Glee star Melissa Benoist, 26, has been cast as Supergirl for new fall TV series on CBS 

After months of speculation, the star for the new TV series Supergirl has finally been announced.
On Thursday CBS revealed Glee actress Melissa Benoist, 26, had nabbed the part of the crime-fighting DC Comics character.
The show will debut in the fall.

In late 2014 it was heavily speculated that Claire Holt from The Vampire Diaries would land the part.
Supergirl is being executive produced by Greg Berlanti, the man behind Arrow and The Flash. 
According to Deadline, Benoist 'will play a denizen of Krypton who escaped amid its destruction years ago. 
She's not the first Supergirl: Laura Vandervoort played Supergirl in from 2007 to 2011 for the CW's Smallville. Helen Slater played the character for a film in 1984

'Once she arrived to Earth, she hid the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But at 24, she opts to be the hero.'
Supergirl also goes by the name Kara Zor-El. 
The show is also looking to cast her sister Alex who, at 26, sounds like she'll be an influence on Kara.
The Colorado native has also starred in the Oscar-nominated film Whiplash.
The brunette's upcoming films include Danny Collins with Jennifer Garner and Annette Bening, Billy Boy with Greg Germann, and The Longest Ride with Scott Eastwood.

CBS has given a series commitment to Supergirl, a DC Comics character that was first introduced in 1959.
CBS Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler said in early January that she thinks Supergirl will 'fit nicely alongside more mature characters like The Good Wife's Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies), Extant's Molly Woods (Halle Berry), and Madam Secretary's Elizabeth McCord (Téa Leoni),' according to the site.
Laura Vandervoort played Supergirl in from 2007 to 2011 for the CW's Smallville.
Helen Slater played the character for a film in 1984.
Henry Cavill will play Superman in Batman Vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice which comes out March 25, 2016. Ben Affleck plays the part of Batman.
