'Absolutely thrilled': Emma Thompson, Judi Dench and Kate Winslet lead the way as Brits dominate Golden Globe nominations
It might be a primarily American award ceremony, but the Golden Globe nominations have been dominated by strong, British thespians.
Three British leading ladies have been nominated to the Best Actress in a motion picture award; Kate Winslet for her role in Labor Day, Emma Thompson for her part in Saving Mr. Banks and Judi Dench for her performance in Philomena.
Winslet said she was 'extremely surprised and absolutely thrilled' to be nominated.
But it’s not just the girls leading the way, Mandela star Idris Elba, the cast of Downton Abbey and Coldplay have all been nominated for awards.

A winning trio: Emma Thompson, Judi Dench and Kate Winslet have all been nominated for Best Actress
The ceremony is set to take place early next year, and looks to be a star-studded event.
British actors Chiwetel Ejiofor and Idris Elba have been nominated in the Best Actor category for their roles in 12 Years A Slave and Long Walk To Freedom.
Ejiofor said: 'It is such a huge honour to be nominated for two Golden Globes and I would like to thank the members of the HFPA for this incredible recognition.
What a program: Downton Abbey has been nominated for an award at the Golden Globe nominations 2013
'The response to 12 Years A Slave and Dancing On The Edge from the public and media alike has been overwhelming and I am so very grateful. To have been a part of these amazing projects was a gift in itself, that the HFPA have responded in this way, truly means so much.'
British director Steve McQueen will be celebrating his nomination for Best Director for the stirring movie 12 Years A Slave, as will London-born actress Sally Hawkins who’s been nominated for her kooky representation of Ginger in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.
And Sally will be hoping to follow her winning streak with another award next year, after winning Best Actress for her role in Happy Go Lucky in 2009.
Nominated: British actors Chiwetel Ejiofor and Idris Elba have both been nominated for the Best Actor award

The aforementioned Emma Thompson, Judi Dench and Kate Winslet are all going up against each other, as well as Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, for the Best Actress title.
It’s a bittersweet moment for Steve Coogan who, alongside Jeff Pope, has been nominated in the Best Screenplay category for Philomena – a movie based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith.
But the Alpha Papa actor was notably not nominated in the Best Actor category for his role in the movie – whereas his co-star Judi Dench has been praised for her performance.
Best of British: Band Coldplay have been nominated for their song Atlas which appeared in the second Hunger Games movie
British band Coldplay and their frontman Chris Martin have been praised for their Original Song Altas which appeared in the Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
And finally, heavily praised British drama Downton Abbey has been nominated once more for Best Television Drama Series but is up against American heavy-weights Breaking Bad, The Good Wife, House of Cards and Masters of Sex.
Bittersweet: Steve Coogan has been nominated in the Best Screenplay category for Philomena but not Best Actor
