And The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit lived up to its reputation on Monday night as some of the biggest names in music, film, and the runway arrived wearing ornate costumes created by the world's premier fashion designers.
Co-host of this year's Met Gala, Taylor Swift, arrived in a futuristic silver mini-dress with a cutaway design; the edgy costume included knee-high leather strappy stilettos and Gothic dark red lip paint.

The Blank Space hitmaker wore her platinum blonde locks softly framing her face.
Also opting for metallic hues was Brit pop star Rita Ora, who arrived in a dramatic Vera Wang gown with feathered train.
The 25-year-old beauty's dress hugged her curves perfectly and she revealed sheer cut-outs at the back and around her torso.
Rita's blonde locks were pulled back tight in a centre parting and she sported shimmery silver eye-shadow to complete the look.

Meanwhile Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who is chairwoman of the Met Gala, was the first to arrive wearing a tasseled and ornately patterned gown.
She was joined by her 28-year-old daughter Bee Shaffer, who is a segment producer on Late Night With Seth Meyers.
Poppy Delevingne showed up in a plunging metallic gown that bared plenty of flesh. The blonde model paired her silver gown with dark red lip paint as she wore her locks down over her slender shoulders.

The Met Gala is hosted this year by Taylor Swift as well as Editor of American Vogue Anna Wintour, Idris Elba, and Jonathan Ive, chief design officer of Apple.
Wintour took over as chairwoman of the gala in 1999.
Since then, she has transformed what was once a local fundraiser into one of the world's most elite costume parties that ranks as a celeb magnet only equaled by the Academy Awards red carpet - with A-listers hungry for a chance to be the muse of a fashion designer.
The honorary chairs are the Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld; Miuccia Prada; and Nicolas Ghesquière, Louis Vuitton’s artistic director.
All will be in attendance except for Mr. Lagerfeld, who will be in Cuba because the Chanel Cruise show is in Havana the day after the gala, according to the New York Times.
The newspaper added that tickets this year are $30,000 apiece, and tables are $275,000. The party and exhibit are sponsored (this year Apple is the main underwriter), so all the money raised from ticket sales goes to the Costume Institute. Last year, more than $12.5 million was raised.
While the price of a ticket may itself be an insurmountable bar for most, the event is also invite only, with Wintour presiding meticulously over the guest list, which predictably includes film stars, pop sensations, and fashion models each year - with the addition most recently of reality stars.
The theme for this year's ball is Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, which seeks to prove that the machine is an 'equal protagonist' to the hand in creating the best fashions of our recent past, our present and our future.
Regular folks who aren't famous enough to score an invite to the gala can simply come see the exhibit beginning May 5.

They'll be greeted, first, by a stunning wedding dress by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel's 2014 couture collection with a massive golden train that exemplifies the best sort of hand-machine fusion.
The dress - made of a synthetic fabric called scuba knit - was hand-molded, machine-sewn, and then hand-finished, with intricate embroidery in pearls and gemstones that form a glittering baroque pattern.
Some of the garments in Manus x Machina, which is sponsored by Apple, are made mostly by hand, and some mostly or even entirely by machine. But most of them - from a diverse grouping of the world's greatest designers - are a combination of both.

The British designer Gareth Pugh, for example, presents two dresses from his recent collection that are made of plastic drinking straws, one in all black and one in all white.
'Every straw was cut by hand,' the designer explains in accompanying notes. They were attached, each individually, to a shift of machine-sewn black silk and wool.
On the more classic side, there's a 1953 Dior haute couture dress - machine sewn, and hand-finished with stunning artificial flowers, clover and grass in green, pink and purple silk floss.
