Strictly fans' fury over Corrie star trained as a dancer - Daily Mail

Strictly fans' fury over Corrie star trained as a dancer: Viewers complain of 'unfair advantage' after it emerges Natalie Gumede started learning aged four

  • Coronation Street actress started dance classes when she was four
  • She is trained in cabaret, contralto, jazz, Latin American and tap dancing
  • Viewers berated 'favourite to win' on Twitter after she topped leaderboard
|
But as actress Natalie Gumede emerged as the favourite to win this weekend, outraged viewers declared themselves unimpressed to learn that she had had a professional dance background.
Many of them took to social networking site Twitter to complain that her previous training had given her an ‘unfair advantage’.
The 29-year-old Coronation Street star received a wave of criticism from viewers with some even saying her points were ‘void’ because she was not a beginner.
Shortly after signing for the BBC 1 show it emerged Miss Gumede was listed as ‘highly skilled’ dancer on her agency CV and worked professionally until she suffered an injury aged 19.
The actress was previously credited for her abilities in cabaret, contralto, jazz dancing, Latin American and tap dancing, having started training at the tender age of four.
But despite being upfront about her dance background many viewers branded Miss Gumede ‘miles in front’ of the other remaining contestants.
On Twitter one viewer, calling themselves Pebbles, posted: ‘Why is everyone saying how good Natalie is? She used to dance professionally until she 19. Unfair advantage.’
And Andy Lloyd tweeted: ‘Natalie Gumede winds me up on Strictly, she’s a trained dancer and shouldn’t be doing it… She’s miles in front. Unfair.’
Touching on Miss Gumede’s theatre background, one fan, calling themselves Sybil Disobedience said: ‘I’m trying to be a better person. I will *not* take against Natalie because she’s a stage school grad with a clear advantage.’
On Saturday evening it was ‘love week’ on Strictly Come Dancing and the second live show of the series since the launch on September 14.
Miss Gumede and her professional dance partner Artem Chigvintsev, 31, performed an impressive rumba which resulted in the couple topping the leader board with a score of 36 out of a possible 40 points.
Wearing a sparkly blue dress, Miss Gumede enthralled judges Darcey Bussell, Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and Lenn Goodman with her sensual routine to Rihanna’s ‘Love the way you lie.’

However audiences branded the couple’s high score of all ‘nines’ from the four judges as an obvious reflection of her stage school background.
Adele Poultney posted online: ‘Can’t stand Natalie she is obviously a highly trained dancer!’
Another frustrated Strictly fan Dave Jones added: ‘Natalie is like one of those annoying girls from school who bangs on about how difficult they find things, but still get straight As.’
Miss Gumede, who played Kirsty Soames in ITV soap Coronation Street, graduated from Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in 2003.
Prior to her London training she trained from the age of four with dance teacher Susan Chippendale, who is now retired, in her home town in Lancashire.
Speaking about her training yesterday, dance teacher Susan Chippendale, 66, told how she was always ‘top of the class’ and won competitions performing in dance festivals as a child.
She said: ‘Her mum started taking her to my dance classes when she was only four, she just wanted to dance.
‘She was one of my best tap dancers – it’s all about rhythm and alertness.

‘She got very high marks in her final tap exams, and she used to do a lot of solo dances at festivals around the country when she was 11 or 12.
‘She stayed with me until she went to the Italia Conti school, obviously if you’ve danced before, your brain is used to telling your feet what to do.
‘However usually in this competition they’re not all total novices so I don’t think it’s fair to have a go at Natalie.
‘I hope she goes a long way in this year’s show – I just hope the public keep voting the right way!’
Mrs Chippendale retired from teaching dance six years ago and her dance school has closed down.

Despite the controversy Strictly Come Dancing is still proving popular with TV viewers. Saturday night’s live show drew an audience of 9.8 million.
At its peak the BBC dance competition received 10.9 million viewers beating ITV’s first live X Factor show which at peak only received an audience of 9.2 million.
Strictly Come Dancing, hosted by Sir Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly, is currently in its eleventh series and features celebrities with professional dance partners competing in Ballroom and Latin dances.
Last night Radio 2 DJ Vanessa Feltz and professional partner James Jordan became the second couple to be voted off the show.
The pair were in the dance off with fashion designer Julien Macdonald and his American partner Janette Manrara.

