Sherlock and Watson reunited: The detective and his side-kick back together in New Year's Day episode
Sherlock fever is hitting a new high as a picture has been revealed showing the detective and his trustee side-kick Watson almost back together again.
Looking at Watson through the glass of a coffee shop window, this is the closest Sherlock, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, has been to his former assistant since audiences saw him plummet to his ‘death’ at the end of the last series.
It would appear that Watson, played by Martin Freeman, still believes his best friend and former partner is dead after jumping off the top of a hospital as he looks glumly at a sole cup of coffee.
The team back together: Sherlock and Watson are reunited in the first episode of the detective TV show set to air on January 1
But in a seven minute trailer released last week, called Many Happy Returns, the audience see Sherlock continuing to solve crimes unbeknownst to a grieving Watson.
The mystery of Sherlock’s jump will be solved during the next three-episode run of the show, which will also explain how Watson, who has now fallen in love with Mary Morstan, handles the news that Holmes has been alive all along.
The first episode of the show is set to air on New Year’s Day, and the excitement around it has reached an all-time high with Sherlock fans, desperate to know the truth about how the detective cheated death.
Not what you thought: Watson believed his best friend and partner died after jumping off the roof of a hospital in the last series
Escaped: The star jumped off the roof of St Bartholomew's Hospital at the end of last series, but did he die?
The January 1 episode picks up from the end of series two, following Sherlock’s apparent suicide after he plummeted to the ground of St Bartholomew's Hospital.
Executive producer of Sherlock, Steven Moffat, said: 'It's been a long time since Sherlock Holmes jumped off that roof. It's time to reveal the truth about what happened between him and the pavement.'
A teaser trailer released in November opened with a shot of Sherlock’s tombstone, leading viewers to believe the worst had happened and he died after the fall.
Not what it seems: Watson watched a DVD Sherlock had recorded before the jump to his 'death', explaining more about the situation
Surprise: The DVD Watson watched showed Sherlock explaining why he was unable to attend his birthday party
But then Sherlock’s recognisable, curly hairstyle pops up and he is seen confidently bounding into a room.
Although the detective’s face is never seen, it’s made obvious that it is him and he is, in fact, alive.
In the last scene from the teaser, Sherlock’s face is finally seen with the character standing on what looks like the building that he allegedly jumped off in the last series.
The trailer ends with the hashtag ‘#SherlockLives’ and dramatically cuts away from the lead character’s face.
Post-jump: The audience see Sherlock with a bleeding head after his jump from the hospital roof
He's back: All is revealed about the jump from the roof and why Sherlock hid from Watson in the next episode
