Keira Knightley on why she won't sacrifice her career to have children - Vogue

'Would I want to be a stay-at-home mother? No': Keira Knightley on why she won't sacrifice her career to have children

She might be engaged to be married, but there's no chance of Keira Knightley giving up her career to concentrate on having a family.
The 27-year-old actress, who is set to wed her Klaxons rocker beau James Righton, told Vogue magazine she wouldn't want to be a stay-at-home mother, but would fight for her right to do so.
Keira made the admission as she posed up for a stunning shoot in the publication, to promote her role as the title character in the new movie adaptation of Anna Karenina.

Referring to the debate of whether a career comes ahead of motherhood, Keira said: 'I’m glad that the subject is coming up again. I remember doing interviews, and people would ask, as if it was a joke, "So you mean you are a feminist?" As though feminism couldn’t be discussed unless we were making fun of it.
'I don’t want to deny my femininity. But would I want to be a stay-at-home mother? No. On the other hand, you should be allowed to do that, as should men, without being sneered at.'
Keira also told Vogue that it took time for her to come to terms with her fame after starring in box office hits such as Bend It Like Beckham and the Pirates Of The Caribbean series.
Choice: Keira says it not about making a right or a wrong choice, it's all about having the freedom to choose what type of mother you will be

The Atonement star, who made her movie debut in thriller Innocent Lies at the tender age of 10, said: 'I literally had no life outside of acting, and I just wanted to go off and not be 'on' all the time, not be photographed, not...'
She continued: 'I once went to the Glastonbury music festival and was completely surrounded by packs of paparazzi the entire time, so I ended up sitting in a trailer, unable to go out.'
Keira, who stars in the new Anna Karenina film alongside heartthrob Jude Law, also opened up about her movie choices, revealing that she likes to take on role that have a bit of 'bite'.
She said to the magazine: 'I'm not really interested in the kinds of women who just take off their clothes or have a sex scene and then say something cool.'
The actress said of her latest Anna Karenina character: 'She is both a villain and a heroine. She can be incredibly vain and manipulative.
'She is somebody who breaks her own moral code, and yet the shame and disgust she lives with because of that make her fascinating.'
The October issue of Vogue goes on sale on September 25.
