Emotional ties with X Factor winner Alexandra Burke
The singer and West End star on growing up with her grandparents and being inspired by Usain Bolt
Here I am with my mum Melissa Bell (former lead singer of Soul II Soul) and my dad David Burke at a Chain of Hope charity gala ball. It took a lot to get them to talk to one another after they separated in 1992, but now they’re good friends again.
I grew up with my mum’s parents, they were my backbone. My nan Ivy May, who died in 2004, taught me to save money and that God comes first. My granddad Ivan, who died in 1992, was my everything. He taught me that no man should treat me wrongly.
I refer to my dogs Alfie, Prince and Teddy as my kids. I bought them from Harrods’s pet department – I went in to buy shoes and came out with a new dog each time. They bring me such joy.
My love for Man U started with a crush on David Beckham. These framed tops, signed by Wayne Rooney, who’s now a good friend, and Edwin van der Sar, were a 21st birthday present from my best friend Lance.
I bid for this framed Usain Bolt Olympic winning shoe in the charity auction when I performed as an ambassador at last year’s WellChild awards. His dedication and determination keeps me inspired. I haven’t had the rosiest career – there have been ups and downs – but I keep going and will never give up.
My teddy bear is my good luck charm. My family gave him to me the week before I won The X Factor. He sat in the corner of the stage when I sang with Beyoncé in the final and when I was filming my debut single ‘Hallelujah’. I still have to pinch myself when I look at this gold Bodyarmour dress, which I wore the night I won the fifth series of The X Factor in 2008, because I never thought I stood a chance of winning. I was just pleased to be seen.
Alexandra’s EP Renegade will be released on 25 March
