Speaking to Hunger editor Holly Fraser, Taylor Swift's pal said: 'The challenges I think young musicians face is, just, it's hard to stay with your vision. Everybody has an opinion. Everybody has a way that they see your career should go.'
She added: 'Sometimes you just gotta stick with your gut, stick with your instinct and stick with your personal vision because at the end of the day you gotta live with it.'
Zendaya, an actress, singer, producer and designer was recently named as one of Time magazine's 30 most influential teenagers alongside the likes of Malala Yousafzei, Malia Obama, Jaden Smith and Amandla Stenberg.
Hunger magazine snapped Zendaya up after being impressed by her 'dignified, outspoken and intelligent nature', which they say has set her apart from her contemporaries and made her the perfect celebrity to front their Autumn/Winter issue, featuring on four limited edition covers.

But despite the high praise and numerous accolades, Zendaya approaches the role model tag with caution, telling the publication: 'I don't think it's important to be a role model because if you're a role model you're playing a role, pretending to be someone, and I don't think any artist should be pretending to be anyone but themselves.'
She continued: 'Nobody's stupid - if you're trying to be something that you are not, people will realise at some point that you are not being authentic to who you are. It eats you up inside.
'For me, I try not to be a role model, I just, in the words of Tupac Shakur, try to be a real model, which means you're just being yourself and trying to be the best you can be. I think in that way of doing your best, you kind of inspire others to be the best them.'
Asked who inspires her she reveals she looks to Vivienne Westwood: 'I'm inspired by her just because, you know, her stuff is different. I think she's never trying to be different. It's just effortless to her and I can connect to.'

In February this year, Zendaya slammed Giuliana Rancic after the Fashion Police host joked the singer might smell of weed, just because she had her hair in dreadlocks.
The fashion critic said, of Zendaya's appearance at the Academy Awards: 'I feel like she smells smells like patchouli oil… or maybe weed.'
The teen, who was 18 at the time, reacted furiously on Twitter, accusing the E! anchor of being 'ignorant, disrespectful and outrageously offensive'.
'There is a fine line between what is funny and disrespectful,' she wrote. 'Someone said something about my hair at the Oscars that left me in awe. Not because I was relishing in rave outfit reviews, but because I was hit with ignorant slurs and pure disrespect.
'To say that an 18-year-old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or “weed” is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive. I don’t usually feel the need to respond to negative things but certain remarks cannot go unchecked.'

Meanwhile Zendaya hit headlines earlier this month when she forced Los Angeles-based fashion magazine Modeliste to pull its November issue because it featured dramatically retouched photos of her body.
Modeliste never intended to publish the manipulated images after profusely apologising to Zendaya.
And while over-the-top photo editing is far too common in the magazine industry, the teen star made it a point to speak out against the images as soon as she saw them.
Zendaya, whose full name is Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman, took to Instagram to post a side-by-side image of the retouched and unedited versions of one photo from the shoot to make a statement about the impossible beauty standards inflicted on women.
'Had a new shoot come out today and was shocked when I found my 19 year old hips and torso quite manipulated,' she wrote. 'These are the things that make women self conscious, that create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have.
Despite the praise, Zendaya approaches the role model tag with caution, telling the publication: 'I don't think it's important to be a role model because if you're a role model you're playing a role, pretending to be someone'

Little Mix keep it chic in Rankin photo shoot as they discuss the pressures of not being 'overly sexual' in the music industry

'We're not here to represent perfection': Little Mix keep it chic in Rankin photo shoot as they discuss the pressures of not being 'overly sexual' in the music industry

They are currently one of the biggest girl groups in the world, after founding fame on The X Factor in 2011.
But Little Mix, who are gearing up for the release of their new single Black Magic, have revealed they despise the pressure of having to look good in the music industry.
The pop stars - Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall - have posed for a striking set of pictures, taken by renowned photographer Rankin, and in the accompanying interview with Hunger Magazine they were quizzed about the importance of being ‘real’.

‘Really important,’ confessed Jade. ‘When we first got together I think we realised that there wasn’t anyone in that lane that was representing girls in a positive way without being overly sexual.
‘I think we’ve filled that gap now. At first we were worried about getting girls on our side, but thankfully they came flooding in, I think young girls needed an ally in music.’
‘We’re not here to represent perfection, because none of us are perfect,’ added Jesy.

