In it's first year it was nominated in the Best Drama section and in it's second year Dame Maggie Smith won a nomination for best supporting actress.

But this year Downton Abbey has failed to pick up a single nomination at the BAFTA Television Awards.

The lack of acknowledgement for the third series, which received a mix reception at the time, has led to speculation that the fourth series of the stately home drama will be it's last.

It is thought that the show, which was one of the most-watched throughout the whole of 2012, has suffered after a number of the key stars have left, including Dan Stevens who played Matthew Crawley.

The news comes as the BBC has overtaken ITV in terms of nominations, receiving five times the amount of the channel on which Downton is aired, with TV film The Girl and crime series The Accused leading the nominations.

The BBC-HBO co-produced movie The Girl, about the tumultuous relationship between director Alfred Hitchcock and actress Tippi Hedren, has received nods in four categories.

Sienna Miller is up for Leading Actress, Toby Jones for Leading Actor and Imelda Staunton for Supporting Actress for her role as Hitchcock's wife Alma.

Olivia is up for two accolades, including Female Performance In A Comedy Programme for Twenty Twelve.

BBC comedy series Twenty Twelve has a total of four nods in three categories, with Olivia set to battle co-star Jessica Hynes for Female Performance In A Comedy Programme.

Downton wasn't the only surprise snub, hit BBC series Call The Midwife only had one nod for the Radio Times Audience Award.

However, Downton star Hugh Bonneville has been acknowledged for his performance in Twenty Twelve with a Male Performance In A Comedy Programme nod.

Parade's End is up in two categories, including Leading Actress for Rebecca Hall.

She will compete with Sienna, Sheridan Smith for Mrs Biggs and Anne Reid for Last Tango In Halifax.

Unsurprisingly, the London 2012 Games feature heavily in the Sport & Live Event category, including the Olympics 'Super Saturday', Opening Ceremony and the Paralympic Games. 

Danny Boyle's Opening Ceremony is also up for the Radio Times Audience Award, which is voted for by the public.

The star-studded ceremony will be host by Graham Norton, who himself is up for Entertainment Performance for his BBC chat show.

The winners of the Arqiva British Academy Television Awards will be announced at London's Royal Festival Hall on May 12.

Some of the very British elements of the Olympics Opening Ceremony may have left some viewers across the world bemused, but at least one character was instantly recognisable - bumbling funnyman Mr Bean. 

The London Symphony Orchestra took centre stage playing Chariots of Fire as Mr Bean - British actor Rowan Atkinson - took to a keyboard.

Half-way through the performance he took out his phone and then proceeded to sneeze, while playing one key repetitively.

He look around as though he was bored and stared at his wrist watch as the orchestra played on. 

The performance cut to a video of Mr Bean running down the beach made famous in the opening scene of the 1981 film. 

He looked as if he was struggling against the other runner, but looked jubilant when he finally crossed the finish line. 

Last night Mr Bean was trending on social networking site Twitter as well as the words Rowan Atkinson.

Emma J Thomas tweeted: 'If there ever was a time for the world to get British humour then #mrbean would be it!'

Another user Vrinda Webb wrote: 'Mr Bean, Bond parachuting with the Queen, a horde of Mary Poppins fighting off a 50ft Voldemort. #Olympics ceremony exceeds my expectations.'

But Olympics sponsor Samsung drew criticism for their product placement as the phone Rowan Atkinson pulled out of his pocket was clearly identifiable as a Samsung model.

Members of the public lambasted the public on Twitter for their ‘shameless’ product placement.

Samsung posted a picture of Atkinson with the phone on Twitter, along with the message: ‘A very special performance of Chariots of Fire featuring Mr Bean and a #Samsung Galaxy Ace!’

Other users commented on the appearance of a modern BMW Mini.

Rising star: Jasmine Breinburg has been a hot topic on Twitter following her performance in the Opening Ceremony

Having played a starring role in the Olympic Opening Ceremony one volunteer is clearly not short of admirers.

