Jessica Ennis-Hill's post-pregnancy fitness battle as she bids to become just the third new mum to retain an OIympic title

Jessica Ennis-Hill's post-pregnancy fitness battle as she bids to become just the third new mum to retain an OIympic title

  • Jessica Ennis-Hill is out to retain her heptathlon gold at the Rio Olympics
  • The 30-year-old athlete gave birth to her son, Reggie, in July 2014
  • She is bidding to become only the third new mum to retain Olympic title
  • Her coach, Toni Minichiello, documents her post-pregnancy fitness battle
Only two women in history have given birth and retained their titles in the same Olympic cycle. Jessica Ennis-Hill will be the third if she wins heptathlon gold in Rio.
Shirley Strickland, who won 80m hurdles gold in 1952 and 1956, had a boy in 1953. In 2006 Francoise Mbango Etone, who won triple jump gold in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 also had a boy, Niels.
But Ennis-Hill’s feat would be unprecedented because of the many challenges presented by seven disciplines.

I have coached Ennis-Hill, now 30, since she was 13, and I believe she is capable of winning in 12 days’ time on what could be Super Saturday 2 for Team GB, with Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford competing on the same day.
If she can, it will be down not only to bucket loads of determination, natural talent and powers of perseverance but also to the team around her.
I have been documenting her build-up to the Olympics on the blog coachtorio.comand here I show how she has returned to the top after giving birth to Reggie in July 2014.
And I predict the scores she will need to win and become Britain’s greatest ever track-and-field athlete.

HEIGHT
Jess is 5ft 4in (1.65m) and at her best high-jumps 1.95m. To jump 30cm above your head height is pretty exceptional for someone who is diminutive.
Most of the great heptathletes have been 5ft 8in or more, so she’s a rarity. Other coaches said she wouldn’t make it because she’s too small.
A lot of people judge the aesthetic rather than, like a stick of rock, cutting it and seeing what’s written through the middle. But her exceptional speed is Godgiven and like all great sportspeople — the likes of David Beckham, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal and Steve Redgrave, for example — she has a phenomenal work ethic which sometimes isn’t recognised.
A large chunk of that comes from within, the philosophy of “I’m going to crash my body because I want to”. She is incredibly focused and hard working.

A lot of her season's best scores have been in a similar ballpark to her lifetime bests

POST PREGNANCY PBs
I always tell Jess to compare her distances, times or scores with what happened after she came back from having Reggie because that is where she is now.
But as adults we all look at what we used to be able to do and it can be frustrating for her. Having said that, a lot of her season’s bests are in a similar ballpark to her lifetime bests.

She has had to battle changes to her muscles after giving birth to her son
She has had to battle changes to her muscles after giving birth to her son
MUSCLES
The abdominal muscles can become stretched and the tendon in between the two sides can split during pregnancy.
It has less impact if you’re doing middle or long distance straight line jogging events because you’re just moving in one direction. That said, it should be addressed in all athletes because long term it will have an effect.
But if you look at the nature of the heptathlon, there’s twisting, turning, jumping, so it really was a case of specifically strengthening and waiting for the abdominal muscles to function as a unit which draws the central split together.
This can take six months. For the first three months this meant a very limited range of activities and especially those requiring rotational control, for example javelin.
Abdominal training started at six weeks and at the very lowest level. Initially this meant lying on the floor with her knees bent, contracting the correct muscles and monitoring the split in the middle of the abdominals with the fingers to make sure it did not widen.
As she was able to correctly recruit the right muscles we could progress exercises to involve limb movements, rotational control and other specific, functional movements that she would require returning to sport.
At that point high level exercises like planks and abdominal crunches were completely out of the question.

Almost as soon as Ennis-Hill returned to the gym it was evident she was committed

MIND
A huge part of Jess’ comeback was being in the right state of mind. Priorities change during pregnancy and again after having the baby. Did she genuinely want to come back or did she prefer to concentrate solely on being a mother?
Was she organised enough to balance home and work life?
I looked at it with scepticism until Reggie was born. Jess had three months off, bar some work with her physiotherapist Alison Rose, bonding with Reggie until that bond was strong enough for her to come back to training.
Until that three months was over I still wasn’t sure.
Once the mind is willing you can train the body. The day Jess stepped back into the gym in November I knew she was committed.

