Hunger Games star Amandla Stenberg, 17, comes out as bisexual in a Snapchat video, as she praises close friend Willow Smith for helping her to embrace her true identity

  • Amandla posted a series of impassioned videos on the Teen Vogue Snapchat account to celebrate being the magazine's latest cover girl
  • The actress said that, as a 'black bisexual woman', she knows how 'deeply bruising' it can be to try and 'fight against your identity'
  • She urged other black women to 'express your joy and your love and your tears, and be big and bold'
The Hunger Games star Amandla Stenberg has come out as bisexual in a series of emotional Snapchat videos.
During a day-long takeover of the Teen Vogue Snapchat account, the 17-year-old actress, who appears on the cover of the magazine's latest issue, explained to fans that she 'identifies as a black bisexual woman', before admitting that it had taken her some time to feel comfortable about openly revealing and embracing her sexuality.
'It's a really, really hard thing to be silenced and it's deeply bruising to fight against your identity and to mold yourselves into shapes that you just shouldn't be in,' she said in the candid clip, which was also posted on her Tumblr page. 'As someone who identifies as a black bisexual woman, I've been through it and it hurts and it's awkward and it's uncomfortable.

The star then went on to pay tribute to women like Beyonce's sister Solange Knowles, who interviewed her for Teen Vogue, singer Willow Smith and Selma director Ava DuVernay, noting that they have helped her to 'realize that there is absolutely nothing to be changed [about my identity]'.
'I realized because of Solange and Ava DuVernay and Willow, and all the black girls watching this right now, that there is absolutely nothing to be changed,' she told the camera. 'We cannot be suppressed, we are meant to express our joy and our love and our tears, and be big and bold and definitely not easy to swallow.
'I definitely believe in the concept of rebellion through self-hood, and rebellion just by embracing your true identity no matter what you are being told. Here I am being myself and it's hard and vulnerable and it's definitely a process, but I'm growing and I'm learning.'
Amandla, who appeared in first installment of The Hunger Games movie series as Rue, the young sidekick to Jennifer Lawrence's character Katniss, finished off the series of clips by calling her fellow women to action, noting that there is still 'a lot of work to do for all women of color'.

'This is just the beginning though...' she said. 'We need more representation in film and in television and we need our voices to be louder in the media.
'And not just women of color, [but] bisexual women, gay women, transgender women, mentally-ill women. I'm sick of all the misogyny and homophobia and transphobia that I see around me and I know you are too!'
Although this is the first time that Amandla has revealed herself to be bisexual, it is certainly not the first time that she has spoken out candidly about race issues, or in support of her fellow black women.
In July last year, the teen accused Kylie Jenner of 'appropriating black culture' after the reality star shared an image of herself with her hair styled into cornrows.

At the time, Amandla aired her frustrations in a comment posted on an Instagram photo of Kylie modeling the hairstyle, writing: 'When u appropriate black features and culture but fail to use ur position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards ur wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter. [sic]'
Kylie, whom is thought to have once dated Amandla's close friend Jaden Smith, son of actor Will, fired back, writing: 'Mad if I don't, Mad if I do…. Go hang w Jaden or something.'
When Amandla was first revealed as the lucky young star who had been chosen to play Rue in the hugely-popular sci-fi movie series, the casting announcement also sparked a shocking race row, with many fans of the books taking to social media to complain about the fact that a 'black actress' had been cast in the role.
'I was pumped about the Hunger Games. Until I learned that a black girl was playing Rue,' one person wrote, while another added: 'Kk call me racist but when I found out Rue was black her death wasn't as sad #ihatemyself'

Hunger Games star Amandla Stenberg, 16, shows off her edgy grey hair at Women In Film event

Hunger Games star Amandla Stenberg, 16, shows off her edgy grey hair at Women In Film event

It has been three years since she stole our hearts as sweet Rue in The Hunger Games, but Amandla Stenberg will soon be making a return to the spotlight in upcoming comedy series Mr. Robinson.
And she was already turning heads on Tuesday while attending the Women In Film 2015 Crystal and Lucy Awards in Century City, California.
The 16-year-old, who made headlines last month when she went to prom with Jaden Smith, showed off her edgy grey hair.

