Downton Abbey is back...and Lady Edith may get to wed her beloved yet married boss Gregson after all 

Downton Abbey is back on out TV screen for its fourth series, and already the Yorkshire country estate has been plunged into turmoil. 
The series begins with the knowledge that Lady Grantham's maid, Miss Sarah O'Brien, has run off to India with Susan MacClare, Marchioness of Flintshire. 
Meanwhile Lady Mary, who lost her husband and co-owner of the estate Matthew Crawley in a car crash last series, has been walking around in a zombie-like state for six months.

And head of the family, the Earl of Grantham is doing everything he can to keep Lady Mary from running the estate.
    Butler, Charles Caron tried to speak to Lady Mary about re-taking control of the estate, and told her: 'You're letting yourself be defeated my lady, I'm sorry if its a lapse to say so but someone has to.
    But she reprimanded him for his statement, adding: 'We're old friends and as I said this lapse is probably as much my fault as it is yours.'

    Lady Mary talks to her grandmother Violet Crawley, played by Dame Maggie Smith, and she struggles to cope with her loss and said: 'All the softness in me has dried up ...maybe it was only there in his imagination.'
    Her grandmother replied: 'You must choose either death or life.'
    Meanwhile Lady Edith was travelling to London, for a candid rendevous with her editor.

    He tells her he will become a German citizen in order to divorce his wife. 
    Lady Edith replied: 'After four years of fighting you join the most hated race for me...kiss me.'
    'Here, in front of all these people?' said Gregson.
    'I don't care kiss me now.'

    Grief-stricken: Lady Mary finally comes to her senses towards the end of the episode when she attends a luncheon to talk about how to manage the estate in the future

    During the course of the episode Lady Mary return to her senses and realised that she needed to start taking charge of her son George and the Downton estate. 
    She told her old friend and butler Carson: 'I know I've spend too long in the land of the dead.'
    The thrilling first episode ends with Lady Mary attending the luncheon alongside a table of men, with the Earl of Grantham not looking too pleased about his daughter-in-law's change of heart.

    The episode also sees Nanny West's departure after Lady Grantham was given an underhanded tip-off that she was incompetent.
    It turns out however that she was caught making rude remarks to the children in their cots just as Lady Grantham walked in the room.
    What remains to be revealed in the upcoming episodes is the story behind Edna Braithwaite, who will return to Downton Abbey as Lady Grantham's maid, after Lady Rose MacClare, cousin and ward of the Granthams, played by Lily James puts an avert up in the local convenience store window.