Viewers of the spectacular show have taken to Twitter to single out Jasmine Breinburg who had a major role in the show-stopping event.

The 18-year-old Brit School student helped to bring the programme out of the industrialisation segment of the show and into the digital age.

As part of the Frankie and June say thanks Tim segment, a tribute to British scientist Tim Berners-Lee, Jasmine shone as she played a girl who had lost her phone on a night out.

A young man who glimpsed June on the Tube picked up her lost mobile phone, and love triumphed after he chased desperately sought to find her on a night out.

Set to classic Brit tunes throughout the last 40 years, Jasmine clearly dazzled.

The segment ends with Jasmine sharing a kiss with her male counterpart much to the delight of the audience.

The scale of the show, watched by an estimated billion people worldwide, was clearly starting to hit home for Jasmine last night however.

She said: 'It was amazing, that's an understatement, it was absolutely crazy.

'The role wasn't fully described and I don't think I initially understood just how big it would all be.

'Beforehand you are the practices with people you are now friends with and have become close with and it seems normal.

'Then all of a sudden you look up and see your face on the big screen and think... oh, that's crazy.'

He's often seen cruising the streets of California on his beloved motorcycle but it seems that David Beckham's not so confident when it comes to driving speedboats.

The global superstar mesmerised the watching world when his long anticipated role in the London 2012 Olympic Games was finally revealed.

The 37-year-old was charged with driving the Olympic Torch via a speedboat down the River Thames, but it was down to some clever camera work that he accomplished the feat.

Although the LA Galaxy footballer was standing at the helm with two hands firmly on the wheel, there was another man who gave a steady hand to the boat.

While viewers at home watched the dapper dressed Beckham power toward Tower Bridge, they were unable to see the other man on the boat crouching next to him.

The father-of-four looked at his best in a black suit with a matching tie and a white shirt as he smoothly smiled down the camera.

However, the illusion created in part by director Danny Boyle was unable to fool supporters of the games who watched on from the river bank.

As David's boat, which was named Max Power, approached the famous Tower Bridge, a huge explosion of fireworks went off and added to the total experience of the opening ceremony.

Tower Bridge came alight due to the spectacular display as Beckham continued to stand at the head of the boat.

As his boat continued along to the nearest possible water way to the Olympic stadium, his journey and involvement in the proceedings came to end.

David was greeted at the dock by Sir Steve Redgrave who took up the baton and lit his golden torch from the one Beckham had delivered.

As the five time Olympic gold medalist jogged off toward the stadium, David watched on proudly having completed his moment in the spotlight.

The footballer - who was famously snubbed from Team GB for the Games - had promised he would still play a part and he certainly didn't disappoint.

Accompanying the father-of-four on the boat was Jade Bailey, Arsenal and England Under 17 ladies footballer player, who actually had the honour of holding the torch.

The boat finally docked at Stratford where the flame was taken to the opening ceremony. 

The football star’s role in proceedings had been shrouded in mystery.

Beckham has previously spoken of his disappointment at missing out but said he was determined to enjoy the Games as a fan.

'I am going to be just proud just to be there as a fan more than anything,' he said. 'In a part of London where I grew up playing soccer over the fields that have been changed now. As a fan and an Englishman I am going to be very proud.'

David had earlier spent time with Michelle Obama where he showed her exactly how to bend it like him, in east London.

Proving the First Lady has that competitive edge she gave Team USA a rousing pep talk just hours ahead of the opening ceremony, urging the athletes to 'have fun - but also win'.

She met America's sports stars at their training base in east London, where she thanked them for their inspiring determination and said it was 'otherworldly' to be in London to witness them on the world stage.

Mrs Obama then hosted an exercise session as part of her 'Let's Move!' anti-obesity campaign, where she put on an affectionate and jovial display with the British footballer, who gave her tips on her soccer skills.

In just over a week's time the Olympic Stadium will host the world's top athletes as they bid to become the best of their generation.

