'It's been a tough year': Nicole Scherzinger says heartbreaking split from Lewis Hamilton led to X Factor tears

She let her emotions get the better of her on more than occasion since returning to The X Factor.
But while she’s prone to wearing her heart on her sleeve, Nicole Scherzinger admits her tears over recent weeks were prompted by a difficult split from long-term boyfriend Lewis Hamilton.
The couple brought their stop-start relationship to a permanent end in July – shortly before the former Pussycat Doll toured the UK with Gary Barlow, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh as they selected promising hopefuls during X Factor live auditions.

Those hopefuls included supermarket worker Abi Alton, whose self-written track Jigsaw was about ‘a boy who broke my heart,’ and boy-band Next of Kin, who sailed through to Boot Camp with another original track, Can’t Find Me.
Both auditions reduced Nicole to tears.
‘It’s been a tough year,’ she said. ‘On the personal side it has been a hard year for me. I am not a robot and I wear my heart on my sleeve. At the end of the day I want to be a professional and make it about the contestants and not about me.

‘But music is a part of my life and music touches me, so I think I’ve been a bit more emotional through the audition process this year because I was obviously going through some stuff internally.’
Those emotions also shone through at Boot Camp, where the singer lost her cool with the girls following a string of mediocre performances.
‘That last performance p***ed me off,’ she snapped after storming backstage at Wembley. ‘Please don’t waste my time, because I care too much.

'You need to know what you’re singing about and focus on that song, singing it with your heart, or else I will not care and you will not get through today. Tough love, okay. Kick some butt and grow some b**ls.’
Nicole will be seen selecting her final three at pre-recorded judges houses in Antigua on Sunday evening – and she admits she said a prayer before making her decision.

'Before I pick my finalists,, I pray,’ she said. ‘I realise I have these people’s careers and hearts in my hands.’
One of the six she has to choose from is 17-year-old Hannah Barratt – who impressed the judge with a rousing performance of Read All About It by Emeli Sande.
‘She’s just a modern-day songbird,’ she said. ‘She’s got so much heart and soul. Hannah’s had life experience and she’s an old soul for such a young girl.’
