First picture of Doctor Who star Jenna Coleman as ITV's young Queen Victoria

Thought your time-travelling was all in the past, Jenna? First picture of Doctor Who star as ITV's young Queen Victoria

  • Jenna Coleman once played a Victorian barmaid during Doctor Who stint
  • Transported back to 19th Century for latest role – as Queen Victoria herself
  • Pictures show Miss Coleman playing the monarch in eight-part ITV drama
Jenna Coleman knows a thing or two about time-travelling, once playing a Victorian barmaid during her stint as Doctor Who’s assistant.
So it seems apt that the actress should be transported back to the 19th Century for her latest role – this time as Queen Victoria herself.
Our exclusive pictures show Miss Coleman, 30, playing the monarch in a lavish eight-part ITV drama, Victoria, which charts the young Queen’s life and loves.

While Victoria is fixed in the national memory as the widow in black who mourned her beloved Prince Albert for decades, the new drama will portray her as a headstrong woman who casts a spell over men who cross her path.
Written by novelist Daisy Goodwin, it follows the Queen from her accession to the throne at 18 through to her courtship and marriage to Albert, played by Tom Hughes.
The Queen’s coronation at Westminster Abbey in 1838 is recreated in the first episode.
Coleman, who is flanked by ladies-in-waiting, looks resplendent in a silk gown topped off by a red robe and diamond-studded tiara.

Melbourne schooled the young Queen in the ways of government, and their friendship inevitably led to gossip.
ITV is yet to announce a broadcast date for the series.
