Spotlight on soulful 'Here' singer Alessia Cara
Alessia's single for introverts, 'Here', went viral last year
Who is she? Alessia's melodic, bluesy debut single ‘Here’ went viral last year, nabbing her the number two spot on the BBC Sound of 2016 list and a place in Taylor Swift’s squad.
Big break? Like fellow Canadian wunderkind Justin Bieber, Alessia, 19, was spotted on YouTube – the introverted singer cites ‘shyness’ as the reason behind her preference for performing at home in the Toronto suburbs.
‘It was a way to get my voice out there, but I didn’t have to be in front of an audience,’ she says.
The soulful Adele and Justin Timberlake covers she began posting aged 13 slowly built a following and by 18 she had signed to Def Jam Recordings.
When ‘Here’ was released last May, music blogs pounced on the wallflower anthem – which is about feeling awkward and out of place at a house party – and it racked up 500,000 plays on music site The Fader in one week before charting in 16 countries.
Swift rise to fame In October last year, Alessia duetted ‘Here’ with Taylor Swift in Tampa on the superstar’s 1989 tour after Taylor sent her a direct message on Twitter.
‘That was insane,’ Alessia says. ‘There were 55,000 people there and they knew the words to my song.’
What’s next? Her debut album Know-It-All dropped last November and, following a headlining North American tour, Alessia will hit the road with Coldplay as they tour Europe from June.
- Alessia’s single ‘Wild Things’ will be released on Friday
