Celebrity Knobbly Knees ! They're beautiful and slaves to staying slim...

They're beautiful and slaves to staying slim. Alas, that's what leaves so many celebrities with . . . KNOBBLY KNEES!

A chic black mini-dress and high heels should have provided the perfect showcase for Angelina Jolie's long, lean legs.
Yet, instead of drawing admiring glances, the outfit merely highlighted the beautiful 40-year-old actress's terrifyingly bony knees, with every tendon and sinew exposed like an anatomist's drawing.
But while her figure may have sparked worried comments when she stepped out last week, she isn't the only celebrity to have such sharply protruding kneecaps.

Demi Moore, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kate Moss have all revealed painfully bony knees. And doctors are warning that the look is not just unflattering, it's downright dangerous.
'No one is naturally that skinny,' says consultant physician Dr David Ashton. 'These women are probably existing in a state of permanent denial.'
Even worse, he points out that behind these unseemly knobbly knees is dangerously poor body composition.
'As we get older, from the late 30s onwards, we naturally lose muscle mass. This is called sarcopenia.
'It's inevitable, but can be mitigated with weight-bearing exercises, such as tennis and walking. It's vital that women do at least some or they will rapidly see diminishing muscle.'
The beautiful Donna Air has always been coltishly leggy. But at 36, her knees look worryingly bony. We lose muscle mass from our late 30s onwards, so perhaps it’s time Donna hit the tennis court with Pippa Middleton, her boyfriend James’s sister

There are key muscles, in particular the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis, which run down the thigh to either side of the knee. Put bluntly, if you don't do the right exercise you'll have no muscle definition around the knees.
'Look at athletes,' says Dr Ashton. 'They have beautifully defined legs, even if they're very slender. It's muscle.'
The fact that Hollywood stars often have very low body fat only highlights the lack of muscle around the kneecaps.
'If you rely on dieting to keep you thin, by your 40s or early 50s there will be no fat padding left around the knees,' says Dr Ashton.
Kate Moss famously eschews a healthy lifestyle in favour of partying, and the 42-year-old model’s scrawny knees reveal the toll it’s taken on her body. Her jutting joints show low body fat and little muscle tone. Not a good look

Lack of fat also means that skin sags around the area, a problem exacerbated by sun exposure.
Long-term, there are significant health risks. 'A lack of lean muscle means you will become feeble,' says Dr Ashton.
A simple test of muscle strength is to see whether you can rise from a chair without using your hands. 'If not, your muscle mass is poor. A third of women over 50 fall into this category.'
Incredibly, Dr Ashton also believes very knobbly knees could be a sign that some skinny stars are technically obese, which means they may suffer from high cholesterol levels and insulin resistance. Lack of calcium in the diet means there may be a high risk of osteoporosis.
'Women ought to be less than 25 per cent fat,' says Dr Ashton. 'Many super-skinny celebrities will be as much as 50 per cent fat because of the lack of lean muscle mass.
'As they have no lean muscle mass, you're looking at two eggs stuck to a broomstick. It's not a good look.'

  • One in four adults say they choose where to go on their next getaway based on their favourite movie or TV set
  • The Lord of the Rings' filming locations in New Zealand top a new study commissioned by HBO Entertainment
  • Game of Thrones features three times in the top 10, with viewers travelling to Northern Ireland, Iceland and Malta
One in four adults now regularly pick where to go on their next holiday based on filming locations used in their favourite TV shows or films.
New Zealand, famously the location of filming for much of The Lord of the Rings franchise, came top in the poll of film locations we would most like to visit commissioned by HBO Entertainment.

Second is New York, where fans of Sex and the City want to retrace the stiletto steps of heroine Carrie Bradshaw as she flaunts her way from one Cosmopolitan to another with her three besties.
The HBO phenomenon, Game of Thrones, features three times in the top 10, with viewers now travelling to The Causeway Coast and Glens in Northern Ireland, Iceland and Malta off the back of the success of the epic fantasy series.
And the popularity of Broadchurch saw West Bay in Dorset feature at number five in the list.
Colin Smith, Director of HBO Home Entertainment UK, which commissioned the research to mark the release of Game of Thrones Season 5 on digital HD, said: 'When choosing a holiday destination, there are already a large number of things to consider - things like cost, travel time and weather.

