A statement from SBS said at the time: 'The [new] deal is a result of SBS's ambition to increase Australia's presence at Eurovision following the success of Jessica Mauboy's performance last year in Denmark.'
According to The Daily Telegraph, it took three years of lobbying to increase Australia's involvement in the singing contest.

“The first trip to seriously start lobbying the EBU was to Brussels about three years ago,” SBS managing director Sam Ebeid told the publication.
This year Australia has been invited to compete for the first time.
Not only will voters be able to back Australia this year, but the country will be fast-tracked to the final, which will be hosted in Vienna in May to celebrate the contest's 60th anniversary.
