Good effort: Daily Mail photographer Andy Hooper
The secret behind our stunning image, by Andy Hooper (Chief Sports Photographer)
At one of the many Olympic meetings last year, I asked whether there was going to be an official Team GB photograph.
The answer was 'no' so I thought it would be a great thing for the Daily Mail to step in and photograph the official picture of all 541 athletes.
I thought it would be possible to shoot most of the athletes in one or possibly two sessions at one of the official functions they attend before the Games begin.
However, the only time and place we could shoot was at the kitting-out preparation camp in Loughborough. Everyone has to go through the camp there to get measured and pick up their official kit.
We thought this would be a case of photographing the athletes over two weeks - but it turned into six. Myself, Georgie Gillard and Lucy Ray photographed the athletes individually or in small groups as they passed through the kitting-out process.
The logistics behind this photograph are quite staggering. It became a huge 541-piece jigsaw puzzle. Photographically we needed to standardise the equipment and lighting over the six weeks and, to get the feel of an old school photograph, we had a wooden plinth made five people wide by six high.
The athletes walked in and we had their positions marked out on the plinth where they would stand.
The positioning was the tricky part as we wanted to keep all the sports together even though they might come in over a three-week period as the track-and-field athletes did. We had to be flexible too as swimmer David Carry came in a couple of weeks after his fiancee Keri-Anne Payne and asked to be put next to her in the photograph.
It was a sweet idea as they are getting married shortly after the Games so we shuffled a few people around to make it happen. Our cardboard cut-out plan was reminiscent of a Blue Peter project.
Georgie created a velcro wall chart and each athlete was stuck on to it when they had their picture taken so we could keep a record of who was where.
Captioning and numbering in our grid system was vitally important. Once we had taken the pictures they were sent off to be morphed into one bigger image using computer technology.
We started off with the rowers on the left-hand side of the picture and then the image built from left to right from rowing to cycling and so on. It was our most famous cyclist, Sir Chris Hoy, who presented us with one of the biggest challenges.
I'm loving it: Jessica Ennis behind the scenes of The Big Picture at Loughborough preparation camp
He was so muscly that his jacket wouldn't do up all the way so we had to use some computer trickery on that too. The athletes were really enthusiastic as they saw the picture build and where they were going to be placed in this historic picture.
Some asked for some fun pictures behind the scenes and they all gave off a relaxed and happy air. The Princess Royal, whose daughter, Zara Phillips, is in the photograph courtesy of her place in the equestrian team, visited one day, as did Prime Minister David Cameron.
He turned up and was so impressed that he wanted to be photographed for the picture. So a special copy is making its way to No 10.
My thanks go to Georgie Gillard, Lucy Ray and Joshua and Andy Moger, who I couldn't have done it without… and to Nikon cameras for supplying the D800.