'While we might have only considered the more well-known tourist destinations before, some shows are introducing us to countries or cities away from the beaten track, and are helping to broaden our horizons when it comes to our travel plans.'
Moyra Locke, Head of Marketing at Northern Ireland Screen added: 'Game of Thrones is a phenomenal worldwide success and everything about the series can be talked of in superlatives.
'It is a magnificent showcase for many stunning locations across Northern Ireland and has had a significant, positive effect on tourism here.
'We have made no secret of the fact that we hope Game of Thrones will do for Northern Ireland what Lord of the Rings did for New Zealand.'

New Zealand came top of the most popular TV holiday choices, after being used as the main location in the Lord of the Rings series, followed by Sex and the City's home of New York City.
Third place went to The Giant's Causeway, in Northern Ireland, one of several Game of Thrones locations to feature in the poll, along with The Hangover's location of Las Vegas.
Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland, which featured in the Harry Potter films, came sixth, followed by Paris, used to film Inception, and Benidorm, in Spain - home to the ITV hit of the same name.

Other locations to feature in the poll include Ko Phi Phi Leh, in Thailand - from The Beach (15), Notting Hill, in London, from the film of the same title (19) and even Marbella, Spain, after it has been featured in episodes of The Only Way is Essex (22).
Kings Cross station, in London, used in the Harry Potter films (16) also made it into the top 20, along with The Beverly Wilshire Hotel, in Los Angeles, (24) which features heavily in Pretty Woman.
Researchers also found films and TV shows aren't just affecting where we go on holiday though, as two thirds admit to spending time on their break catching up on the latest releases.
One in four even avoid watching certain films or TV box sets so they can 'save them' to watch while they are away.
And three in ten reckon they are now more likely to spend their time on holiday watching a film or TV show on their tablet or laptop than they are reading a book.

Natalie Portman steals the spotlight from fashionistas Sarah Jessica Parker and Doutzen Kroes at New York City Ballet gala

It was a who's who of Hollywood as the stars came out for the annual New York City Ballet 2013 Fall Gala on Thursday.
The glamorous affair - which was hosted by Sarah Jessica Parker - drew plenty of big names to the David H Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, who didn't fail to impress on the red carpet.
Natalie Portman stole the show as she supported acclaimed choreographer husband Benjamin Millepied, who presented his original work at the event.

The 32-year-old mom-of-one looked simply stunning in her textured column dress, which featured colour-blocking.
The turquoise, yellow and black creation emphasised her svelte figure, while her heavily made-up eyes, nude lips and flowing chestnut locks set off the outfit to perfection.
Benjamin, who will take over as the new Director Of Dance at the Paris Opera Ballet in September 2014, looked dapper in his black suit, which he teamed with a crisp white shirt with black buttons and a black bow tie.

The famed designers teamed up with choreographers Justin Peck and Angelin Preljocaj respectively as part of the night's performances, while Benjamin sought costume inspiration from Iris van Herpen.
'I was very much inspired by the emotion in the piece and wanted the costumes to mirror the highs and lows,' Prabal says of creating his costumes.
Victoria's Secret beauty Doutzen Kroes added some edge to all the glamour in her all-black outfit.

A soft rosy hue on her cheeks only accentuated her possible pregnancy glow, though as the actress only confirmed her previous pregnancy three months before her due date, it's likely we're in for another long wait.
A day after making a dazzling appearance at the Brazil Foundation Gala in New York in a showstopping red lace gown, Nicky Hilton once again displayed her fashion prowess.
The 29-year-old looked angelic in a Grecian floor-length cream gown with sheer back panel and beaded waist and neckline.
