Zoe Kravitz reveals to Complex magazine that she struggled with multiple eating disorders for years

'I had a hard time loving myself!' Zoe Kravitz reveals she struggled with multiple eating disorders for years

Growing up her father was one of the world's biggest rock stars, her mother America's sitcom sweetheart and occasionally Ashton Kutcher would make omelettes in her kitchen.
But while that may seem an enviable life to most, Zoe Kravitz has revealed a childhood spent surrounded in fame can also have its dark side.
The 26-year-old actress has told Complex magazine of her struggles with eating disorders - both bulimia and anorexia - that plagued her until just two years ago.

The Mad Max star told the magazine: 'I had a really hard time when I was 16, 17, 18. I started with the eating disorder in high school… Just [a hard time] loving myself.
'I think it was part of being a woman, and being surrounded by [fame].'
She then, according to the magazine, backtracked: 'I don't think it was about the fame, but I think it was definitely about being around that world, seeing that world. I felt pressured.'

The singer and actress said her insecurities were a combination of ideas about beauty and her upbringing as the daughter of rocker Lenny Kravitz and sitcom star Lisa Bonet.
Zoe said in the cover story, she was surrounded by 'a lot of beautiful people,' one of those being her mother.
'My mother's a beautiful woman, and I think, in some way, I felt intimidated by that sometimes.'

But her mother also struggles with insecurity, the actress said: 'Everyone sees themselves in some weird, obscure way.
'People meet her and don't know what to do with themselves, but she doesn't know how f**king cool she is. Or what she means to the rest of the world.'

Also, able to laugh despite the seriousness of her illness, the star added: 'My dad dated a lot of supermodels.'
Her illness got to an alarming level after high school when the actress dropped down to just 90 pounds in the summer of 2013 to play anorexic twenty-something in film The Road Within, as she was not 'disciplined enough to play the part without letting her demons get the best of her'.
'My parents got really scared for me to go back down that road.
'It was f**ked up, man. You could see my rib cage. I was just trying to lose more weight for the film but I couldn't see: You're there. Stop. It was scary.'
After the film she confesses to being very sick, so much so, that she did not get her period regularly, her immune system shut down and her thyroid was thrown off.
On New Year's Eve that year she finally decided enough was enough.
'I just felt it was different. I don't know if a f**king spirit came over me and said: ''You have to stop.''
'I feel like something has left my body, like some part of me is gone now, something that was making me so insecure. And it feels amazing.'
Having conquered her demons and insecurity, Zoe clearly feels confident in her own skin which was evident in the rather sexy bondage themed shoot for the magazine - that saw her wear a number of dominatrix-style PVC ensembles.
There was also a lot of good things about growing up famous, namely it more than helped the singer and actress get her foot in the door.
At her worst: Her illness got to an alarming level when the actress dropped down to just 90 pounds in the summer of 2013 to play anorexic twenty-something in film The Road Within, which also starred Robert Patrick and Dev Patel

Zoe readily admits her last name afforded her the career she has today.
'It was very easy for me to get an agent when I wanted to act, for obvious reasons.
'And I don't know, maybe it's not because they thought I was talented - I wasn't the most talented girl in the world when I was 15. It was because my parents were famous, and they were like, ''Cool, maybe we can make money off of that.''

'I know so many talented people that do the most amazing things but they need to work at a restaurant. I don't.
'I can make all the art I want and get paid to do it - it's f**king crazy. I'm so thankful for it.'
The Insurgent actress said she does struggle with whether she deserves her life at times but tries not to dwell on it.
'Sometimes it’s difficult for me to enjoy the fame.

'I guess you just have to trust that you did something awesome in a past life, like saved a kid from a burning home.'
And while she is on her way to mega stardom and her parents have already achieved this, at heart Zoe says her family are just big dorks.
She said: 'I don’t think anyone knows how funny we are.
'It’s like this whole thing where people think we’re so cool and hippie and wear velvet but we’re the f**king nerdiest people.'

While her mother ran off and married her dad at just 20 - the divorced six years later - marriage is not yet on the horizon.
The 26-year-old - who previously dated Penn Badgley and Chris Pine - says she does not date that much.
'No one ever asks me out. When I tend to meet a guy who’s cool and is into me they’re like, ''You’re so cool that I can’t handle it.''

Though it seems one man have caught her eye - rapper Drake or Aubrey as she calls him - despite the fact she says they are more like family.
'We're very good friends. I’m very flirtatious... [But] he’s family to me. He’s a really, really awesome dude.
'We inspire each other. We play each other music.'
