The over-50 bikini braggers: They love flaunting their age-defying bodies and turning us mere mortals green with envy

The over-50 bikini braggers: They love flaunting their age-defying bodies and turning us mere mortals green with envy. But read what it REALLY takes to look like this - and you won't be so jealous!

  • As we age, our muscle volume decreases and our metabolism slides
  • A 20-year-old can get away with 2,000 calories a day; after 50, it’s just 1,600
  • Sharon Stone, all 59 years of her, still looks gorgeous in a bikini
  • Cindy Crawford, 51, works out for 75 minutes from 8am three times a week
Ladies, I apologise. The pictures here will be causing a range of feelings, and I’m sure not many are good.
There’s Sharon Stone, all 59 years of her, looking gorgeous in a bikini — one of those two-piece affairs you probably owned for a summer or two in the Eighties.
Her figure is astonishing. Cut off her head (a bit harsh, but I bet some are tempted) and look at the body, and you couldn’t age it. You certainly wouldn’t put it above 30.
At 51, her training programme is incredible. Cindy Crawford works out for 75 minutes from 8am three times a week

Then there’s Halle Berry. She turned 50 last August, and a month later was pictured posing on the beach in a tiny black number many 20-year-olds may be scared to wear outside a changing room.
There were no lumps, bumps or overhang, and — pass me a 99 with an extra Flake — she had a six-pack.
You could console yourself by remembering Sharon and Halle knew the camera was on them, and had time to pull everything in and check sympathetic sun angles, but then Courteney Cox (aged 52), Cindy Crawford (aged 51) and Paul McCartney’s wife Nancy Shevell (aged 57) ruin it all by getting snapped by paparazzi looking beautiful while letting it all hang out — only nothing was hanging out.
Don’t get me started on Liz Hurley. Appalling luck with men, but no bad bikini pictures. She’ll be 52 in June.
Women my age — I turn 50 in September — will feel sadness and anger looking at these photos. Sad we didn’t relish our bikini days while we had them, and angry we let them go.
For surely, we think, looking at these women, it can’t be so hard to maintain a bikini-worthy body well into middle-age? If only I wasn’t so greedy and lazy I, too, could look this good, couldn’t I?
Cue the self-loathing and biscuit tin raids. Wrong. Let no one be fooled: a hellish world of hard work, discipline and hunger goes into those bodies.
Gwyneth Paltrow (not in the 50 club yet, but she’ll be welcomed with open arms) at least admits she ‘works her butt off’ to look as good as she does.

We are working against nature to aspire to a figure like that in our 50s. As we age, our muscle volume decreases, our metabolism slides and our calorie requirement is lower. A 20-year-old can get away with 2,000 calories a day; after 50, it’s just 1,600.
Dropping oestrogen levels in menopause cause fat to redistribute around the abdomen. With all the nutritionists and personal trainers in the world, you could try to shift it, but for those of us whose careers are not tied up in our looks, it’s nearly impossible.
For what these pictures don’t show is the hunger. That debilitating drag in your belly which can be put up with for a couple of weeks at best, before a holiday or wedding — any longer would drive us mad.
Liz Hurley says she ‘likes’ to go to bed hungry. That’s what you’d have to deal with for a body like hers. No ice-cream, no wine, no ‘stuffed to the gills’ satisfaction.
Still envy Liz Hurley? Don’t look at her taut belly, just think of the rumble within and know she’ll never enjoy melting chocolate on her tongue, or a bag of hot chips. It will make those pictures easier to look at, believe me.
So how do they do it?
CINDY CRAWFORD: 75-MINUTE WORKOUT FOR BREAKFAST
At 51, her training programme is incredible. Cindy works out for 75 minutes from 8am three times a week.
Her routine includes weights and lots of old-school lunges and squats. To keep her heart rate up, she runs up and down stairs for timed intervals, then finishes by doing abs exercises on a mat.
She says she tries to eat healthily at least 80 per cent of the time.

She has also cut out bread and drinks lots of water.

Her routine involves planks, press-ups and lots of cardio.
SHARON STONE: LEG LIFTS IN THE BATH

She eats lots of red meat — especially steak — but you can forget about a nice glass of red. Alcohol is out.

Your average person might hit pause on their exercise routine after breaking a bone.
But Courteney, 52, says breaking her arm in 2013 is the reason she’s got delightfully toned arms now — close friend Jennifer Aniston told her to use a cross trainer to build them back up.
She’s also keen on intense, 90-minute cardio dance routines, and reportedly wears a heart rate monitor to make sure she stays at peak intensity.
Once an avid runner, she also focuses on Pilates, tennis, surfing, yoga, bike riding, and martial arts, and is said to work out five times a week.
Her name has been linked to several diets over the years, including the low-carbohydrate Atkins Diet, and the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet. Luckily, she says, some of her favourite foods in the world are kale, spinach and broccoli.
DEMI MOORE: LEMON JUICE AND PEPPER DIET

That gym-honed physique certainly does not come easy.

