Resident baddie: Benedict Cumberbatch as terrorist John Harrison in the new Star Trek: Into Darkness trailer released on Friday
Rivals: Chris Pine's Captain James T Kirk has a moment of self-doubt in the trailer while Cumberbatch revealed last week he is not playing the character Khan as it was initially rumoured
Expanding on the short teaser trailer, Chris Pine's Captain James T. Kirk is hit by self-doubt, saying: 'You think you can’t make mistakes but there comes a moment when you realise you’re wrong about that and you’re going to get yourself and everyone under your command killed.'
Meanwhile British star Benedict Cumberbatch as terrorist John Harrison - not Khan as he was initially rumoured to be playing - provides the spookiest contribution to the trailer.
'You think you’re safe. You are not,' he tells the Enterprise commander.
Pine's character is also seen hurtling into space, with other sequences interspersed including a chase through the Red Forest.
Dramatic: Pine races through the Red Forest in a dramatic sequence from the hotly anticipated movie
Leap of faith: He then is seen jumping off a huge cliff into the raging waters below
The trailer debuted at movie theatres on Friday, and largely focuses around Cumberbatch's new character, showing what looks like a much darker sequel to the 2009 film with apocalyptic battle scenes and all-out action.
Cumberbatch, who has dyed his strawberry blonde hair dark for the role, comes across as the quintessential villain as he sets about destroying the lives of the Enterprise crew.
It was initially believed he was playing Kirk's evil nemesis Khan in the J.J. Abrams’s movie.
But Cumberbatch last week clarified that he was not in role as the genetically engineered tyrant, the chief enemy in the 1982 flick Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan.
Glimpse: Zoe Saldana is bacl as Nyota Uhura while Zachary Quinto reprises his role as Spock
Action-packed: The trailer shows a much scarier and dramatic Star Trek than ever before
Talking about his terrorist character, Harrison, the British actor told Access Hollywood: '[He's] not your two-dimensional cookie cutter villain.
'He has a purpose and it’s hard not to see his point of view at certain points,' he added, saying he hopes viewers will be able to empathise with the character.
'He has extraordinary physical powers, but also mental powers,' he went on. 'He can sow an idea, which is as powerful as gunshots or close-hand combat, which he’s masterful in.
'He tears into the fabric of both the world and the Enterprise family, and he leaves behind him a trail of devastation.'
Under threat: The Enterprise must protect the organisation from evil forces
Calm before the storm: The Enterprise crew have been drafted in hunt down Cumberbatch's character and stop him before he destroys the city
The action-packed trailer, shows the cat and mouse game that's played out between Pine and Cumberbatch throughout the film, resulting in what looks like large-scale destruction.
The teaser opened with the line: 'So you think your world is safe? It's all just an illusion.'
The eagerly anticipated sequel, which is released on May 17 next year, also stars Alice Eve, Zoe Saldana and Simon Pegg who reprise their original roles.
Darker film: Pine and Saldana reprieve their roles in the much darker sequel to the 2009 film
Evil role: Cumberbatch, who is best known for playing Sherlock, stars as the villain and gets to explore his evil side
Drama begins: Captain Kirk and the team must head into a war zone
Apocalyptic: The terrifying scenes from the trailer suggest a much more dramatic film
Action hero: Chris Pine stars as Captain Kirk, the iconic hero and captain of the Enterprise
The film and trailer are already being compared favourably to Batman film The Dark Knight Rises, as even the film posters are arguably similar.
The cast are already promoting the film, building momentum for it's release.
'It's about a 250 million US dollars movie and a lot is riding on it to be a success,' admitted Chris Pine.
'I didn't know much about the series when I first got the role and I learned a lot about it doing it. It's way easier. I think the way that I deal with it is that I never even think about it,' he said.
Star Trek: Into Darkness is released on May 17