But before then, there is the small matter of the £27million Opening Ceremony, which is currently shrouded in secrecy.

However, these images show a rare and revealing glimpse inside the stadium as preparations begin for the event, which is being organised by Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle and will be watched by one billion people around the world.

Traditional: The Olympic Stadium will be transformed into a British rural idyll, complete with real cows, sheep and a horse-drawn plough. Some of those who will take part are pictured

As these pictures show, the stadium is being transformed into a British rural idyll. Traditional countryside cottages can be seen together with a mining wheel, harking back to the country's proud mining industry. 

Mimicking scenes across the country every weekend, a cricket pitch is also included with some of those taking part in the ceremony pictured practicing a game. Performers were also spotted at the site today wearing costumes which looked like they belong in the Victorian era.

When it comes to the actual event next Friday, the stadium will be packed with 80,000 spectators, 16,000 athletes, 10,000 performers, 70 sheep, 12 horses, ten chickens, three cows, two goats and even dogs and geese.

Despite the preparations now well and truly underway, it was revealed today that the security shambles that engulfed London 2012 has now forced the Opening Ceremony to be slashed by half an hour.

Danny Boyle's spectacle has been cut to three hours to ensure the 80,000 fans in the Olympic Stadium do not get stranded and left unable get home on Friday, July 27.

The extravaganza was due to finish at 12.30am but will now end around midnight to allow people enough time to get on packed public transport.

Ongoing fears over security also means Games organisers want more time to get the huge crowd  safely out of the Olympic Stadium, a source has said.

Scenes have now been shortened and one bike stunt element has been scrapped completely to avoid misery for spectators coming to Stratford, east London for the event.

TIMINGS FOR OPENING CEREMONY

20.12 - Pre-show begins at the Olympic Stadium at this exact minute, chosen because it matches the year in which the Games is taking place in.

21.00 - Danny Boyle's £27 million extravaganza begins with the stadium transformed into the British countryside. Most elements of the show are still being kept completely secret.

00.00-00.30 - The show ends, up to 30 minutes earlier than planned

'The show has been cut because of fears that the checkpoints couldn't cope with the huge rush in and out of the stadium,' a London 2012 source told The Sun.

'It's not just crowds of fans, athletes and performers G4S and our soldiers will have to cope with  - it's dozens of live animals as well.

'All will have to be checked and searched before being allowed into the secure area. It's a huge logistical nightmare.'

A London 2012 spokesman told MailOnline: 'Performers are rehearsing sections and transitions to ensure they are as tight as possible. This is normal in any production, whether it be theatre or ceremonies.

'We need to make sure the show comes in on time to make sure spectators can get home on public transport, so we have taken the tough decision to cut a small stunt bike sequence of the show.

'We will be paying contracts in full and giving full credit in the programme. The show is set to finish between 12am and 12.30am.'

They denied that the decision was connected to the G4S security debacle.

It is yet another damning blow for security company G4S, who will be managing the crowd, after thousands of armed forces and police were brought in because they couldn't provide enough staff themselves.

Yesterday boss Nick Buckles, whose company's share value had plummeted by £400 million, admitted to MPs that their handling of the Olympic contract was a 'humiliating shambles'.

The ceremony will include a cricket match, real horses pulling a plough and ducks paddling in a lake. 

There will even be an artificial cloud to produce rain, to reflect typical British weather.

Performers involved in the event have been sworn to secrecy, rehearsals had taken place behind steel fencing and only a handful of people were privy to the full details.

But as preparations for the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony got underway, organisers forgot one crucial detail – there is no roof on the Olympic stadium and the entire process was being filmed from above.

Last month, aerial images emerged of a ‘secret’ set design based on BBC soap EastEnders.

Artistic director Mr Boyle, is still not revealing any more details and said: ‘We want people to discover it for themselves on the night.

'We want it to be a puzzle until the unveiling, so that people can experience it as it goes on.’