She now only has one javelin session a week when previously she took two
She now only has one javelin session a week when previously she took two
THROWING
Both the javelin and shot put require a lot of twisting and turning. What you saw last season, when Jess struggled with her throwing, was someone who hadn’t been able to do as much work on twisting and turning.
After coming back to training, up to January was spent doing lots of aerobic work and that was very positive because women have increased blood volume, and therefore powers of endurance, after pregnancy.
In the next three months she started throwing but just in straight lines, so by the time the season started we hadn’t done a lot of specific training. Before pregnancy Jess used to do javelin twice a week and now we’re down to one session.

Hormones during her pregnancy have caused changes to her tendon structure

LEGS
During pregnancy the body releases a hormone called relaxin and your ligaments and tendons loosen so the baby can come out. It can take a year for the body to return to being close to normal even though we started seeing progress earlier.
Some of the increased joint mobility that occurred with pregnancy have remained. For example, her hips and feet are more mobile. This will require greater strength in the muscles around those joints to support the extra mobility.
In some areas this can be positive as she had very stiff ankles whereas now she has greater range which is better for performance.

Ennis-Hill has also dealt with stress fractures in her foot and Achilles issues

FEET
In 2008 Jess had three stress fractures in her right foot, which was the one she took off from in the high jump AND long jump. We made a conscious decision in order to lengthen her career to switch to a left foot take-off in the long jump to halve the amount of jumping.
After four years and the success of London I suggested switching back to the right foot.
Jess wasn’t keen on the idea but came round to it and it was incredibly successful.
But in 2013 she had Achilles problems so couldn’t jump and we never saw it in full effect.
The fact she’s jumped a personal best of 6.63m in Ratingen during a heptathlon in June wasn’t a surprise, we’re just starting to see the result of what was put in place four years ago.

Toni Minichiello believes a score of 6,800 is needed to win the gold medal
WHAT IS NEEDED TO WIN GOLD?
I think 6,600 points or above will get on the podium and 6,800 will probably be what is needed for gold.
There could be up to eight contenders.
It’s an incredibly compressed field and there aren’t any particularly stand-out athletes.
The question is who can put seven events together without a major hiccup.

Heptathlete Louise Hazel took a break from her hectic training schedule to strip off for this week's Sport magazine.
The 2010 Commonwealth gold medallist offers personal training sessions on her website, and these impressive shots of the 29-year-old give her a glowing endorsement.
Hazel looks in top shape as she bares all for Sport Uncovered, a new photography series revealing sportsmen and women as they’ve never been seen before.

And the Birchfield Harriers athlete insists she's proud of her athletic physique.
She said: 'What the Olympics showed us in 2012 is that there are a wealth of inspirational women out there who are dedicated to their sport.
'As female athletes we often get tarred with the brush of being too athletic. It shocks me. We’re sportswomen – that’s what we do. our life is about health, it's our lifestyle.'

Hazel's personal best of 6,166 points set in Germany in 2011 ranked her as the seventh best British heptathlete of all time, but she called time on her career in September 2013.
She was forced to abort a comeback at last summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow due to a flare-up of the ulcerative colitis condition she suffers from.
Sport Uncovered begins on Friday January 16 and will be followed by a number of others including footballer Marvin Sordell, Paralympian Beth Woodward and swimmer Mark Foster.

Lucy Mecklenburgh posts intimate picture of herself with new love interest Louis Smith to Instagram

'Sunday snuggles': Lucy Mecklenburgh posts intimate picture of herself with new love interest Louis Smith to Instagram

They're rumoured to have enjoyed a 'string of dates' and former TOWIE star Lucy Mecklenburgh and gymnast Louis Smith appear to have cemented their new relationship.
Lucy posted an intimate picture of the two of the two of them to her Instagram account, captioning it with the words, 'Sunday snuggles' - the pair met when she competed on talent show, Tumble.
In the snap, Louis has his eyes closed with a made-up Lucy gazes wistfully at the camera while they both wear matching black ensembles.

