It is one of the steamiest sex scenes ever shot for a mainstream movie – so intense that many assumed its stars weren’t acting.
And actress Julie Christie has revived the speculation, coming tantalising close to confirming the rumours about her romp with Donald Sutherland in Don’t Look Now that still persist, 42 years on.
In a new documentary on Nicolas Roeg, Christie, now 75, says the director ‘managed to get the extraordinary thing that happens when you are making love’.
Did they?: Julie Christie reignited speculation over the saucy scene with Donald Sutherland for the 1973 horror film Don't Look Now in a new documentary about the making of the film
Getting steamy: The scene was so intense that many viewers believed the actors weren't acting, which sparked a major censorship row on its release
And with typical British understatement, she says the encounter was ‘absolutely lovely’.
‘I loved the squirming bits and all those things you don’t see,’ she says on a BBC4 Arena programme.
‘It was just flesh squirming and rolling and touching, and God I thought it was absolutely lovely.’
She added that the scene captured the moment that ‘you know you don’t exist, the other person perhaps doesn’t even exist. It’s just bodies that are existing.
'It wasn’t even necessarily sexy, what it was – it reminded you of making love.’
The film sparked a major censorship row on its release in 1973, and Christie’s then boyfriend Warren Beatty reportedly flew to London to demand that the scene be cut.

Keeping it clean: Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland pictured in a different scene from the film that viewers are still debating four decades after its release
In 2011, former movie executive Peter Bart claimed he had watched the filming, and the couple had indeed made love.
That was strongly denied by Sutherland, who said Bart had not been on set that day. The star, 79, also features in the programme with an interview, like Christie’s, that was filmed some years ago but has never been screened before.
In it, he admits they both would have done anything Roeg asked of them.
Neither actor was available for comment last night.