As if that wasn’t enough, there are Demi’s gruelling yoga sessions and, of course, her eating habits.
Demi, 54, swears by a raw, organic diet — in which most foods are never heated beyond 118F in an attempt to preserve nutrients. She is also known to have tried a diet called the Master Cleanse, which involves nothing but lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup.

‘I try to walk or run with the dogs every day,’ she has said. To maintain that washboard midriff, she has admitted to drinking mugs of hot water to stave off hunger pangs.
She goes to bed hungry as she likes to eat earlier in the day, so the food doesn’t turn to fat. So what does she eat? Not much.
Her diet tends to be confined to wholegrains, vegetables, fish and ‘bits of lean meat’.

She’s not known as ‘The Body’ for nothing. Elle, 53, is an extreme sports addict. ‘I make sure I find at least 45 minutes in my day to do an outdoor sport. I love to paddleboard, surf, swim or water-ski.’
She says this is ‘much simpler and gentler’ than what she did in her modelling heyday. She likes to run barefoot on the beach near her home in Miami, doing a few lunges as she goes.
As for food, Elle adheres to the Alkaline Diet, supposed to reduce your body’s natural acidity, and drinks three litres of water a day. She tops that off with fruit smoothies.
MRS MCCARTNEY: HITS GYM ON XMAS EVE
Nancy Shevell, 57, maintains her slim figure by hitting the gym. Her personal trainer is said to put her through gruelling sessions on the stair-climber machine as well as cycling and weights. The American heiress has also been spotted scuba diving.
Her favourite workout buddy is husband Sir Paul McCartney, 74. The pair were even seen leaving the gym on Christmas Eve. And it’s not like they needed to work off the turkey and pigs in blankets — Nancy is said to have switched to a veggie diet like Paul.

Cindy Crawford's daughter Kaia Gerber, 14, lounges around in the pool while modeling a bold red bathing suit in fashion film for Miu Miu

Cindy Crawford's daughter Kaia Gerber, 14, lounges around in the pool while modeling a bold red bathing suit as she stars in a very grown-up fashion film for Miu Miu

  • The teenager has been named as the face of Miu Miu's latest campaign, which includes a stunning sun-kissed video filmed by a pool
  • Kaia gets up from a nap and walks out to the pool before diving in to retrieve a set of Mui Mui sunglasses from the pool floor
  • Her face isn't shown until the end of the clip when she emerges dramatically from the water in the glasses
It's been a year of big career firsts for Cindy Crawford's 14-year-old daughter Kaia Gerber, who is following in her mom's footsteps into the fashion world.
The latest big news for the supermodel spawn is that she has been announced as the face of Miu Miu's latest campaign, and stars in her very first, slightly risque, mini fashion film.
The video, set to gentle guitar music, features the teen waking up from a nap and hopping into an outdoor pool modelling items such as sunglasses and pool slides.

The description for the video by the brand singles out Kaia as someone who 'perfectly encapsulates the maverick femininity of the Miu Miu girl'.
After getting out of bed with a loose tunic, Kaia heads out to the pool in the clip, the camera trained on her long legs.
The focus of the edgy film is on a set of sunglasses which Kaia - after pushing off a pair of stylish pink pool slides - retrieves from the floor of the pool by jumping in.
The slow-moving clip doesn't feature the model's face until the very end when she emerges from the water wearing the sunglasses and a red swimsuit, the camera close-up on her face at a downward angle.
The ending of the clip shows Kaia lounging on a pool float wearing a one-piece swimsuit covered by the tunic, which is sheer after being soaked by the water.

It's just the latest addition to Kaia's ever-growing resume, which includes being on the cover of Vogue with her famous mom and even landing her very first fashion campaign earlier this year with high-end rocker-chic label Chrome Hearts.
The teen was named the face of the brand's Spring/Summer campaign back in February, the first since she signed with IMG Models last year.
She also previously did a CR Fashion Book editorial with brother Presley Gerber and now, her first mini fashion film.
But it's a lucky break that she was even allowed to get into the business at such a young age. Initially, Cindy didn't want Kaia to begin modeling professionally until she was 17 — but after Kaia posed for a Young Versace ad when she was ten, she was hooked.

She still had to wait a few more years before signing with IMG Models at 13, but she's OK with the pause because it allowed her to be a kid for a few more years — and after all, she added, 'mom knows best'.
'Your dad and I want you to be happy — whatever that may means so if modeling is something you like and want to continue, I can provide a road map and help you make good choices,' Cindy told her in a joint interview with The Thick in October.
But, speaking on behalf of her husband, Rande Gerber, 53, she addded: 'We also want to preserve your childhood and let you be a 14-year-old when you’re 14. There’s no rush.'
All the campaigns have proven that Kaia certainly has the looks for the job, and that's not the only thing she has gotten from her famous mom - she has also given her mini-me plenty of pertinent advice when it comes to perfecting a look for the camera.
'My mom told me to always have a thought behind my expressions,' Kaia told Teen Vogue, adding that the practice helps a picture seem deeper, and not just of a 'blank face'.