The group, who have not released an album since their 2013 hit Salute, are in the midst of a busy promotional tour for their new music.
Speaking about their upcoming album, Perrie said: ‘We started writing straight off the back of a tour, there wasn’t a break.
‘We knew what we wanted to do, we wrote a whole album and sat down at my house making notes and then with our label, but it didn’t feel perfect.
‘We’re such perfectionists that it got to the point where we decided to start again. We took a few months off, had a time out and came back and started the album again.’

In the photo shoot, the four-piece suited up in chic ensembles in a series of black and white images for the publication.
Perrie, who is engaged to singing sensation Zayn Malik, cut a stylish figure in flared trousers and a cut-out bralet which was teamed with a tailored blazer and a matching beret.
Elsewhere, 23-year-old Leigh-Anne looked sensational in a corset-inspired two-piece, which boasted a fitted bodice with lace detail.
While Jesy oozed sophistication in a sleeveless waistcoat, Jade stood out in a white shirt with tailored trews with braces.

Raunchy Coco de Mer film gets green light to be shown across the UK... featuring bare bottoms being spanked and sexy lingerie

Is this the most X-rated advert EVER? Raunchy Coco de Mer film gets green light to be shown across the UK... featuring bare bottoms being spanked and sexy lingerie

  • Coco de Mer teamed up with Rankin Film and ad agency TBWA\London
  • Its 2.5 minute clip features lots of sexy and bizarre moving imagery
  • Snippets are spliced together at high speed to electro house music
  • Film is running run online and in cinemas nationwide, and on TV in future
Bare bottoms being spanked, naked nipples being tweaked and pursed lips smothered in bright red lipstick all feature in what is being hailed as the most X-rated advert of all time.
Erotic lingerie brand Coco de Mer launched the two-and-a-half-minute footage called 'X', during which viewers are treated to a steamy collage of sexy images and vignettes - which are not safe for work - spliced together at high speed to electro house music.
Shot by photographer Rankin in collaborating with advertising agency TBWA/London, it also features more bizarre and macabre imagery such as an egg, the Grim Reaper and a digger.

Coco de Mer launched the film at a gallery in Soho on 18 May, and it will be rolled out across cinemas in the UK.
At the launch, Rankin told campaignlive.co.uk that 'X' was 'definitely the best thing that I have done in film', adding: 'It has layers of meaning and to get that in advertising is rare.'
Makers say 'X' immerses the viewer in the deepest desires of the erotic imagination, showing a roller-coaster ride of images, from seemingly banal everyday moments to evocative images of sexy lingerie.

The concept was created by Walter Campbell, creative director at TBWA\London, and was shot by a variety of directors and photographers including Rankin, Vicky Lawton, David Allain, Damien Fry & Joe Hunt, Trisha Ward and Bronwyn Parker-Rhodes.

The film, which is being entered for various prestigious awards such as the Cannes Lions festival, is running run online and in cinemas nationwide, as well as on TV in the future.
It has been received with unsurprisingly mixed reactions.
Some have said it's 'brave, strange and disturbing', while magazine boss Michael Zivyak described it as 'gorgeous, sexy, pretentious nonsense', which seems to sit bang in the middle.
Rankin said: 'What I loved about the concept was how it visualised the way in which we absorb information nowadays. It examines our appetite for visceral and engaging imagery, reflecting how we consume as quickly as a click.

'This film takes our obsessions and ramps them up to intense new levels. Rather than selling you a dream, we're allowing people to feel like they're in one, experiencing it live as they watch the film unfold.'
Lucy Litwack, Managing Director of Coco de Mer said: 'We want to set a conversation in motion that talks about what is actually inspiring the mind to return to the notions of sexual delight.
'The core of the campaign is Coco de Mer's real commitment to creating a more vital, more beautiful erotic landscape through which our audience can explore.'
Walter Campbell said: 'As masters in the art of longing and yearning, Coco de Mer were in the perfect position to encourage a more progressive and liberated viewpoint for those who are interested.
'The erotic doesn't get the same overt attention as everything else on the cultural menu, so we created a film to surprise, excite and most importantly, encourage people to delve that little bit deeper into their fantasies - to reignite that connection'