Vanessa Feltz becomes second star to exit Strictly Come Dancing

'We thought maybe we would be saved.... we were wrong': Vanessa Feltz becomes  second star to exit Strictly Come Dancing

|
Vanessa Feltz is the second celebrity to exit Strictly Come Dancing – but despite the blow she insisted her departure was not a ‘terrible tragedy.’
The 51-year-old TV presenter, who danced with professional James Jordan, lost out to fashion designer Julien Macdonald in a dance-off that she hoped she might win after Macdonald found himself in the bottom two for the second week running.
‘We thought maybe we would just dance for our lives and we might be saved by the judges, but we were wrong,’ Feltz said.

She and Jordan performed their tango to Lay All Your Love On Me by Abba in a bid to remain in the competition.
After both couples had danced, the judges delivered their verdicts with Craig Revel Horwood, Darcey Bussell and Bruno Tonioli all choosing to save Macdonald.
Head judge Len Goodman said: ‘Funnily enough Vanessa, I thought you danced a little better in that second dance, however I would have gone for Julien and Janette.’
Reflecting on her exit, Feltz said: ‘Yes, I'm disappointed because it was a great, great pleasure to be part of the programme.

'It was so much fun, and so enjoyable, and so great. So of course I'm sad, and I would have liked to have stayed as long as possible, but it wasn't to be obviously which is a big shame.
‘I think I was probably due to leave... If there had been one more week, or two more weeks, I think that would have been my limit.
‘I don't think it's a great personal tragedy. I was never exactly set to win the show, was I? Let's face it.’

She described her time on the show as a ‘wonderful opportunity’ and gushed about her partner and all that comes with being a contestant on the BBC show.
‘I really, really tried hard. I really loved his company. I loved the dancing. I loved the clothes. I loved the people. I made some very good friends.
‘I loved being part of something that's so all encompassing. It's the Strictly bubble - when you're in it you can barely think of anything else,’ she said.

Feltz said the last few weeks have made her fitter, and said she was juggling more tasks than she thought was possible, adding: I've proved that I can get up at ten past four in the morning and be at work for 4.30am, do two radio shows, write a column, train for four, five, even six hours, and still be alive and survive, which I never thought I could do.'
Although disappointed, the presenter seemed content enough to move on with life post-Strictly.
‘I'll have to just get back to my real life and luckily I enjoy my real life, so that's not a terrible tragedy,’ she said, adding that she hoped Sophie Ellis-Bextor or Abbey Clancy would go on to win the competition.

Golf legend Tony Jacklin is the first celebrity to be voted off Strictly Come Dancing

Golf legend Tony Jacklin is the first celebrity to be voted off Strictly Come Dancing

    |
Golf legend Tony Jacklin has become the first celebrity to exit Strictly Come Dancing after his Charleston routine was judged below par.
Jacklin and professional partner Aliona Vilani, and fashion designer Julien Macdonald and his partner Janette Manrara, were the first two couples to face a 'dance-off' on the hit BBC One show.
They were selected as the lowest scoring of the 15 celebrity couples taking part in the series - after combining judges' marks from performances last weekend and last night along with the results of viewers' votes.

Jacklin - who came joint bottom on the Strictly leaderboard last weekend and bottom last night - performed a golf-themed Charleston again to It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) by Chantz.
But Strictly judges Craig Revel Horwood, Darcey Bussell and Bruno Tonioli all chose to save Macdonald and Manrara, who danced the Tango to Applause by Lady Gaga.
Head Judge Len Goodman said: 'Tony you've been one of my golfing heroes all of my life, sadly I have to say I would have gone with Julien and Janette, but you're still one of my heroes.'

Speaking after he exited the show, 69-year-old Jacklin, described as the most successful British golf player of his generation, confessed to feeling 'petrified' on Saturday before going on stage to perform the Charleston.
'It was a very, very intimidating situation going on stage in front of 10 million people - I felt like running away half an hour before going on last night but there was security all over the place,' he joked.
'That's the feeling you get, you are just completely petrified.'

Saturday night's show saw singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor, dressed in a 1920s-style gold tasselled Flapper dress, score four nines from the judges after performing the Charleston with dance partner Brendan Cole.
But Jacklin, who is originally from Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire, came under fire for his Charleston routine, in which he used a golf club as a prop and wore a bright diamond-patterned golfing style top with plus fours and diamond patterned socks.

