Is Gypsy Your Next Netflix Obsession? Star Melanie Liburd on the dark new thriller.

Is Gypsy Your Next Netflix Obsession?

Star Melanie Liburd on the dark new thriller.

In the new Netflix series Gypsy—premiering June 30—New York therapist Jean Holloway (Naomi Watts) can’t seem to leave her work at the office. In fact, over the course of the show she uses what her patients tell her in confidence to insert herself into their lives in some unnerving—not to mention unethical—ways.
And the bad behavior doesn’t stop at the office; there’s something off about her home life and her lawyer husband, Michael (Billy Crudup), as well. Here, Melanie Liburd—whose Alexis works closely alongside Michael, much to the dismay of Jean—shares what made the show so appealing to actors, and how her work follows her home as well.
This is a series about a therapist who crosses some major lines with her patients. How did you get involved?
From the moment I got the script, I was just intrigued—I was wondering, who is this character. But at first, I actually auditioned for a different character, and sent about five takes in a British accent and five in an American accent. I was a little bit of a lengthy process but then when I got the part of Alexis, I was over the moon.
What about Alexis made her intriguing?
She’s an aspiring writer, she moved to New York where she’s working but also looking for love—and she’s working for Jean’s husband. So, she has her professional, glamorous, legal-office side where everything is in place, and she’s listening in on Mike and Jean’s calls—she knows everything that’s going on—but she also has a totally different personal side.

Being caught between Michael and Jean is a tricky place to be. She’s sort of in a position to hear the lies everyone’s telling.
Her relationship with Michael is very interesting to explore, especially how she gets sucked into his life with Jean. As you know, assistants listen in and hear everything, so she’s hearing way too much information and getting pulled into their world. The interesting is with Alexis moving forward in this season is that she has so many secrets—how does she keep them?
A lot of the way that Naomi’s character works is by telling people little lies based on what she knows about them to slowly gain their trust. When do you lie?
If I told you that, I’d be giving away everything! Life is complicated, and sometimes we find ourselves in situations when things just sort of pop out of our mouths. That’s what happens with Jean; she finds herself starting something off and she just keeps on going with it. I think it’s completely normal and we’ve all been in situations like that and made a split decision. I don’t think a little white lie hurts anyone.
This is a very serious show. Did things get a little more lighthearted for you all once the cameras were off?
After one tough scene, I had this conversation with Billy—we would felt so awful—and he said, “If we feel like this, it probably means we’re on the right track.”
Having finished the first season of something with such an edgy nature to do, are you looking for something with a different tone for your next project?
I love where drama hits comedy because I think there’s always some kind of comedy in any terrible situation. That’s how we survive.
One of the things that’s so interesting about Gypsy is realizing how much we all reveal about ourselves without even trying. Did being on the show make you think twice about your own behavior?
I would love to be an actor who didn’t take anything home with me, especially when it’s this kind of sensitive, psychological stuff. But thing stay with you, especially when you’re filming. Anyway, what’s wonderful about being an actor in the first place is that every time I get a script, I’m studying people’s behavior. People do all of the things that I might portray. And they’re not crazy, they’re just people. To me, it’s just fascinating.

The Cinderella actress, who is dating Doctor Who star Matt Smith, smouldered in the sexy image which saw her eyes outlined in bronze and golden hues to afford her look a natural yet glamorous feel. Her alabaster skin looked flawless and untouched as she gazed into the camera with a gorgeous intense stare.

Saving the raunchier snaps for the inside of the magazine, Lily looked prudish on the front of the magazine in a ruffled Victoriana style blouse.
Her unkempt hair and minimal make-up provided the shoot with a laid-back but tousled bed-mussed feel.
Lily spoke candidly in the accompanying interview, as she opened up about her boyfriend's nude picture scandal in 2014.
Many Hollywood stars had phones hacked, when nude images leaking on to the internet, including those of her boyfriend Matt and his ex-girlfriend Daisy Lowe.
She said: 'It was terrifying and so unfair. It makes you conscious of not doing… You shouldn’t have to censor yourself in that way. I’ve begun to think like this, and it’s really sad.'
On the subject of women and feminism, the stunning star said: 'I realized really early on, especially because I’m young, that people will take advantage.
'I’m very open, and I stupidly thought that people would be open and fair with me, but they’re not. I sort of found out the hard way. Of course [I’m a feminist]. I don’t even understand that question.'
Lily also discussed how her young fans react to her after she starred in Cinderella: 'I didn’t want to break the illusion. I sort of wanted to pretend that I was Ella.
'They asked, "Where are your sisters? Is the magic real?" Of course it’s real! Courage and kindness, courage and kindness.'

Kirsten Dunst reveals she went to rehab after the 'totally ridiculous' pressures of being a Hollywood actress led to depression

Kirsten Dunst reveals she went to rehab after the 'totally ridiculous' pressures of being a Hollywood actress led to depression

She's worked in Hollywood for most of her life, starting modelling at age three and acting at age six.
Now at age 33, Kirsten Dunst is looking back on her acting successes and hard times for the September issue of Town & Country magazine.
Specifically of her rehab treatment in 2008, the actress diagnosed her depression as a cause of 'totally ridiculous expectations people put on actors.'

Kirsten voluntarily checked herself into the Cirque Lodge treatment center in Utah when she was 27-years-old for depression amid rumours of drug and alcohol abuse.
'What people expect of an actor is totally ridiculous,' she told the publication.
'It's unfair that an artist is expected to speak really well in public and have skin tough enough to withstand sometimes really hurtful criticism, but also, in order to do the job, be really sensitive and in touch with their feelings.'
Adding: 'So all you can do is be yourself - just be who the hell you are.'

Dunst made her film debut in the Woody Allen-directed New York Stories in 1983, and went on to find much success in 1994's Interview With The Vampire opposite Brad Pitt.
Years later she would book over 30 films including her most notable movies Marie Antoinette and Spider-Man, her first superhero franchise as major love interest Mary Jane Watson.
'I know some actresses who are better at it,' she said of other child actors. 'Dakota Fanning reminds me a lot of myself, but she's wiser that I was at her age.'
Now she is set to make her first major TV role in the upcoming second season of FX's Fargo.
'TV is a lot harder than film. A lot harder,' Kirsten revealed.
From child acting to a storied career: 'I know some actresses who are better at it,' she said of other child actors. 'Dakota Fanning reminds me a lot of myself, but she's wiser that I was at her age'

'When I got the part, my friend Lizzy [Caplan], who is on Masters of Sex, said, "Be sure to get B12 shots to get you through the week." I was like, "Really? That sounds very dramatic, Lizzy.'"
'By the third week I was all over the B12. It was one of the best roles I've ever played - the writing is spectacular - but by the end I was tapped out.'
Fargo is slated for the fall lineup with films like Woodshock and Midnight Special in the pipeline.
The cover girl has a loving support system including her mother Inez, whom she gushed about to T&C, as well as actor boyfriend Garrett Hedlund.
'We've been together for three and a half years, so, yes, it's going really well. We're the same age. We have similar backgrounds," she shared adding, 'He feels like family to me.'