The snap comes just after Louis won Strictly Come Dancing for the second time during the Christmas special.
The 25-year-old competed against fellow contestants from previous series - Rachel Stevens, Lisa Riley, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Chris Hollins and Russell Grant - in the TV special.
Smith, who partnered professional Aliona Vilani, was crowned King of the Christmas Ballroom after earning a perfect score of 40 points from the judges for a quickstep, to the song Jingle Bells.

The gymnast, who was Strictly champion in 2012, lifted the Christmas Silver Star trophy after the score from the judges was combined with the vote from the studio audience in the BBC One show.
Lucy and Louis are said to have met while filming the BBC gymnastics show, which will not return after ending in September, and pals they had lots of chemistry.
‘There were lots of rumours about Louis and Lucy when he was judging Tumble and she was a contestant,’ a source told The Sun’s TV Biz. ‘It’s true they were flirting but nothing happened.’

The pal claims fitness nut Lucy, 23, initially ruled out the possibility of romance with the Olympic silver and bronze medalist, 25, because at 5ft 10in he is considerably shorter than the towering 6ft 2in she normally goes for.
The source explained: ‘Louis got with someone straight after Tumble but they split and he bumped into Lucy. She must have forgotten about his size because sparks flew and they started dating.
'The way things are looking they could be together for a long time.'
Definite chemistry: Sources claim the pair flirted while filming BBC show Tumble, on which Louis was a judge and Lucy a contestant. In November Louis posted the above picture, which he captioned 'Look who I found.. @lucymeck1 . She looks just as good in a dress as she does in a leotard #tumble'

Lucy’s reported dates with Louis come shortly after a short-lived romance with Welsh TV presenter Gethin Jones.
Lucy and Gethin - who was previously engaged to opera singer Katherine Jenkins - were first linked to each other back in August, before being spotted holding hands while on a date the following month.

But although they have called time on their fleeting romance for now, the Essex-based boutique owner insisted she and Gethin have remained friends.
Speaking in an interview with new! magazine, Lucy said: 'We’re not dating. We went out a few times a while ago but it was bad timing for both of us.
'I was so busy after Tumble and he travels a lot, so it wasn’t the best time.'
Insisting she and Gethin were never 'official', Lucy added: '[We're in touch] as friends. He’s the nicest guy. It was a mutual thing.'
Lucy was previously engaged to her TOWIE co-star Mario Falcone, and enjoyed brief romances with Mark Wright and The Wanted hunk Max George.
Meanwhile, Louis most-recently dated ex-TOWIE star Pascal Craymer, who had a fleeting romance with Lucy's ex, Mario.
MailOnline have contacted Lucy’s representatives for further comment.

Andy Murray gets engaged to girlfriend of nine years Kim Sears

Andy Murray gets engaged to girlfriend of nine years Kim Sears

  • The Wimbledon champion's representatives have confirmed engagement
  • Miss Sears has been in a relationship with Murray for more than nine years
  • Proposal puts an end to years of speculation about the couple's future
Tennis star Andy Murray has proposed to Kim Sears, his partner of more than nine years.
The Wimbledon champion's representatives have confirmed the engagement, but have not released details or where the proposal took place.
Sussex-born Miss Sears, who has an English Literature degree, has been in a relationship with Murray after the pair met at the U.S. Open in 2005. Her father is player-turned-coach Nigel Sears.
The 27-year-old has admitted he couldn't have come back to win Wimbledon in 2013 following his 2012 defeat if it hadn't been for her unwavering support.

