you are now.’ And I said, ‘Where’s that?’ She said, ‘At the beginning.’ After the shot she turned around and said, ‘It’s true. I would give anything!’ I’ll never forget it. To be young and to be a working actress with everything before you is a privilege.
Mr Selfridge is on ITV1, Sundays at 9pm, with catch-up available on ITVPlayer

Listening to I love oldies like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra.
  • Reading Caitlin Moran’s How to Be a Woman. I loved her frankness, the fact that she’s not afraid to stand up and call herself a feminist.
  • Style icons 1940s actresses such as Lana Turner, Ava Gardner and Lauren Bacall. They encapsulated both strength and femininity.

Alexandra Burke has been pictured slipping into the hotel of Mr Selfridge star and notorious Hollywood womaniser Jeremy Piven after an evening out partying.
The 24-year-old X Factor winner, who has a history of being unlucky in love, is thought to have accompanied the US actor to designer Tom Ford's party last week but when spotted by onlookers, ever chivalrous Jeremy reportedly jumped out of their shared cab.
But it seems their ruse to possibly hide their new romance was shattered after both were spotted going back to the plush Corinthia Hotel, Alexandra appearing soon after Jeremy was seen waiting in the hotel lobby.

Katherine Kelly shines in new ITV drama about the man who put the sex into shopping…Mr Selfridge

From Corrie ex-con to upper-class lady: Katherine Kelly shines in new ITV drama about the man who put the sex into shopping…Mr Selfridge

|
She’s best known for playing the cigarette-smoking, trouble-making Becky McDonald who enjoyed a drunken rampage or two on the cobbles of Coronation Street.
But Katherine Kelly has proved there’s much more to her repertoire than coarse Miss McDonald as she made her debut in new ITV prime-time drama Mr Selfridge.
And it’s a remarkably different role –  she plays socialite Lady Mae Loxley in the show that the TV  channel hope will be as popular as Downton Abbey, which aired in the same slot.

The series, which is based on Lindy Woodhead’s book Shopping, Seduction and Mr Selfridge, is created by multi award winning writer Andrew Davies, who also penned the likes of Pride and Prejudice and Bleak House.
It stars American actor Jeremy Piven, who is known for his role in US show Entourage, as Mr Selfridge - the man who brought sex appeal to shopping.
Set in London in 1909 it begins with the slightly over-acted Mr Selfridge making a grand speech before discovering his investors have withdrew (he goes on to make a fair few speeches).

Instead of panicking the American goes into overdrive, causing a few raised eye-brows from his English counterparts and starts to spend, spend, spend.
He picks a glamorous showgirl Ellen Love, played by Zoe Tapper, to be the ‘essence’ (basically the face)  of the store, while his poor wife sits at home lamenting how much he is working.
Meanwhile he helps out an ordinary shop girl, Agnes Towler, played by Aisling Loftus’s, giving her a managerial job in the store.
So far, so good: The reaction to the show has so far been fairly positive however it has been suggested that there is not enough suspense

Agnes clearly has an interesting back story – her troubled brother briefly features- but what that is will surely be drawn out over the series.
While the entire female cast is particularly strong, it is Rada-trained and former Royal Shakespeare Company actress Katherine who stands out playing the ‘saviour’ of the store.
Mr Selfridge, although it is pretty to look at and appeals to the shopaholics amongst us, lacks any real suspense – we all know he succeeds and has a hugely popular shop.

As Charlie Brooker sarcastically tweeted: ‘I can't wait to see if Mr. Selfridge will ever open his shop.’
In general the reaction to the show on Twitter was positive, with a lot of users saying it made them want to go on a shopping spree to Selfridges.
A number of celebrities also enjoyed the show, Chris Moyles tweeted: ‘Mr. Selfridge is BRILLIANT.’
Made In Chelsea’s Francesca Hull agreed: ‘Loving Mr Selfridge, very good performance from Mr Piven! X x’
