Joséphine Jobert: ‘I have Death in Paradise fans who are obsessed with my shorts. I don’t know why!’

Death in Paradise actress Joséphine Jobert lifts the lid on what happens when the latest case takes a deeply personal turn for DS Florence Cassell - and reveals what she likes and dislikes about London...
DS Florence Cassell is rocked when an old school friend is murdered in Thursday’s Death in Paradise…
DS Cassell normally doesn’t let her personal life get in the way of her job as a police officer. She’s calm, professional, dedicated to her work and appears immune to the bumblings of DI Humphrey Goodman’s and his haphazard love life.
But she’s rocked when a body found at the bottom of a cliff turns out to be her old school friend Esther Monroe and the shock sends her into a tailspin! Here, French actress Joséphine Jobert reveals all…
What happens when Florence and Humphrey discover the body?
“They find this girl who has been murdered and it turns out Florence went to school with her and was friends with her when she was a kid. Florence is more involved emotionally in the whole murder inquiry and it’s hard for her to stay professional and not show too much emotion. She spends nights at the police station searching looking through case files to find the reason why Esther was murdered.”

Can Florence and Humphrey (Kris Marshall) work out why Esther was murdered – and who killed her?
Do we see a different side to Florence?
“Yes. It was different for me to be more emotional and show a different part of her. We don’t know much about her family, but we find out more about her childhood and her friends. We see that she’s not just a police officer, she’s a real person with real feelings.”

Death in Paradise Florence
Florence works day and night to find out who murdered her friend…
How is she getting on with Humphrey this series?
“She has a good friendship with him! He’s got a new girlfriend and she’s really happy about that – she encourages him and tells him to go for it!”
You’ve filmed in London as well as Guadaloupe this time, how did you find it?
“I love London – just walking around the city, shopping in Oxford Street or Regent Street, and the parks. It’s very different, though. There’s the weather, of course, but it’s also very noisy. In Guadaloupe we have church bells and cockerels, but here it’s the planes and cars!”

Does Florence struggle with the English cuisine?
“Not just Florence, but me! I got to have porridge in the hotel and it was okay, but I also tried pork scratchings and I’m not a fan. They’re disgusting!”
Do you get recognised now?
“In Paris I get recognised every day because I’ve done a lot of shows in France, but the first time I got recognised for this show was two years ago in Iceland and I was on top of a huge waterfall. I was freezing and there was a group of students and one of them said, ‘Oh it’s the girl from Death in Paradise!’ It was very weird. On Twitter, I also seem to have fans who are obsessed with my shorts – I don’t know why!”
How do you find learning your lines in English?
“It takes longer to learn them because I have to think about the accent, the rhythm and the pronunciation. Even after three years I still struggle with some words!”
Death in Paradise continues Thursdays at 9pm on BBC1.

Psychological thriller The Ice Cream Girls starts Friday 19th April ITV1

The Ice Cream Girls

Deadly secrets from the past come to light in this psychological thriller...
In 1995, two teenage girls are put on trial for the murder of a teacher who was lover to them both. Seventeen years later, Poppy (Jodhi May) leaves prison vowing to clear her name, while Serena (Lorraine Burroughs), who was cleared, now has a lovely husband and daughter who know nothing about her past. On the face of it, it seems the wrong girl was convicted, but the clever interplay of past and present in this three-part thriller, based on the novel by Dorothy Koomson, suggests some intriguing twists to come. Martin Compston, who plays abusive teacher Marcus, exudes just the right combination of seductiveness and scary control freakery, and Holli Dempsey and Georgina Campbell are terrific as the younger Poppy and Serena. Suspenseful stuff – but be warned, it's very dark indeed.

Sinbad's Sophie on playing a killer queen -Whats On TV

Sinbad's Sophie on playing a killer queen...

Sinbad's Sophie on playing a killer queen...
Sophie Okonedo revels in her guest appearance in Sinbad as a cannibal queen with murderous intentions...

How would you describe Razia, the terrifying warrior queen who captures Sinbad and his friends?
"I'd say my character is a cross between Medusa and Eartha Kitt - or at least, that's who I was channelling! Razia is queen of the water thieves and they all worship her."

Was it fun being worshipped?
"I had so much fun being queen! The first day of filming was the most memorable for me. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with the character. When I walked onto the extraordinary set to do my first scene all the water thieves bowed down and started worshipping me - and we hadn't even started filming! It took me by surprise and I got into the role immediately!"

So you didn't have to prepare much for the role, then?
"The wonderful Make-Up and Costume Departments gave me a lot of her, and I just played around in front of the camera and had fun with it. It's great playing a baddie!"

Did working in Malta add to your enjoyment?
"Filming in Malta was lovely. The people were very warm - as was the weather! After the dreary weather in London it was nice to go somewhere with such a beautiful sky and light. But as I was mostly filming at night, I slept all day so didn't get a to see much of Malta."

Was it easy to get along with the rest of the cast?
"The main cast had already been filming for some time before I arrived in Malta and I have to say they were extraordinary. Such a talented bunch and really committed to the project - it was a privilege to work with them. They had also really bonded and were very supportive of each other. It felt like a little family - and they let me join them for a week."

What do you think is the enduring quality of fairy tales and myths?
"I think myths and fairy tails are necessary to help us understand and interpret the darker, stickier aspects of our nature. Sometimes it is easier to understand less digestible parts of ourselves through fairy tales and myths - they bring colour, meaning, creativity and ultimately understanding."

Catch Sophie Okonedo in Sinbad on Sunday July 15 at 7pm on BBC1.
