Paloma Faith: ‘Dressing up is like therapy’

Paloma Faith: ‘Dressing up is like therapy’ ... the outrageous singer reveals that deep down she is just a shy, insecure girl

  • Cites her style as nostalgia and vintage which men don't appreciate
  • Says burlesque roots have helped her become a successful performer

As a former magician’s assistant and singer in a burlesque show, Paloma Faith is well-known for her eccentric and colourful dress sense.
With bright crimson lips to match her red curls, she exudes old-school Hollywood glamour, but beneath the lace and rouge, the 27-year-old singer isn't as confident as she may appear on stage.
'Deep down I'm still the shy, insecure girl I always was, but I've developed ways of dealing with it,' she told the Telegraph Magazine.

The East London singer and actress, who is known for her outlandish vintage style, added: 'Dressing up is like therapy; I feel better in myself when I've made an effort.'
Citing her style as nostalgic and vintage, she admits that men aren't always drawn to her look but maintains that her days as a burlesque performer in Soho have stood her in good stead, enabling her to improve as a live performer while helping her come to terms with her shape.

Never one to stick to trends, Paloma shuns generic outfit choices for looks that reflect her personality.
She puts this down to her mother's influence who, she says, dressed for herself rather than the male gaze.
Speaking about men's distaste of her lingerie choices she said: 'They always go, "Whoa, those are massive pants.," and I say, "Like it or lump it, I'm not a thong kind of girl."'

Paloma has come a long way from her tough school days at a local comprehensive school in Stoke Newington where she suffered bullying and then ran away to the circus.
She has since acted in St Trinian's, signed a five-album deal with Sony Music, had a platinum album and is about to embark on a British tour.