Tonioli remarked: 'The most exciting thing in that was the jumper,' and Revel Horwood added: 'The Charleston should be lively, energetic, frenetic. Unfortunately yours was limp, lame and lacklustre.'
But Goodman defended him, saying: 'You have only been dancing for about five weeks... I've been golfing for 50 years and I am still terrible.
'You are the same age as me, at 69 to come out and dance a very energetic dance, I commend you for that.'

Susanna Reid is urged to ditch breakfast TV for the ballroom as she impresses the judges on Strictly Come Dancing

'It's time to give up the day job!' Susanna Reid is urged to ditch breakfast TV for the ballroom as she impresses the judges on Strictly Come Dancing

But Susanna Reid has been urged to ditch breakfast TV for the ballroom after impressing the Strictly Come Dancing judges for a second consecutive week.
Kicking off the evening's proceedings on Saturday night, Susanna and her partner Kevin Clifton wowed with a practically faultless Tango to Bruno Mars' Locked Out Of Heaven.

But the journalist admitted fitting in the gruelling training schedule around her filming commitments was proving difficult.
She said: 'The moves in the Tango are quite hard for me to get my head around and it's challenging trying to fit things into my busy schedule.
'I start at 4am so Kevin has to come everywhere with me, those two hours are the perfect opportunity to get some practice. Interviewing the Prime Minister is just part of my day job, but it's not as scary as this.'

But Susanna could soon be giving up her day job if judge Darcey Bussell's comments were anything to go by.
Delivering an impressive score of 31 for the couple's tango, she said: 'I'm loving your conviction. I think you should give up your day job, you've got it! You're enjoying every minute.'
Len Goodman added: 'You put the go in Tango there. Your frame sometimes is a little bit loose and you lose a bit of connection. But so far, so fabulous.'

And Mr Nasty Craig Revel Horwood was uncharacteristically nice, saying: 'I'm loving your conviction. I think you should give up your day job, you've got it! You're enjoying every minute.'

Bruno didn't mince his words, saying: 'The most exciting thing about that was the jumper. The timing was off, there was no movement in the feet. It wasn't the Charleston.'

Meanwhile, Len was pleased with his effort for his age: 'I've been golfing for 50 years and I'm still terrible! At 69, to come out and dance a very energetic dance, I commend you for that. It wasn't the most sparkling performance but well done for getting out there and having a go.'

Craig was typically mean, stating: 'I thought you were dancing by numbers, quite frankly. It lacked style, horrible hands. The lift was lumberjack-ish, but I like you and I like your personality.'

After receiving a rather mediocre score of 17, actor Patrick Robinson took to the dancefloor with an energetic tango to Michael Jackson's Beat It, for which he received a not too shabby 27.
After impressing the judges all round, Len delivered his verdict: 'You danced with a lot of energy and this week you've done a great Tango. You'll be hanging around for weeks.'

Delivering their somewhat damning verdict, Craig said: 'I thought you were wriggling around like a slug in salt. It was out of control, the lift was very messy. It was very awkward at times.'
Darcey added: 'There is lots of sugar but not a lot of spice. I want to see you flirting with Pasha, he's easy to flirt with. There were a few messy beginnings and ends.'

Bruno explained: 'It was like watching a gorgeous rag doll. The attitude is right but you need to work on control. You look like you're about to drop to the floor any minute. Work on your control because you've got the beauty.'

Explaining her disappointment at last week's scores, she said: 'Maybe I should have taken my own shirt off, that would have given them something to worry about. I don't know what I could do apart from hand over my heart on a plate.'
But it was clear she had put her all into the routine this week.
Wiping away the tears, she said: 'I didn't really realise that dance could take you over so dramatically. Like everyone else, I've had quite a hard time with a broken heart in the past. I've never experienced anything like this before, I know what people talk about when they say they really love it.'

Len said: 'It was heartfelt, poignant, there was a little story going on. You just need to work a little bit more on the details for it to be a complete package.'

Recapping on her impressive result last week, she said: 'It still feels like a weird dream, I can't even remember doing it. I can't believe I even got 8s but I'm so happy. To hear Len say it was the dance of the night was just so shocking to me because I was so nervous.'
But for the cha cha, Abbey explained she was having to work on her 'energy, passion and connection' with her hunky partner.

But Abbey admitted she was finding her cha cha more challenging, saying: 'I'm finding the cha cha way more difficult than the waltz. We have to focus and hopefully it will be OK on the night.'
