Happy Mother's Day! Portraits of celebrity mums and daughters including Jo Wood, Liza Minnelli and Twiggy in new exhibition by photographer Terry O'Neill

British photographer Terry O'Neill has unveiled a new exhibition of celebrity mothers and daughters, including Jo Wood, Twiggy and Judy Garland, just in time for Mother's Day.

The new collection, Mum: A Snapshot, is led by Jo Wood and daughter Leah, who appear in the exhibition twice thanks to a 1981 shot of the pair on tour with Ronnie Wood and the Rolling Stones.

Capturing the special bond between mother and daughter, the show has been created in homage to the photographer's own late mother, and is free to the public this weekend, at London's White Space gallery.

'I actually did it in homage to my mother who I never had a chance to thank, because she died when I was young,'  Terry O'Neill told This Morning. 

'I never had a chance to thank her, and as you grow older of course you appreciate your mother more.'

He added: 'So I got together this exhibition as a tribute to Mother’s Day.'

Terry has been photographing celebrities for the last 50 years and the new show features both old and new pictures.

A rare gem among the collection, which was created in association with online gift specialist Not On The High Street, is a touching photograph of Liza Minnelli pictured with her mother Judy Garland, in 1963.

Terry said: 'That was when I was 20 years old, I worked on the Daily Sketch, which was a tabloid paper at the time, and I got sent round to photograph Liza Minnelli.

'I go round to this mews house in Belgravia, door opens and it's Judy Garland! 

'We got on well, and she made dinner for me and her daughter too.'

Other subjects in the heart warming collection include Emilia Fox and mother Joanna, Holly Willoughby and her mother Lynn, as well as British icon Twiggy and daughter Carly Lawson. 

Several of the shots which feature in O'Neill's exhibition were originally intended as gifts for the husbands of the women pictured.

The 1980 shot of actress Nanette Newman, photographed with her daughters Sarah Standing and TV presenter Emma Forbes, was blown up by the photographer as a surprise present for the late Bryan Forbes, director of films including The Stepford Wives.

Actress Britt Eckland was still in a London hospital after giving birth to daughter Victoria when this photograph was taken in 1965, as a gift for her husband, British actor Peter Sellers

Swedish actress Britt Eckland also commissioned O'Neill to take a picture of herself with newborn baby Victoria in 1965, as a surprise gift for her husband Peter Sellers.

The photographer revealed that the actress was still in a London hospital after giving birth, but looked radiant nonetheless.

Britain's Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon also appears in the exhibition, along with Gloria Hunniford and her late daughter Caron Keating, plus models Jodie and Jemma Kidd with mother Wendy.

She's a singer who recently proved that her ballroom prowess is nothing to be sniffed at during her stint on Strictly Come Dancing.

And Pixie Lott, 23, also showed that she's no slouch in the style department as she stepped out in a dazzling ensemble at a special screening of the new Netflix series All Hail King Julien on Sunday.

The blonde beauty turned heads as she arrived at London hot-spot Mahiki on the arm of her model beau Oliver Cheshire in a sleeveless peplum top, which featured a zigzagged monochrome design.

She clipped on a pair of additional faux sleeves of an identical design halfway down her arm to give her ensemble a touch of the unusual.

Pixie, who was exited Strictly in a shock elimination the weekend before, teamed the top with a pair of cropped black trousers and clear heels. 

Inside the screening of the new animinated show, Pixie was seen mingling with a host of well-heeled guests, including Donna Air, Jo Wood and Jaime Winstone.

It's been a busy week for Pixie, who has made appearances at a plethora of events - as well enjoying time with her model boyfriend Oliver Cheshire - since leaving Strictly.

On Thursday, she made her way to BBC Breakfast's Manchester studios for an interview.

The night before, she was among a host of celebrities who took to the red carpet for the inaugural BBC Music Awards in London.

She also made appearances at a number of other events, including a charity gala at 10 Downing Street and her launch of a facial beauty product at Bluewater in Kent.

The pop stunner recently released a new album, Platinum Pixie, in time for Christmas which features her new charity single in conjunction with Matalan, in aid of Alder Hey hospital.

She told MailOnline of her version of 1986 classic Caravan Of Love, 'It's a song that we chose because it's got very positive lyrics and it's perfect for a campaign of raising money for Alder Hey Children's Charity.

'I love Christmas. Me and my sister and brother have our stockings on our heads and we dance to Santa Claus is Coming to town by Bruce Springsteen. That's like a tradition.'

Celebrities Lead Campaign For Early Detection

Celebrities and women affected by breast cancer have taken part in a photoshoot to highlight the importance of early detection of breast cancer, and to encourage mums and daughters to talk about breast awareness this Mother’s Day.

The photoshoot saw ladies, including Dragon’s Den investor Kelly Hoppen MBE, singer Heidi Range, fashion designer Zandra Rhodes (with her very on-brand pink hair!), comedienne Olivia Lee, DJ and model Leah Weller, actress and artist Leah Wood and DJ Krystal Roxx, model personalised t-shirts sharing their own breast awareness messages.

A recent survey by ICM Research for Breast Cancer Campaign, showed more than half of women in the UK, 51%, fail to check their breasts at least every month and almost three quarters of women, 72%, rarely or never discuss checking their breasts with friends or family. The survey also revealed that 36% of women were not confident they know how to check their breasts for cancer and 28% said they were not confident they would notice a change in their breasts.

We went behind the scenes of the photoshoot to capture the ladies designing their t-shirts and the messages they wanted to highlight to the public.

Talk To The Women In Your Life About Checking Yourself, You’re Never Too Young Or Old To StartDesigner and Dragon’s Den star Kelly Hoppen said: “Breast Cancer Campaign is a cause very close to my heart- my mother and my friends have had breast cancer and I’ve had my own breast cancer scare so I’ve seen the devastating impact it has on women’s lives. Talk to the women in your life about checking yourself, you’re never too young or old to start, and if you notice a change, do something about it and book an appointment with your GP.”

Singer Heidi Range said: “Mother’s Day is a time to be grateful for our lovely mums and there are a lot of them out there who have been, or could be, affected by breast cancer. Let’s start checking our breasts regularly and talking to our mums about it to make sure they are too. Getting to know your body and noticing any changes could save your life.”

DJ and model Leah Weller was photographed with her model boyfriend Tomo Kurata. Leah said: “Breast cancer is a disease that affects thousands of families across the UK every day, particularly mothers and daughters so don’t forget to check your breasts and ask your mum and any of the women in your life to do the same. We need to start looking after each another and being more breast aware.”

An Early Diagnosis Makes All The Difference In Treatment Options Available And Ultimately Survival Rates.Breast Cancer Campaign supporter Charlotte Pittuckcarries a mutated version of the BRCA2 breast cancer gene and is undergoing a double mastectomy this year. Charlotte said: “As a mother I felt honoured to take part in the early detection shoot. An early diagnosis makes all the difference in treatment options available and ultimately survival rates. In cancers where an altered BRCA gene is present and the cancer attacks younger and more aggressively, as could happen with my gene, then early detection is our only hope. Any shoot that highlights this to people of all backgrounds and ages I want to be a part of.”
