Emma Watson takes centre stage in monochrome Chanel at The Bling Ring premiere

Nice Bling Rings! Emma Watson wears sparkling ear cuffs as she takes centre stage in monochrome Chanel at premiere

On the opening night of the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday it was all about the cast of The Great Gatsby, with Carey Mulligan et al taking centre stage.
But on Thursday it was Emma Watson's turn to work her magic on proceedings as she lead the glamour at The Bling Ring premiere.
And she did it with style as she sauntered on to the red carpet with a smile and a monochrome Chanel gown.

The 23-year-old oozed grown up glamour in the dress which included a black top half and cut out detailing on the back.
And the sweetheart neckline gave the slender star some curves as she completed her look with black heels and silver jewellery.
Although she kept the rest of her look simple as she wore her brunette locks in a tied up bun with her fringe scraped into a side parting.
She gave her good girl image an edge by adding a touch of bling on her ears in the form of three sparkling cuffs.

The Harry Potter actress appeared in high spirits as she mingled with the stars ready to showcase her film.
Emma posed up next to her co-stars, pretty actresses Katie Chang, Taissa Farmiga and Claire Julien.
The girls all dressed to impress themselves in a series of glamorous floorlength gowns.

Other stars who showed up to catch a glimpse of the film, included Freida Pinto, who yet again scored a fashion thumbs up in a shimmering gold dress with large side split up her left leg.
And it seems after a downpour at the Opening Ceremony on Wednesday night, Emma Watson waved a touch of Harry Potter wizardry to keep the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival dry.
The actress had been feeling nervous earlier about whether rain would fall down on her as she paraded the red carpet for the world premiere of Sofia Coppola's film The Bling Ring in which the 23 year old plays a girl who joins a gang that breaks into the homes of Hollywood stars and waltzes off with their clothes and gems.

Emma, who played Hermione Granger for a decade in the Potter films, didn't steal the clothes she wore to the gala, though she may well have borrowed them.
She wore a stunning cream gown from Chanel and plenty of bling in the shape of rings and earrings by Repossi.
Watson tweeted earlier this month that she was excited about the opportunity to showcase a selection of stunning outfits during her time in Cannes.

And the actress certainly kicked things off in style on Thursday as she arrived for The Bling Ring photocall at the film festival in a stunning Christopher Kane ensemble, hours before the premiere.
The 23-year-old actress flashed a hint of midriff in the matching crop top and above the knee skirt, which featured feather detailing along the hem.

The look is significantly more demure than Emma has been opting for in recent months, with a long length on the skirt and high neck on the top.
The maroon colour of Emma's outfit flattered her English rose complexion, and she added a sophisticated touch to the outfit with a pair of sky-high black suede court shoes.
Emma finished off her look by wearing her brunette hair swept back into a loose bun.

Emma studied the dark side of celebrity culture to play her latest role as a burglar.
The actress who shot to fame in the Harry Potter movies gave what amounted to a studied analysis of how social media drives the celebrity age.
Sofia Coppola's film is based on a real-life Los Angeles gang that broke into the homes of celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.
Emma revealed she watched 'a lot of the Kadashians and Paris Hilton' on tv because she wanted to understand the psychology of her character.
'I needed to understand and emphasise with her, and get the accent down', Emma told a press conference in Cannes.

She said that she also wanted to explore the girl's parenting and environment.
Emma said she felt the gang broke into the homes of celebrities more to party than to steal.
'It wasn't so much about the heist aspect , they wanted to pretend that for two hours they were in Paris Hilton's home. They wanted to party', she observed.
She added that technology is also a big part of what drives celebrity culture and the desire for young people to be like the stars they see in magazines, tabloids and on Twitter and Facebook.
'We're being saturated by images ', she noted.
'And in a sense they become whatever they project onto that image, whatever it is.
'I also think that if you look through OK magazine and tabloids they look like comic strips and it's a narrative our society has become obsessed with,' she said.

At the same time Emma wondered what social media was doing to childhoods.
She explained that young people who use social media become more self aware at a much younger age because of 'all the posturing' they do on social networks.
'They're blissfully unaware their childhoods are being shortened', the actress said.
The Bling Ring was shot in the style of the world it encompasses where the kids who broke into the homes of celebrities would present their bounty on Facebook and other image sharing sites.
Coppola explained that the brains of the kids involved 'weren't fully formed' because they didn't pay much attention to security cameras nor were they concerned about finger prints, they just wanted to score some bling.

The film represents a major step for Emma Watson following the Potter years.
'It's strange for me because Harry Potter seems such a long time ago.
'I'm not trying to run away from it and I'm proud of the work I did in it.'
She said that she's having a 'good time' trying to transform into new roles.
One role is that of a quick change artist.

She wore a short dress for a photocall in the morning and quickly changed into a black dress for the press conference.
She and her stylist were still deciding what she would wear on the red carpet , although it's blue at this particular auditorium, for the gala screening of The Bling Ring.On the make-up front, Emma kept things simple, opting for a slick of mascara and lip gloss as she posed for photographers.
She maintained a strong Cara Delevingne-esque brow, and appeared unconcerned about the gloomy weather as she smiled widely for the waiting photographers.
Earlier, Emma was seen wearing a beige trench coat over her dress as she made her way to the photocall.

THE BLING RING: BAZ BAMIGBOYE'S VERDICT

Emma Watson is a goody no longer.
For ten years Emma played well-behaved girl-wizard Hermione Granger in the phenomenally successful Harry Potter films .
She took a cameo role as a wardrobe girl in My Week With Marilyn, and showed daring in The Perks of Being a Wallflower but in Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring the 23 year-old actress comes into her own and is brilliant as an LA brat who becomes part of a real-life gang that robbed the homes of the rich and famous in Hollywood.
Being a bad girl suits Emma Watson.
Emma portrays Nicki a young woman obsessed with designer labels. Rather than go to a mall and buy her bling she finds it easier to steal it by breaking into the homes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom and Rachel Bilson.
She and her gang are like the 21st century equivalents of Fagin and the Artful Dodger , except that there's no way they'd be seen in filthy clothing.
Designer labels only, thanks very much and diamond rings on their fingers and Louboutins on their toes.
Emma's Nicki is a total Hollywood girl. Not for a moment does the actress betray her Home Counties origins.
At one point her eyes literally pop when she's shown the Aladdin's cave like sparking goodies on display in Hilton's walk-in closets.
It's a fascinating cinematic essay of excess and desire .
The effect of watching Coppola's film is so hypnotic that it may breed a raft a wannabe girls in other major cities going around and doing an 'Emma' and knocking off the homes of the rich and famous.
Coppola's intention is to satirise such behaviour; to mock it and to wonder why such girls (and one boy) feel the need to go out and steal rather than get a Saturday job to earn money to buy the trash glamour goods they desire.
Emma's performance is so clever. At one point her character seeks to justify what she has done and explains how she has changed and what lessons she has learnt.
It's one of the best scenes I've seen in a movie all year and for me it marked the moment Emma Watson became a leading lady in her own right.
There's also good work from Claire Jukien, Israel Broussard , Katie Chang , Georgia Rock, Leslie Mann and Taissa Farmiga.
