Is it the end for Downton Abbey? The fifth series of the popular ITV drama may be the last after cast members are 'keen to go out on a high'
Fans of popular ITV drama, Downton Abbey, are already looking forward to the show's fifth series next year, but they may be disappointed to hear it may be the last.
Cast members are said to be 'keen to go out on a high' and writer Julian Fellowes is turning his attention towards a US version of the show.
A source told the Sunday Express: 'They [ITV] are talking about recommissioning, definitely for a fifth, but some of the senior cast members want to call it a day at five.'
Is it the end? Fans of Downton's Lord Grantham, played by Hugh Bonneville will be disappointed to know that the fifth series of the drama may be the last
They added: 'The plotline involving Hugh Bonneville going to America [last week] was conceived so that the actor could have time off to shoot a film in the States.
'Some of the plots during the [current] series haven't run that coherently because Fellowes has been writing his new American thing at the same time, jumping from one to the other. It hasn't had his full attention.'
Julian Fellowes's American series for NBC is about the Vanderbilt family in New York and is set in the 1880s and it has already been called 'The American Downton.'
Big drama: Lady Rose will tell her family that she intends to marry jazz singer Jack Ross on Sunday night's episode
The fourth series of the drama ends on Sunday night when Lady Rose will tell her family she wants to marry jazz singer, Jack Ross.
Lady Rose – the Countess of Grantham’s great-niece - has already left Lady Mary open-mouthed after she shared a secret kiss with the singer, who had performed at Lord Grantham’s birthday party.
Romance: Lady Rose and Jack Ross share a daring kiss in a row boat
And viewers also saw the pair enjoy an idyllic river boat ride and kiss in public.
In a touching scene Jack is pictured wearing a dapper striped grey suit as he rows Lady Rose, who is serene in a white hat and blue bow-patterned dress.
Lady Rose reclines on green and pink cushions before leaning close to Jack who caresses her neck before they passionately lock lips.
Daring: Lady Rose has shown that she is one of the most spirited residents at Downton with her new romance
Tender: The jazz musician and Lady Rose share a special moment as they enjoy a row together
The pair’s budding relationship shocked many residents of Downton, both above and below the stairs.
Musician Jack drew curious stares as the first black face to appear on the show, with Mr Carson asking: ‘Have you never thought of visiting Africa?’
‘And why should I go to Africa, Mr Carson ? I’m no more African than you are,’ Jack counters, in response to the butler’s ignorance.
Elegance: The pair's smart outfits and hats reflected the styles of the era
Idyllic: The pair enjoy some alone-time with a romantic boat outing
Intrigue: There are surprises set in store as Lady Rose enjoys an illicit romance
Trouble? Tom Branson (Allen Leech) is set to be reunited with scheming maid Edna Braithwaite (MyAnna Buring)
Rose also drew disapproval and concern from her family when she and the singer danced together, with Tom interrupting their waltz to ‘rescue’ her.
The character of Jack Ross is based on the real-life twenties cabaret star Leslie 'Hutch’ Hutchinson.
He famously enjoyed a passionate affair with socialite Edwina Mountbatten in an age when black men were not usually allowed to be seen with white women.
The next episode of Downton Abbey airs on Sunday 10 November at 9pm.