Look of love: Left, a candid moment between the pair, and right, after winning Olympic gold in 2012
Unlike many football WAGS, Miss Sears, 26, shys away from the spotlight as she focuses on her career as an artist and looks after the couple's beloved dogs Maggie May and Rusty at their home in Surrey.
She was once described by future mother-in-law Judy Murray as 'the best thing to happen to Andy'.
Mrs Murray has kept mum so far - but she cheekily re-tweeted this message from her 'patron penguin' at St Andrews Aquarium in Fife: 'There was me thinking if it all fell through with @MontyThePenguin then the was still @andy-murray to waddle down the aisle with me....'
The Mirror reports the tennis player had been planning the ring for some time.
A source is said to have told the newspaper: 'Andy spent ages thinking about the ring, he chose the design himself and picked it up last week. He then proposed on Wednesday.
'Kim said 'yes' immediately. They are completely besotted with each other and have been there for each other through thick and thin.'
Murray was on his way to the Philippines on Wednesday to play in the International Premier Tennis League.
But he gave no indication of his big news, instead tweeting: 'Off to the Philippines for the first time today, should be a fun trip... Anyone got some suggestions for first time tourists in Manila?'
In June it was reported that bookies believed the Scot had asked Sears to marry him - after a flurry of betting on him popping the question at Wimbledon.
Tennis fans bet heavily on the champion to both retain his 2013 title and get engaged at 8/1 with bookmaker William Hill, which eventually stopped taking bets on it.
A spokesman said: 'That price was backed heavily. It indicates to us that he got engaged. Maybe someone saw him buying a ring?'

In the past Murray has been notoriously reluctant to answer questions about his relationship with Sears but earlier this year he was forced to deny that he planned to marry her after joking about his love life on Twitter.
Asked when he plans to marry Miss Sears during a Twitter Q&A with fans in January, Murray responded: 'We're getting married just after Wimbledon, should be a great day.'
But just hours later, Murray was forced to issue another tweet explaining that his words were said with his tongue firmly in cheek after the original message went viral.

At the time a spokesman for the star confirmed that 'Andy Murray is not getting married this summer.'
In a previous interview with the Scottish Daily Mail he spoke about his relationship with Miss Sears and confessed that he would like children with her in future.
He said: 'I can see myself having a family one day. It is something that I'm starting to think about because Kim and I have been together for eight years.'

It emerged today that Murray has dispensed with the services of his longstanding assistant coach Dani Vallverdu and respected physical trainer Jez Green.
The two have been working with him for five and seven years respectively, and were key members of his team when Ivan Lendl became head coach and Murray enjoyed success including a U.S. Open title, Olympic gold medal and his historic Wimbledon triumph.
In releasing a statement this afternoon, he reaffirmed his commitment to working with Amelie Mauresmo next year, with whom he teamed up at the start of this summer's grass court season.
One love: The story of Kim and Andy
Murray has been living with Kim in Surrey since 2010 but she is forced to spend a lot of time apart from him while he travels the world competing in tournaments.
He once said: 'She has been with me since the second time I played Wimbledon, just after the first summer I played.
'It has been good because her dad is a tennis coach and he still travels on the tour. She understands the sport well and is used to being away from her dad from a young age. She understands that sort of distant relationship, and yes it works well.'
It is said the couple do not live a champagne lifestyle - preferring to play Scrabble and backgammon at home in Oxshott.

Sears grew up in the village of Barcombe in West Sussex. Her father is Nigel Sears, the head coach of women's tennis in the UK, and the sport dominated her family life.
Even before she became Murray's girlfriend, she had travelled the world to attend Grand Slam events.
Murray reportedly wooed her with phone calls and flowers. Even then, she was not distracted by the romance, passing all her A-levels with straight As.
She then joined Team Murray and became her boyfriend's chauffeur. He bought her a £40,000 Mercedes to thank her for patiently ferrying him around.
He added: 'I'm lucky. I know Kim isn't with me because I'm in the spotlight. When we met I was playing qualifiers.'
The couple split in November 2009 after four years together but, after seven months apart, got back together.
In an interview in 2009 he added that he felt he was naturally a one-woman man. 'It isn't that I have anything against people who want to go drinking and find as many girls as they can.
'I don't disagree with it, but it doesn't interest me that much. I don't know whether that's because I've got an older head on my shoulders or because I'm lucky to have Kim.'