For prom, Amandla dyed her dark brown hair grey and wore it in long braids, before chopping it shorter last week. She took out her braids up to her roots ahead of the event on Tuesday.
The actress wore a sparkly black dress to the ceremony, which featured gold detailing on the collar and back, and teamed it with bronze sandals.
Letting her funky hair be the focus of the look, she kept her make-up simple with a little black eyeliner and some glossy red lipstick.

Amandla joined a host of A-listers at the bash, including Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts and Kristen Stewart.
The rising star took actor Jaden, whose parents are Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, as her date to a high school prom last month, and they posed for photos together which they then shared on Instagram.
While Amandla wore a gold halter-neck cocktail dress, the After Earth star, also 16, sported a white skirt with a long black top over leggings.

After portraying Katniss's ally Rue in the first Hunger Games, Amandla appeared in the TV show Sleepy Hollow and voiced a character in Rio 2.
Her upcoming series Mr. Robinson, which premieres in August, sees Craig Robinson star as a musician who becomes a music teacher at a middle school in a big city.
Amandla also made headlines earlier this year when she released an intelligent and thought-provoking video discussing the issues of cultural appropriation, posing the question: 'What would America be like if we loved black people as much as we love black culture?'

In the clip, titled Don't Cash Crop My Cornrows, the teen says: 'Appropriation occurs when a style leads to racist generalizations or stereotypes where it originated but is deemed as high-fashion, cool or funny when the privileged take it for themselves.
'Hip hop stems from a black struggle, it stems from jazz and blues, styles of music African-Americans created to retain humanity in the face of adversity. On a smaller scale but in a similar vein, braids and cornrows are not merely stylistic. They’re necessary to keep black hair neat.'
Citing stars such as Iggy Azalea, Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry, she adds: 'Pop stars and icons adopted black culture as a way of being edgy and gaining attention.'

Hunger games star Jena Malone dares to bare with just flowers to protect her modesty in new music video

In full bloom! Hunger games star Jena Malone dares to bare with just flowers to protect her modesty in new music video

Jena Malone sure knows how to play the publicity game.
The 29-year-old star ensured her unknown indie band was the talk of the town on Friday after releasing a very racy video.
As if having a Hollywood actress as a front woman wasn't enough to get the band, The Shoe, noticed, in the video for single Dead Rabbit Hopes the star wears almost nothing through the clip.

Through the almost five minute long video, The Hunger Games star prances, poses and rolls around were nothing but flowers.
The video seems to have taken its influence from the famous scene from American Beauty which features Mena Suvari lying on a bed naked but covered in roses.
In Jena's reincarnation of the scene, she lies on the floor nude with ripped up daises and other petals around her with a bunch of pink lilies covering her private parts and just a few petals stuck to her

Obviously completely comfortable with her naked form, the star - who plays Johanna Mason in the Hunger Games series - stares directly at the camera flinging her arms behind her head and not attempting to hide her body in any way.
In another scene, the Sucker Punch actress drapes herself across a white piano with a bunch of blue hydrangeas once again ensuring her modesty.
In a third scene the star changes her outfit - or lack of one - so that she appears completely naked but glistening like a creature not from this world.

For this section of the clip, the pretty blonde wears a pair of translucent leggings with tiny white petals on her chest.
Covered in glistening body paint, the star spins and twirls as her haunting track plays.
While obviously not the subtlest of imagery, the song and the video is, of course, all about accepting your body as it is.
On the band's Facebook The Shoe explained: 'Women! Ladies, Beauties of your teen years. Little hearts that are only beginning to bud. If you do not value your body as YOUR OWN WORK OF ART, no one ever will.'

The Shoe - which comprises of Jena and band mate Lem Jay Ignacio - are releasing their first full-length album, I'm Okay, on June 3.
Jenna is also currently very busy filming the second part of the final Hunger Games installment Mockingjay Part 2.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will hit theaters on November 21 this year and Part 2 will be in theaters on November 20 2015.
